The American media is conspicuously silent when it comes to holding the government accountable for the impact of special interest legislation on the well-being of the American public. Although newspapers and reporters
may occasionally run an ephemeral article about a gift to big business, coverage of the real social impacts rarely, if ever, evolve into sustained scrutiny and analysis. The American media is obsessed with portraying the perfect body. Throughout its many channels, many women and men learn to identify with the perfect images displayed. Being thin, having great muscle tone and, for women, having big breasts are what Americans view as perfection. The American media is under public pressure. The conservative fascists in the media (Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, the very racist FrontPage Magazine and its demagogue David Horowitz, and Anne Coulter) are leaning on them, pulling the heartstrings of an uneducated American public that has been confused by the causes of September 11th.
The media is incapable of providing us with pictures of the fallen through anything other than a murky lens. In addition, there are images of the coffins arriving home -- the Department of Defense has released several photos of these arrivals. The media is much more independent than that of most of the world. The government exerts little to no control over publishing and broadcasting, with minor exceptions for indecency and libel which are often difficult to prosecute or prove. The media is often perceived as being free, especially the liberally-inclined arm. However why do we think this?
The media is a powerful, powerful entity and tool used for good and ill. If they reported seriously on female athletes and frequently on female athletes (and women assure they are being portrayed in a proper light), the American public would finally get the right, non-gender-marking picture. The American Media is the most racist media on the planet, the way it degrades all other races and cultures.
