Scam
So I signed up for three magazines in July of 2008. The money was drawn out of my account monthly. Well I got married in August of the same year. So my debit card that had previously been used was no longer usuable because I had gotten a new debit card since I had added my husband ot the account. Therefore, the automatic draft for the magazines was no longer coming out of the account. I got a bill a few days later saying I owed them $700. I tried calling the number back and all it did was ring unitl and automated message answered saying, "Thank you, Goodbye." Never did I ever get a real person. Since that point this so called "company" has been calling me ever since and will not let me cancel. Do not use this company.

magazines
I signed up for 4 magazines back in 2005. $49.50 a month for a year and I would receive the magazines for 3 years. I gave them my credit card info and I'm still paying to this day. I received calls every now and then asking me are you getting your magazines and are they in good condition. I had no idea they were still billing me for them. When I finally asked them am I still paying for magazines they stated yes because I subscribed for another year of payments. So as it turns out everytime they called and I answered yes to there question they took it as me signing up for another year of payments. I have thousands of magazines that I didn't ever ask for or want. I had to finally cancel my credit card. And believe it or not they are still calling asking my for another credit card. They have taken more than 1, 782 dollars from me. I have contacted the BBB and they are doing an investigation.

Blatant harassment
I'm glad I did a search on this name I got off the caller ID. I had mistakenly responded to a "survey" several days ago and have been sorry since, because of the volume of phone calls I have received.
Active Periodicals apparently is one of the recipients of my telephone number. Now, they have called my number 3 straight days; there is never a person to talk to; it just plays music and hangs up. Of course there is no message.
There is a different return phone number each day.
This is pure, blatant harrassment; interestingly enough I have a "do not solicit" on my number!

Magazine Scam
I received a call from Active Periodicals today wanting me to buy magazines and in return, I would recieve a $1000.00 online shopping spree. Everytime I would ask a question regarding "opting out" if it turned out to be something other than what the representative explained over the phone, she would reply that she was new and would have to ask her supervisor about it. I also told her that I would not give her any personal information over the phone and asked to be billed and she once again told me that she would have to check with her supervisor first. I told her that would be a great idea and she asked me to hold on. When she returned, she stated that she would have to "get back with me on this" and hung up. I'm so glad I listened to my gut instinct!! What a SCAM!!! I was tempted, like many others but it's so true what they say; If it sounds too good to be true, IT IS!

Scammed me for $300 and are threatening me with legal action now
Active Periodicals is a horrible company that makes money off of people by intimidation and corporate technicalities.
I am a recent college graduate and have been suckered into their subscription service because of the $1000 shopping spree they promised me.
First of all, for those who are familiar with Active Periodicals, the shopping spree is fake.
Now to the real headache:
1. They charged me $58 and change every month for up to 4 months before the first magazines showed up. Now when they arrived, out of the 10 magazines I got, only 2 of them are what I requested. So I complained. The number they provided led to an answering machine which they called me back A MONTH later!
only to apologize for the misunderstanding but not for the wrong magazines. So without offering a refund, they simply apologized and promised that next month would be different. They lied.
Every month for a total of 6 months, I have received garbage magazines that have nothing to do with me and would never spark an interest in me to even open the cover. So every month I dispute the charges on my credit card company but ultimately I had to cancel that AND my bank card because after disputing the charge on my credit card, they would automatically deduct out of my checking.
So after not being able to recieve money from me, the phone calls started coming... and were they nasty. A lady calls and starts to raise her voice at me and said that if I don't pay the full amount ($600 something) then legal action would be taken.
They do that every month and I doubt they would do anything to me because I did nothing wrong.
They say that I signed a contract that deems it illegal for me to not pay. And I said that it is illegal for them to take my money and not give me the products I purchased. The lady actually cursed at me and said that I was wasting her time. She said that she wasn't calling to remedy the situation but to tell me that if I don't pay, they will ruin my credit.
Now if a company was legit, first they would give you the product you asked for, and second, they would try to make sure the customer is satisfied and try to remedy any complications, as opposed to threaten their customer and initmidate them with legal actions.
So after all these long words, I wish I have never picked up that phone call from them. Please anyone, if you want magazines, just order from the suppliers themselves. All major magazines offer a very cheap annual subscription. Yes the offer from Active is cheaper and sounds very tempting but its not worth it because they do not deliver on their end and you would be stuck with either $600 less in your account, or headaches and harrassment phone calls from them for the next year a half.

