The Truth about Wireless!
All 8 complaints I read on this page are full of misinformation to make these consumers sound like they got ripped of. Several of these facts are made up and just not true. For the truth in cellular customer service, see how Alltel stacked up in the last Consumer Reports that covered cell phone carriers. I'm not an employee of Alltel, but i am a customer. I also am a researcher for a consumer watchdog group and have checked several different cell phone companies. Statements such as "When June came, I called to cancel and was told that I needed to cancel on the exact day of the month I signed up on 12 years prior which I had missed by 3 days. Since I missed that day, my contract on that line was automatically renewed for 2 more years" are not true. This customer was either misinformed (and all companies, not just cell phone companies, have employees that make mistakes) or he's lying about this to make his complaint sound better. Alltel's policy is to only renew contracts for phone discounts.
Also, the contact info for the corporate office that everyone claims is impossible to find is listed on the website under "contact us". The people with attention spans too short to pay attention to what they are buying are usually the same people that miss this contact info on the web. go figure. All cell phone companies operate with contracts that lock you into services. Alltel is the ONLY company that will provide you an invoiced (post pay or non-prepaid) service without a contract if you don't accept a discount on the phone.
All cell companies have spots where your phone won't work. no where on ANY cell company plans does it say "This phone will work perfect at your house". Also, if you bought this as a "mobile" phone, then why do you say things like "I have been an Alltel customer for 5 years. I recently moved to an area that is still serviced by Alltel and I am able to get 1 bar (sometimes) at my residence. I have called Alltel and was told they can't guarantee service, yet won't let me out of my contract due to the inability to use my phone. It seems I must pay for a service that I cannot use."? Didn't you buy the phone to use when you're not at your house?
These complaints are mostly repeated to every company by the same people who want something for nothing or want to be compensated for their own ignorance. The post about the retail store is certainly a valid complaint - but notice it was also written by the most polite person on here and they didn't add in a bunch of nonsense. Real complaints are usually few and far between. Consumers should beware of angry people with nothing to say...
Feel free to email with questions about cell phone companies. I can offer tips on how to handle problem situations and am experienced with all major carriers.

National Freedom plan is not what they say it is!
We have been customers with Celluarone for years then of course Alltel buys them out and we have had nothing but problems since. We changed to the "National Freedom Plan" back in November. This is pretty much no roaming, no long distance etc. In certain areas we could chance getting roaming charges, but we were explained those would be in very remote places. For the last approx. 3 months every month we have been charged roaming in area that we go to on a regular basis, have always made phone calls from and never charged before! Then when I call to dispute it they don't even care about your concerns. They are nothing but rude and when trying to find a number to put a formal complaint in, well that is IMPOSSIBLE! We can drive all the way from Colorado to Florida and no roaming anywhere, but we go about 75 miles from our home we get charged. Then we travel to DENVER which we go to on a regular basis and all of the sudden we have $20 worth of roaming in Denver even though we were just there a couple weeks or so before and did not get roaming charges. EXPLAIN THAT ALLTEL?? Another thing is that they cannot do anything about the roaming charges (which is a bunch of poop), but it is o.k. for our phones to be "SEARCHING FOR NETWORK" yesterday for Five hours and we were unable to use our phone service which we pay for, and they in no way try to make that right either! ALLTEL is a RIP OFF and I will proceed until I find the access to make a formal complaint rather dealing with these rude customer service people!

Billing and harrssing
Alltell compounds the billing hoping to collect more after they have been told by mail on their own billing notice they have been cancelled. Then they act as though nothing is going on and continue billing even after they state the service has been stopped. This is going on now here in Arizona as we speak and of coarse they harass by home home to top it off.example... jan.06... they were told to stop... may 07, they are still billing and harassing.

Account was turned to collections
I closed a wireless phone account with Alltel in 2002 because of frequent billing errors. At the time the account was closed Alltel sent me a letter stating what they would accept as final payment to close the account which was $300. I then sent a check to alltel for $300. In 2004 I got a notice from a collection agency for the final payment, which I had paid and the payment had cleared my bank. When I called alltel they would not even talk to me about my account because it had "been turned over to collections".
I have a copy of the final check paid to alltel and it shows a different account then mine on the back side of the check (off by one digit). So it looks like alltel posted my payment to the wrong account, but again alltel will not discuss this as they no longer have my account, the collection agency does. The latest collection agency (AFNI) says my check copy and letter from alltel is not good enough proof that this was paid. What else can I possibly give them. (although in their last letter deny my dispute they say a copy of my drivers license and social security card "might" help. Yeah, right!
I have contact the Alltel corporate office to try and get help clearing this up, but I don't even get a response from them.
Can you point me in the right direction to help settle this matter, it has been almost 5 years since I paid this bill.

