How double debit caused $175.00 overdraft fee
How AARP caused my checking Account to be overdrawn and their refusal to acknowledge their mistake.
As a Veteran that depends on my Disability and my VA Pension, AARP will not respond only stonewall. Plus they will not refund any money that is owed immediately.
But as I was told it will take to billing cycles = to 60 days to refund $32.00. Nor refund the overdraft fees ($175.00) that was created by their error. Do business with AARP at your own risk.
Per my conversations with: Customer Service Rep (Alisa), Spvr. (Patty Kidd) and Jennifer Dishman on 06-08-2010. Please see the attached Bank Statement regarding the Unauthorized Debit of $16.00 from my Checking Account for the AARP membership. Your company (AARP) took an additional ($16.00) for the membership and this caused my account to be severely overdrawn in the amount (211.52). I am a Disabled Veteran living on a fixed monthly income, my Wife is unemployed and this is our only source of income. This mistake was AARP and not mines, but none of the above referenced employees from AARP was willing to admit only that they could see the additional amount of ($16.00) totally $32.00 that was taken. Instead they tried to say it was my mistake and I would receive my requested refund in 2 billing cycles per (Patty Kidd). I was told to send this fax to you so I and this matter can be resolve. Because this is AARP MISTAKE and not mine. Im requesting that upon the receipt of this FAX that, (1) AARP Cancel the membership. (2) Refund my entire ($32.00). (3) Refund the ($175.00) Overdraft Charges. (4) Provide me with an E-Mail or Fax stating that I did not authorize AARP to debit the extra $16.00 which caused my account to be overdrawn. Thank You for your immediate attention to this Unauthorized Debit.
Per Danielle Davis in the CEO office she advised all she could do was verify the fax number and it will be 3 days to expect a reply to my fax.
THIS IS HOW AARP TREATS PEOPLE. AARP IS ONLY INTERESTED IN MONEY AND DO NOT CARE ABOUT PEOPLE WHEN AARP MAKES A MISTAKE.

AARP does NOT represent my interests politically
After AARP's support of the Obama Care Health Plan I contacted AARP in writing and via telephone to cancel my membership since they obviously do not represent my best interests since anyone can clearly see that ObamaCare is not best for me or the country. Their support of this made their stance on the issue perfectly clear.
AARP never aske me or any other dues paying member what our position was on this issue. They took it upon themselves to decide for the memebership how we should think on this issue.

AARP did NOT cancel my membership and continues to send me Membership Renewal Information. This was my first year of membership and I will never renew. Since joining AARP I have gotten a barrage of mail selling every type of insurance you could possibly imagine. They send these marketing materials regularly under the guise of AARP. I have come to believe that AARP is nothing more than a mechanism to gather contact information to sell insurance. I do NOT want their insurance And, I do not want to be associated with the AARP organization or their political views.

Reservationist errors
I made an international reservation with an operator through AARP travel powered by Expedia. The reservationist misspelled my name but correctly spelled my wifes. I noticed this after receiving my confirmation. I contacted AARP travel powered by Expedia and after an hour on the phone they were able to correct the error. They also charged me $20.00 for this change.I feel that since AARP Travel powered by Expedia made the error that they should pay for the change.
I corresponded with Expedia. They were no help in resolving this problem.
Also very hard to understand repersentives.
Recommendation: when making airline reservation do not use Expedia or AARP Travel

Travel Bag
I recently joined AARP partly because they offered a free travel bag, the promotional flier showed a photo of the bag, it looked very nice. I expected a substantial bag with a shoulder strap, a bag which could carry a significant amount of belongings in when you "travel." When it came, it did look like what was pictured on the flier, but it was tiny, about the size of a small camera bag. Not really useful in a practical way, and not what one normally thinks of as a travel bag. The photo of the bag on the flier didn't show a person or anything next to it so you'd know that it was tiny. That was deliberate, in my opinion. I doubt anyone would want this next to useless bag. In my opinion, this is about as close to a scam as you can get without it legally being considered a scam.

Insurance
I called AARP/Hartford insurance, on 4-25-09, to change my current Hartford auto insurance and umbrella from my private agent to AARP. The savings would have been $2000 a year. The AARP agent took my information and said my wife and I had an excellent driving record. They asked me several questions to qualify for the umbrella policy and all was in order. The AARP agent then put me on hold saying that he had to get approval from the underwriter. He came back and apologized and said that he had one more question.
Since I am a physician, he asked if I had ever published or will ever publish any scientific article. My response was yes. He then put me on hold and came back and said the underwriter was denying me my umbrella policy because I have or may publish an article in a medical journal.
I explained to the agent that I am a hospital employee and any article written would have to be approved by the research committee at the hospital and that the hospital also carries a liability policy for me. I even offered to fax the policy. I even suggested they exclude or put on a rider excluding any articles written. The agent went back to the underwriter and claimed to have gone to his boss as well. The response was still NO. I asked how they can possibly exclude everyone in the scientific community who will write or will ever write an article. He could not answer. This seems like a ridiculous and discriminatory reason to deny a policy. It seems like that they were looking for any minor excuse to deny the policy.
What I found most interesting is that I already have an umbrella policy with Hartford. I was looking to change to Hartford under AARP to save money on my auto insurance. The umbrella goes with my auto insurance so I could not change. I did ask the agent why Hartford/AARP denied me while Hartford with my private agent had no problem giving me the umbrella. He could not answer me.
Also what relevance does my professional work or professional life have to do with my personal umbrella since I have separate liability insurance through my place of employment? He could or would not answer the question. In addition he would not let me speak with the underwriter.

membership dues
Today I received a third bill for my AARP membership dues with a letter telling me that I probably forgot to pay them on time. I received the first notice in January. The problem lies in the fact that my dues aren't due until 6/30/09. When I called AARP today they told me that they send out the bill SIX MONTHS BEFORE IT''S DUE. I feel that this policy is taking advantage of the elderly by an organization that is suppose to be their advocate. Many members would have gone ahead and paid it when they got the first notice. I think that AARP shouldn't send out bills for dues until a month before previous memberships' expire, like any other organization would. Shame on them!
