Avoid A1 National Van Hire at all costs
I found this company online, as I was looking for a minibus for our family holiday. We sent our details through back in February it's now June. I received an email in February stating *** In order to confirm your booking, please fax a copy of your driving licence and one other form of ID (such as passport, utility bill, bank statement etc...) to 0116 268 0978 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 0116 268 0978 end_of_the_skype_highlighting or email a scan of it to [email protected] *** We contacted A1 National van hire on several occasions as we were concerned that we haven't had any further correspondence and was concerned as we haven't actually got a confirmed booking, we also needed vehicle registration number for our ferry crossing. Every time you contacted these jokers, they would put you on hold with no explanation and keep you waiting. They advised us that they haven't got this 17 seat minibus and it would be out-sauced to another company and we didn't need a reg. As my holiday is a month away and i'm responsible for 13 other people I called them and told them not to continue with the booking!!... The BOY I spoke to was very abrupt and displayed no customer service skills. His attitude was appalling. As he had our credit card details he said he would take the payment from my card without authorization. This only added to my concerns. I contacted trading standards and canceled my cards. I called them back and spoke to Paul Harding if that was his real name. I asked to speak to a manager, he said I am the manager on this occasion FISHY!! I asked him who was the manager for this company and the owner which he wouldn't give me!!!... I advised him if he wants to take me to court I would gladly see him there to fight my corner. He said I would strongly advise you not too do that as we would win and you would have to pay all the court costs... I am now using a reputable company and can look forward to my holiday... NEVER USE A1 NATIONAL VAN HIRE!!!

Stay away from them
I am self employed, i need the use of a van, my van starter motor packed up at 8.30 pm leaving me stuck for the next day, I had a look online and found A1 national van hire, It looked promising when i put in the information on the vehicle I needed and the time I needed it . I never thought of looking at reviews beforehand, all I thought about was fullfilling my obligations the next day, I jumped right in and booked the van . The first email I received quoted the price for the hire (minus VAT) which i never knew at the time. Next morning I arrived at the destination I had submitted for the vehicle to be delivered, no sign of it, I phoned and was told it would be there in 1/2 an hour to an hour guaranteed, ok, that time elapsed, I phoned again, they gave me the direct number for the company in the city where I was awaiting delivery of the vehicle, I called them and eventually 2 and a 1/2 hours late the vehicle arrived, it wasnt the vehicle i requested, nowhere near infact but i had no time and couldnt be bothered with the hassle anymore so just got on with it . what i have learned is that basically this company charge you almost or very close to the charge of the hire company that actually send you the vehicle, basically your paying double the hire rate for using this company to sort you out a vehicle . If I never got into a panic and waited until morning to hire a van directly from a hire company, It would have cost me half of what i've ended up paying using A1 national van hire . live and learn, so they say . I have slipped up this time, wont happen again.

Disgusting company with next to no customer service skills
Disgusting company with next to no customer service skills - how diificult is it to answer a phone or respond to an email. Having progressed a booking (diificult in itself) I discover that the fee due to Europcar is significantly higher than the quote I booked with and the highly publicised unlimited mileage guarantee is a sham as I have a mileage restriction (that will cost me surcharges if I exceed - which is likely).
A1 are refusing to acknowldge matters, let alone issue a refund despite their error.
Currently attempting to regain monies via Trading Standards.

Don't bother using this company
Don't bother using this company. I'm still waiting for a refund 2 months after it was promised. Difficult to get hold of, and apparently in a state of chaos.

They do not have any sort of communication skills, do not return calls or emails
This company really ripped me off! I could write an essay on the amount of things that went wrong, but put simply they provide an awful service (wrong van, wrong times etc) and have taken over £150 out of my account than was agreed in the contract. They do not have any sort of communication skills, do not return calls or emails. I am reporting this company to trading standards, and having to get my lawyer to write them a letter as their service is a disgrace and should not get away with what they are doing!

This company did not supply the van we hired
This company did not supply the van we hired and paid for or refund the money they helped themselves to from my bank account!
Contacting them by telephone was impossible... on ANY of the numbers on their website! Managed to get a missed call from them (after we emailed them addressing the company director by name!) on a withheld number, but the dim lad who left the message managed to avoid leaving a number to call him back on!
I have the name of the company owner and his address. It's on companies house website! Perhaps he'd like to deal with the complaints that his team ignore!

They are obviously taking advantage of the debit card system
I booked a 9 seater minivan for a day trip for my daughters birthday and her friends. I was quoted £115.99 for 1 days hire. AFTER I had sent copies of my license and proof of address, they rang me to say that the vehicle was not available, the booking was canceled and there would be no charge to my debit card. I obviously then made other arrangements. However, on the day of the trip, a 17 seater minibus was delivered to my home!!! They had booked the vehicle for 2 days hire at a cost of £179.42 with a total of £429.42 to be debited to my account. All without my knowledge or consent!!! Ive contacted them but without response. If/when the money is taken from my account I will be taking legal advice. They are obviously taking advantage of the debit card system. Incidentally, I also tried to get help from the vehicle providers, Europcar.com, but they don't want to know.

Price for a van was greater than quoted plus it did not arrive on day
Ordered a van, firstly price was greater than quoted. Van did not arrive on day. Emailed 3 times, no response. Called 5 times, always promised a refund, a month later still no money. Staff are getting very rude. They promise to call back, but each time they do not. Every time I ask for a manager, they say one is not available.
Will be taking to court. This is a fraudulent company, do not use.

They debited my account without any authority and have provided a follow up service of nothing but excuses and poor communications
These guys are a complete shambles! They debited my account without any authority and have provided a follow up service of nothing but excuses and poor communications. none of my calls have been returned and every time I call they claim to be trying to arrange a refund, but it's more than clear that I'm being lied to! A company of Asian men, who all have the surname of Smith?????I don't think so. It's a couple of guys who are running a scam (in my view)... I have reported their scam to trading Standards and have no doubt that they will be held to account for their illegal activity. Very poor, is an understatement...Feel free to e-mail me if you want more information as I do not want you to get ripped off.

I am certain they are breaking the VAT laws
This company does not include VAT in their quotation until after you have confirmed the booking and so commited yourself. Nor do they quote a VAT number on their web site or email confirmation. I am certain they are breaking the VAT laws and also mis-selling their services this way. Another point to watch out for. They ask you to scan and send copies of your driving licence and utility bill in a follow up email, putting you at real risk of identity theft. Once you have sent these details, they have your both card details and copies of your key ID documents. This is seriously worrying me. I will be watching my bank account very carefully for some time.