Payment authorization problem
I had gotten a plan with Alltel that included 2 phones. I knew I wasn't going to use both so I let my friend use one. I had my phone suspended that same month and let her know that she would have to make the payments. So, back in November I got a notice that the account was delinquent and about to go to a credit collector. So I set up payments with the Financial department to have the $603 bill paid off by Jan 17, 2007. I was told that the account could only be paid in cash. I put a security code on the account, took her name off and made her unauthorized to do any thing with the account.December comes around and I find out that someone has made a payment on the account and they don't know who it was or what they paid with. Beginning of January I get a bill saying that I owe them $952. I call them and no one is able to tell me any thing or who authorized for the phone to be turned back on. Customer service said that when the account is suspended and the amount is paid in full the system automatically turns it back on. They even let the girl put a new phone on the account. I would have had better luck letting it go to a credit collector and setting up payment arrangements. Alltel says any one can pay your bill. So if someone feels like adding countless numbers of bad check fees onto your account they can.

No local number available
I purchased a prepaid plan and from from ALLTEL on their website. It prompts you for a zip code. When I put in my zip code it had phones and prepaid service available. However when I got my phone the number was not local. They will not give me a local number. My complaint is that NOWHERE and their website did it say it's possible I would not get a local number. If it would have, I would have checked first and gone with something else. I've contacted them, I've submitted a BBB complaint and they still have not changed their website to add a statement saying it's possible you will not get a local number and they will not give me a refund. Alltel stated if I got a different plan a local number would be available. BEWARE that before you get prepaid make sure they have a local number available in your area if that is important to you.

Mobile phone leader cover problem
I had the misfortune to need to replace a protective cover for my Altel cell phone and entered the altel office in Sarasota on 10/17/06. I found the item I needed but there were 4 customers ahead of me and only two employees to handle the their needs. A fight nearly broke out between two men over who was next. Finally, after waiting 50 minutes, a third employee came out and took about 10 minutes to set up her desk. I was next and her indifference and cold attitude made me realize that maybe my wife and I and our inlaws might end our 18 year relationship with Altel. We have a contract but it will run out at which time I think we will take our business elsewhere.

Too bad, so sad
I have been an Alltel customer for 5 years. I recently moved to an area that is still serviced by Alltel and I am able to get 1 bar (sometimes) at my residence. I have called Alltel and was told they can't guarantee service, yet won't let me out of my contract due to the inability to use my phone. It seems I must pay for a service that I cannot use. The service rep even looked up my address and admitted to poor serivce in my area. I have her admission recorded because I called from work and we have voice recording for quality control purposes.
I am shocked at the poor customer service (or rather NO SERVICE) from Alltel. The "too bad, so sad" attitude I received made me even more angry!!!
My company has over 4 dozen phones with Alltel and an average monthly bill of over $2300. Today I made an appoitment for a sales rep from Cellular One to meet with me so we can begin the process of changing our carrier. thank God, we don't have a contract for our business phones!

Scams & lies!
I've been an Alltel customer for years on end. My problems with this company and their lack of cooperation seems endless. I've had problems in the past with roaming charges showing up on my bill.
When I pointed out that I had not been in those areas of my state making calls, I was told the signal will jump to the next closest tower if the one in my area is not available. I chased them for 3 months trying to receive credits that I was promised but was unable to make any progress. NOW, I activated a second line on my account and tried to cancel the other because it was used for a business that I had recently sold. I was told I would be charged a $200 cancellation fee for the original line unless I waited until June. So I paid $50 per month for 3 months on a line I wasn't using. When June came, I called to cancel and was told that I needed to cancel on the exact day of the month I signed up on 12 years prior which I had missed by 3 days. Since I missed that day, my contract on that line was automatically renewed for 2 more years. They refused to help and gave me the # of an office Manager. I called and left 7 messages over 3 weeks and never received a return call to this day. I tried to cancel the second line as a result and was told I would have to pay $200 to cancel that one also. So now I'm up to $400 in cancellation fees if I cancel or change companies within 2 years!! While trying to straighten this out, I was told that since I bought a new Razor phone with a rebate, I HAD to sign up for a new more expensive service plan or face being charged outrages prices by the minute rather than continuing on my Unlimited Plan because my new phone was not compatible with my old plan.?? I went into a location in Chandler AZ and found an employee that told me "off the record" that I was being lied to by the Rep. because he was probably seeking a commission and not to worry about it. I called again in August to once again try to cancel the second line I wasn't using and was told their was nothing he could do and to continue to try to call the Manager that wouldn't return my calls! THEN, he started in with the same story of how I needed to sign up for a new more expensive plan because my new phone wasn't compatible!!!! I explained I was never told any of this when I bought the phone, he offered a half assed apology, refused to cancel my other line without a $200 fee and continued to try to get me to agree to convert to a more expensive plan!
I'm done! I'll be canceling it all when I get back into town. This company needs a good old fashioned class action law suite!! It should be illegal to be lied to, given misinformation and to renew contracts without consent, explanation, notification or signatures. Now, I have to choose between being raped financially or destroying my credit.
I'M WARNING EVERYONE I CAN NOT TO USE THIS COMPANY!!!
THEY NEED TO BE PUT OUT OF BUSINESS!
