So i was told to contact AFNI where my account had been sold. So i called and that lady was just so RUDE!!! Basically calling me a liar, and telling me my only option is to pay this 800.56 dollar bill!! Does anyone know if there is futher actions i can take to resolve this matter without paying for something i had NO IDEA about?

Bogus Collection
I received a letter from this company stating I owed for a bill from Direct TV. I contacted the company and the lady Ginger awnsered stating that it was from 2004 and it was debt that was over 6 years old. I do not owe any bills to Direct TV and this letter was the first I heard about this. I believe this company is running a scam. I am sending a letter to dispute this. Beware of these types of scams.

outstanding bill
I received this notice from AFNI Collections, stating that they "acquired" this account for collections. This notice is saying that I owe nearly $100! I cancelled my QWEST account a year ago, and I paid my final balance to them! I have never received a call or letter from QWEST saying that I still had a balance owed. They do have my correct phone number, but that is easy enough to find since I have had that same number for many years (with QWEST). This is so infuriating, because I the letter looks very real and threatening.

Suspicious Settlment Offer
I have been contacted by this "company" and offered a settlement of half of the bill (200.76, asked to pay 11.38) that I owed for Verizon North Inc. Smells fishy since this is NOT the collection agency that was dealing with this (true) debt. (my sister was divorced and I got her a phone in my name and she honestly forgot to pay the bill when she moved again) and we had no idea about this debt until I was attempting to buy my house and checked my credit report and I contacted Verizon MYSELF to get this debt resolved and they sent me to their collection agency, which was NOT AFNI!

I recieved this settlement offer from AFNI on 7/7/2009 and I was staying with friends at the time and it came to their address in my name, how they got that information, I have no clue. I did not move into my new house until 7/14/2009 so this was fishy from the start.

We got our tax returns so I was settling debt and when tried to go to the website listed on the collection it didn't exist, and upon a google search I found this site, and thank goodness!

BE CAREFUL out there!

I hope people do realize that by law a company cannot attempt to collect a debt that is over 7 years old. If you are being billed for a debt that is older than that, the most likely scenario is that it is fraud.

ripoff - fraud
These people lie! Why aren't these people stopped? They said I owed AT&T or Bellsouth 74.31 from an account in 2003. I have NEVER had a phone company account in my name for AT&T, Bellsouth or any other company.

The interesting thing is that they said they would "settle" the account for $25.00. How many unsuspecting people would think maybe I should just pay this so I won't have to worry... it's only $25.

Well, $25 here and $25 there adds up quickly and easily become $1000's and that falls into the felony range. Why isn't law enforcement doing something? Judging by the other complaints I'm obviously not the first!

AFNI COLLECTIONS HUGE SCAM!!!
as well as many other people i have recieved a "settlement offer" for the amount of "$50.00" on a "$539.18" t-mobile bill that was past due since 2003. i called the 800 # and spoke to a man who @ the time sounded as if he really was from a debt collection agency and when he asked for my last four # of my SS # he gave me my name which threw a red flag up. also as i was taking a second look @ the letter they mailed me, it didnt really look like a letter that a collection agengcy would mail out(usually collection agencies are through lawyers offices). another thing that came to me was, why if t-mobile hasn't attempted to contact me about this so called matter, 6 years later would a collection agency do so. i checked my credit report and there isnt even such a thing on it, so obviously this fake company with fake workers is a real scam and the people on the other end of the phone need to be caught and arrested for stealing not only peoples money but their identity and information and everyone needs to be more cautious on supplying info over the phone or through the mail!!!

Bogus charges
They sent us a collection notice for $246.77 original creditor being Verizon California. Well the strange thing is the bill came on my wife and her ex husband name to our address which is located over 2500 miles away. They mentioned that the account is for a phone number which my wife never had before, and she lived in Redondo Beach, which is not true either. They are using a phone number which my wife never had before, placed her in a city she never even visited before, collecting in 2009 a bill from 2001!
Hey! That is a lot of mismatch! When you will try to call them they are making you feel guilty! So do not fall for that. Is their way to convince that the lie which are trying to push on you is true.
I had a similar experience for myself with a company in TX but after I took them to their local BBB they stopped their letters to me. I hope that will work with this strange situation in here too!

Scam/Identity Theft
This week. My 65 year old mother received a collection bill from AFNI for $285. She has not had an account with AT&T for over 15 years.

When I called AFNI, 888-804-2409, a person by the name of Natradine? answered the phone. She wants the last four digits of my mothers social security number to retrieve the account. I informed her, I have already entered the account number when I called in. Why do you need a social security number? She said it was needed to retrieve my mothers account.

When I informed her my mother is a retiree who has not had an AT&T account for over 15 years. I asked her where they got their information from. She said they got it from AT&T and are trying to collect a debt.

I told her, "thank you for letting me know. This message has been recorded and will be submitted to the MN Attorney Generals Office, " She was speechless and surprised. She tried to ask for last four numbers of my mothers social security number again, but I would not budge. I told her, they should seize scamming elders for money because the law will catch-up to them and I hung-up.

I was extremely upset because my mothers identity was stolen five years ago and used to open-up an account in Georgia for a gas card. A collection agency sent her a bill for $578.00. The case was reported to our local police department and submitted to the collection agency. The collection agency has stopped calling and sending letters to harass my mother after the police got involved.

Its amazing what can happen to anyone. So many crooks out there. They should all get the death penalty!!!
