After I was told they only charge 3 cents a minute I thought I would give it a try. I called my sister in another state and left a message on her answering machine- less than one minute. I was charged:

Carrier cost recovery fee $1.97
Fed Univ. srv fund reimbursement $ .59
The actual call $.42
Not even the bill mentions the $.39 connection fee
I rarely use long distance and never again Vartec.
