We have been a client of Adept Tax Services for the past three years who has recently resigned as our tax preparer due to "not being able to provide adequate service" to us as their client.

The first year (2008), after "completing" our returns, we were told that we were to receive $4k back from the IRS only to learn that we actually "owed" $10k after the fact. Although that is a HUGE swing, I fully understand that people make mistakes from time-time. However, the following year (2009) Adept received all the necessary forms from us in time to complete our taxes long before the April 15th due date. After several weeks had passed we attempted to contact them to see when our taxes will be completed so we knew what to prepare for by mid April, however, none of our calls were returned until the week of the 15th informing us that they had to file an extension. This extension lasted several months until they were finally able to "complete" our taxes. We again owed the IRS, which surprised me since we both claim "0". Nonetheless, we went back to Adept this year. This time we were pleasantly pleased to learn that they had completed our paperwork within a week of receiving all of our paperwork and that we were getting a return this year, which we were happy to hear. A couple of days later we received a notice in the mail, from the IRS, stating that their records show that our returns don't match what they have on file and that we owe $6200 from last year's returns. Apparently, they were missing my wife's W2's. After contacting Adept to make them aware of this notice, Adept explained that they too did not show that the W2's were scanned and sent to the IRS, however, we have our copies (W2's) in the folder they gave back to us after "completing" last year's returns. Instead of apologizing and fixing the situation, Adept FedEx'd our paperwork (2010 returns) back to us, without contacting us, in order to inform us that they have to "resign" as our accountant because they can't offer the level of service we expect from them as our CPA. This has left us with having to find another preparer in a short period of time in order to meet the April 15th deadline. On top of all of this, we have requested that they send us our files (2007, 2008 & 2009) so we can have our recently hired CPA review only to have received a part of our request (2008/ 2009).