Rip off
I got a call from them in mid November of 09. When they got to the part about the $1000 shopping spree, I thought "awesome, I can use it for Christmas". They told me it was good for household stuff, electronics, computers, video etc. I asked them THREE times if it could be used anywhere online and was told yes all three times. So I agreed. They had me repeat what I had agreed to so they could record it. I used my fiances credit card. Not once did they ask me if it was my credit card. They never even asked for the name on the card. That turned out to be my way out.
Normally, when I get a call like that, IF it sounds like something I'd be interested in, I ask them to call back in a few days. Then I do some web research to see what others had to say. Well, they caught me straight out of bed at 8:30 am and I got suckered.
Once I woke up I decided to check the web and was disgusted by what I read about this company and their "shopping spree"...which, by the way, is NOT usable anywhere on the web, only on their site for their crappy merchandise.
Now, if I get suckered into something, I usually take my lumps, but they flat out lied about the shopping deal. I hate being lied to. So, I had my fiance call the company and tell them that I had no authority to use his card and to cancel the account. So help me, their reply was "I'm sorry sir, we can't talk to you about this because your name isn't on the account". They said they had no way of knowing who he was and would not cancel anything. If there is one thing I am very good at, it's using the English language to my advantage. I sat down and wrote a very firm, but polite letter and pulled out all my $64, 000 words. I wrote it and had my fiance sign it. I reminded them that lying to get a sale is fraud. I told them charging a credit card without checking who was using it was illegal. Then I told them that I wanted a refund of the payment or I would contact my state Attorney Generals Office, THEIR states Attorney General, the BBB in both states AND the phone company.
I eventually got a response, AFTER a second charge to the credit card. They were VERY upset about "my fiances letter". Then they said something that actually made me laugh. They said "We have to pay your fiance back, he's VERY upset! You need to send us $--.-- so we can pay him back!" Keep in mind, they were aware that my fiance and I live in the same house...I said "wait, you took money out of his account illegally and you want ME to send you money so you can pay it back???" they answered YES!
Oh, one other thing, these people are RUDE. This woman, in an extremely snotty tone, said "we have you RECORDED agreeing to this" to which I replied, in a very snotty tone "true, but I bet you don't have a recording of you LYING to me about the shopping spree now do you?" She responded with a "no, we do not" and my reply was, "well, how VERY convenient for you. Maybe I'll post a blog telling people to make sure they record YOU when you call them." She got a bit more polite after that.
End of the story... we told them to keep the *** money but to cancel the account and if we saw another charge to the credit card, we'd be speaking to a lawyer. Expensive lesson, but one well learned.
We haven't heard a thing from them since, but the magazines kept coming. I had to call the publishers directly to cancel...and made sure to tell them all the story. Maybe they'll stop using this rip off company.

No Magazines @ $917.00
We were contacted by Active Periodicals with an offer for 6 one year subscriptions for three payments of $49.00 back in October of 2008. Sounded great! We started getting magazines that we would never have chosen and a bill for $917.oo! We were getting BET, Latino Week, Gun and Garden Club, and other ethnic magazines. The wife and I are White Professional Americans. Why would we want to subscribe to these? Attempts to contact the company have been a wast of time. The Customer support number goes into voice mail and we never get a call back. The Sale folks are always calling to collect more money because we canceled the Credit Card used for the transaction, and when I tell them that there is a problem with the Magazines and the bill, they HANG UP!
Its been a year and still have not resolved the issue! Just today I was contacted for a payment, and when I tried to explain the problem, CLICK, they hang up! This action prompted me to find a voice to complain that landed me on this site!
Buyer Beware of Active Periodicals!!!

Harassment
My mother has received two threatening calls from the company, the caller doesn't identify themselves. The caller, female, told my mother that she hates her and that she is 'dead'. I do not appreciate this harassment! She has had two such calls from this company from the same caller. She is older and is very worried and afraid because of these calls. The number if you call it back is a recording. I need a manager or someone to talk to. This behavior is very unprofessional and uncalled for! I am very upset! How did telemarketing come to this?
