Bad experience
After years of coverage and multiple policies for our 4 pups with the AKC Pet Partners Insurance the time came for me to have utilized it for our adored pup. He was sick – no question about that. I had insurance – or so I thought. Our sweet boy was hospitalized, required an MRI of the brain which indicated some sort of a lesion, then developed nephritis, later he came down with aspiration pneumonia and also had an emergency hospital visit as well. It ended much to my heart break with the loss of this sweet boy when I was told that it was medically necessary to euthanize him. I had thought I had credible coverage through the AKC Pet Insurance. WRONG! One the Wellness Plan (most enriched plan and very expensive) through the AKC they AKC denied medications, MRI, further diagnostics, medical treatment and hospitalizations INCLUSIVE of euthanasia.
So consumers BEWARE of such an organization. These were unrelated situations that they denied.
I had registered our pups with the AKC when they made the offer of this insurance upon AKC registration of our puppy years back – how could I go wrong with the AKC? In EVERYWAY!! In addition recently, they have denied testing on our other pup for a simple test of giarda on the Wellness Plans which are the most enriched plan (allegedly) through the AKC – they denied that too.
I have dropped the insurance with this deplorable coverage offered through the AKC. I now have them insured with an honorable insurance provider that does not have the gimmicks the AKC Pet Insurance has to get out of paying claims.
CONSUMERS please check out www.petinsurancereview.com and see how many of us that patronized the AKC have shared similar experiences. This is a wonderful sight – they offer you information on ALL insurance providers.
I am now with Embrace and could not be happier with the customer service, the helpfulness, expertise and wisdom the representatives have. Embrace demonstrated timeliness with information, all something that I never ever received from the AKC Pet Insurance. Embrace offered a medical review process so you know UP FRONT what is exactly what. I may have a pre-existing condition for a pup, but that by far out weighs the knowledge of knowing what a reputable company I am now with. I hope none of my pups get as sick as my sweet boy did – but now knowing that they are TRULY insured with an outstanding insurance provider I sleep better. You can tell in just speaking with Embrace they truly staff animal lovers!
Who wants to be with a company that when you are at your wits end with the loss of your pet, they even deny euthanasia as a final slap in your face?
Please check out the reviews for yourself at www.petinsurancereview.com and BEWARE of the AKC. Clearly it is a shared experience being dissatisfied by many AKC Policy Holders.

Don't Tust
I am very disheartened with what I thought was a respectable insurance provider. The AKC has only provided disproportionate premium increases and not provided a practical product. You pay over a $1, 000 dollars in annual premiums on the Wellness Plan; yes they will reimburse you after the deductible for heartworm, annual shots. This does not offset the despicable reimbursements (if any) being with the AKC insurance. They lose submitted claims, the customer service is rude, they pay on a fee schedule which is something unrealistic, and won’t cover hereditary conditions or arthritis, and the processing of the claim is sluggish. The frustration you undergo is incredible being with this provider. I have cancelled this insurance and so glad I did. Now my sweet baby is covered with Embrace, a provider that actually provides customer service, GET THIS even hereditary conditions, arthritis, allows you to customize the plan, reimbursements not based on a fee schedule and you select the percentage of reimbursement, no “per incident” deception as the AKC has – that is a huge one – so watch out for that! ABOVE ALL – my new carrier communicates with experienced professionals who are thoughtful, attentive, considerate, compassionate kind as well as timely claim processing, and well-informed staff. I had many an experience with the AKC insurance. I was with the AKC for 5 years so I speak with experience on how dreadful they are as an insurance provider. My advices to anyone with or considering the AKC Pet Insurance read the fine print – and stay away. When I needed it the insurance for illness they were NEVER there, I can say the AKC has disappointed me in everyway !

AKC Pet Health Insurance
have had multiple pet policies with the AKC for my 4 dogs for YEARS
This insurance is only good for the SMALL STUFF! When you truly need it, they will claim some NONSENSE and deny the claim or give you some line of garbage. I had 3 seperate hospitalization for my poor pup as well as diagnostic. I believed I had $13, 000 in coverage. The AKC took the 3 seperate hospitalization and lumped it together as one illness - which were UNRELATED -- and didn't pay as the policy indicated they would.
Unfortunately, I needed the insurance and the AKC did NOT PAY as they claim as they sold the policy. Clearly on the one EOB they CLEARLY indicate one ailment and on the second they indicate another in Denied it along with an MRI of the brain which indicated a lession UNRELATED to nephritis.
I STRONGLY suggest if you are purchasing insurance, and think you have a piece of mind knowing you have your beloved pet covered, THEY ARE NOT based on my experience with the AKC Pet Healthcare Plan under WELLNESS which is one of most comprehensive plans.
I am taking the matter to the IL Dept of Insurance - Public Service Section.
I ask you... do you want to deal with the AKC; and the added loss of your beloved pet and UNPAID Claims of over $8, 000.
You are best checking out an insurance company that pays an annual maximum WITHOUT a per incident restriction. For myself, there were 3 separate hospitalizations that the AKC is considering ONE INCIDENT and DENYING diagnostics as well and lumping UNRELATED medical conditions as the same.
In the end I will see what the IL Dept of Insurance states, but BEWARE -- do you want to deal with this? Unexpected expenses when you are paying a high premium for YEARS and the loss of your beloved pet and these idiots?!
Then if all of this is not bad enough try and get a returned telephone call, the claims submitted are lost and the turn around is very slow moving. The ultimate is this though -- all the years I thought I had decent coverage for my pups and I had nothing really but an expensive premium times 4!

Dear Complaint Board; August 4, 2009
Hello; I'm writing from New York. I'm writing in complaint of the AKC Pet Healthcare Plan based in Raleigh, NC underwritten by Markel Insurance (Virginia). Previously underwritten by State National (Texas). My issue at hand is that I currently am treating my 6 year old German Shepherd Dog with Kidney Dialysis 2x a week due to kidney disease / failure. AKC Pet Healthcare won't provide any dialysis coverage. Dialysis for a pet is extremely expensive & impractical for the average pet owner alone. This is where pet insurance companies should step up. People can get dialysis if they need it and it is covered by human insurance. Why not our pets too!! I value my dog's life. Our companion animals are part of the family. Anyway down the road I'm faced with a potential financial & emotional dilemna. Pet owners like myself in crisis might be forced to euthazize our pets. Since my dog is so young, I do not wish to euthanize. I want to keep on fighting. So there is a discrepancy in the system that an animal hospital charges astronomical prices for dialysis that even pet insurance companies can't afford let alone pet owner's themselves. Is there anything I can do to combat the insurance company or you can do or the government can do. Like writing a letter of appeal to the pet insurance company or can the government implement some regulation or policy that would give pet owners complete access to long term chronic care for their pets if their owners are willing to go the extra mile. Treatment is automatic for people. Currently my case is under investigation through the N.Y. State Insurance Dept. I just received word from them that they cannot decide my case. It is a matter of facts as to the liability of the pet insurance company. It has to be taken to court that has jurisdiction. I am willing to go to court. I need to hire an attorney who is willing to take on this case. My goal in court is for an arbitrator to settle this dispute and reach a means for both sides which would include long term ongoing continued dialysis coverage for my dog. Isn't that what insurance is for right? This is a humane & moral issue. Thank You GC [email protected]
