Worst service ever
Here's my story about this company now known as Compu-Terra.com. I order 1 stick of NEC PC100 256 MB SDRAM. The salesman pleasantly called me the next day, but unfortunately I happened to be out at class as I'm on the west coast and their business hours conflict with my class time schedule. He left a message asking me to call them back. I e-mailed them back due to their being closed and I get a reply asking the make of my motherboard for compatibility issues. I reply and promptly the next day I am told that the RAM I have ordered is 100% compatible with my motherboard (The FIC SD11 in case anyone cares). At this point I was thoroughly pleased with their prompt service. I received the RAM about 1 week after ordering and placed it in my system only to find that it was causing sporadic memory errors and was restarting the machine every other time it was started up (on a system previously running rock solid on win2k and PC100 Hyundai SDRAM) I should also mention that not only was the RAM faulty, it was the wrong brand, it was Specktek and not NEC. I called back for my RMA number and when I complained about the fact that it was the incorrect RAM, I was told that supposedly I had contacted their sales rep and had authorized the switch in RAM. I was amazed at the lack of professionalism. After sending back the RAM, I saw the replacement arrive about 2 weeks later; this time it was PC133 (not PC100 as advertised on their site) 256 MB NEC SDRAM. Once again placing it in my machine resulted in memory errors within win2k. I also tested it in several other machines only to find the exact same problem. As I said before, I do live on the West Coast (UCLA) and my class schedule conflicts with Compu-Terra's business hours. I e-mailed them various e-mails about my problems, and left several messages on their machines, and didn't get any replies from them for 3 weeks. I was finally sick and tired of it all and decided that skipping a day of class was worth sorting my problem out. I called tech support, and talked to Bill, who thoroughly destroyed all faith I had in this company. He proceeded to tell me that the order I had originally made was for Spektek Memory and not NEC and that's what they sent me. To this, I replied that I had a copy of the reciept showing that I ordered NEC and not SPEKTEK and asked whether he would like a faxed copy. He said that his systems showed that I had made an order of spektek so I promptly told him that this was indeed a problem with their company’s shopping cart system and not my problem, to which he specifically replied "I don't care" and then he said that he would only replace my merchandise and not reimburse me for my money. At this point I was sick and tired of paying more than I bargained for due to the cross shipping charges. He proceeded to argue that they had checked both memories before having sent them and that I probably "staticed" them. This was absolutely ludicrous as I've worked at a computer firm for 5 years and am an electrical engineer and obviously am rather experienced in such situations and for it to happen both times was next to impossible. He then said that memory faults etc aren't only caused by memory, and my reply was that this is indeed true however when replacing memory in a rock solid system, crashing the system is solely a problem with the memory and nothing else (any idiot can tell you that). He proceeded to tell me that sometimes you would have to reinstall video card drivers to fix this. Any half brained computer technician will tell you that what he was doing was simply covering his ass and that changing brands of memory will only cause problems if the memory is faulty; it doesn't directly affect any other part of the rest of the system. I told him this and his idiotic reply was "IT HAS DIFFERENT REGISTERS". Once again I'm sure I'm not the only one who's laughing at that inane comment. I told him that I was an Engineer and that I knew what he was saying made absolutely no sense whatsoever and to which he replied, and I quote... "MAN GET OUT OF TOWN, GO BURN SOMETHING!" with anger. At this point I was done, I hung up, called the sales desk and asked for the manager. Anita who answered the phone asked if she could help me. I gave her my complaint to which she promptly gave me the company's FedEx number so I would no longer be charged for the multiple cross shipments and she was very courteous about passing on the complaint about Bill. I have since then received an RMA number and hope to have some working RAM, some time this year. I will keep you posted about what happens. It has been about 5 weeks since I ordered that RAM folks and at this point I wouldn’t recommend Compu-Terra to anyone, let’s hope they change their ways because at this rate they’ll be out of business soon.
