Lowered Credit Limit
They lowered my credit limit from almost $18, 000 to $4000. I have a score of 725+.
When i called, they said i have bad credit report, so i pulled my report from Experian, and nothing wrong with it.
So i called back, and they start giving me different excuses, i just told them to close the account.
Do not trust them, they are bad, seems like they will be out of business soon...

Gift Card
I recieved a Gift Card for Christmas with $25.00 on the account. I used the G.C. once, but not to it's full amount.
I wanted to use this card again in combination with a few other G.C's I had recieved so I called the number on the back of the card to find out what my remaining balance was.
The number I called had been changed so I took note of the new # that was given to me. I called the second # and was informed that it was no longer in service as well. My phone call was then automatically rolled over to a voice mail that was going to tell me the 3rd number to call, but was cut off in the middle of the information given. I was told by a computer voice to call again another time.
After repeated attempts to find out my balance I gave up and determined that my family had just been "JIPPED".
I will be informing them and anyone else who will listen not to purchase a gift card from American Express because if you don't use it all the first time you will get ripped off.

Fraud and cheating
That's right folks with a credit score of 719 I found out today that American Express, just this morning, lowered my credit limit on my American Express Business Platinum card. They lowered my limit to $400 dollars above my current limit.
I just made a payment of $1, 000 on this card last week. I was no where near my limit but my charge was rejected, wouldn't you know, when I was trying to buy airline tickets to take my family vacation.
This is a new practice that the financial world is now employing if you haven't heard about it, let me share what I know. They now do periodic reviews of your credit and based on their questionable formulas of the debt ratio you have on other cards and other information about your credit that doesn't pertain to the account you have with them at all, they make decisions to lower or even cut off your credit.
This is what we get for bailing them out with billions. I am sure all the fat cats at the top got their bonuses and instead of opening up the lines of credit to encourage confidence and spending, they are going into a hoard mode. UNBELIEVABLE!!!
I have been a member with AMX since 1981, usually the gold card that you pay off at the end of the month. So AMX comes out with this new business card plan and offer me this card to purchase equipment for start up and now they cut my limit in half.
What a way to stimulate the economy and encourage more economic growth. Cut available credit so you can't expand. This is only the tip of the iceberg I am afraid. But as for American Express, they have lost a loyal customer that will find another place to do business.

Lowering Credit Line for No Reason
I have been a customer with American Express since 2000 with no late payments. They recently sent me a letter reducing my line of credit from $13, 000.00 to $6300.00. My experience with Amex has been an exact duplicate of a report I see here from a California customer. When I questioned their action, I too was told I had 'too many delinquent accounts' 'and I was late paying my mortagage - I do not have delinquencies and I am not late on any of my mortgages. I had pulled my credit reports prior to contacting AMEX as my bank account had recently been compromised and I feared ID theft. My credit reports were all clear: no delinquencies, no late payments. I proceeded to make repeated calls to American Express working my way up to the Department manager of their RLA department. I explained that the false information they gave me regarding 'delinquencies' had caused me a great deal of distress and wasted time contacting the credit bureaus to investigate. American Express are now telling me that what I see on my Experian credit report is not what they are seeing and 'I have too many delinquencies'. I did manage to speak with Experian directly, they assured me that the credit information they sent to me is the same information supplied to vendors. They also said they are receiving a lot of complaints from American Express customers for the same reasons I list here. I am appalled at the conduct of American Express and their blatant and willfull misrepresentation of customer's alleged 'bad credit'. I am contacting the FTC tomorrow and will update this site, I too believe this must surely be an illegal practice. If it isn't, it should be.

Account sent to collection
My American Express payment was less than 30 days past Due. I had contacted AMEX last week to make arrangements and was told they would put me on a payment plan and to call them back when I could make the first payment. Less than one week later I received a call from a collection agency requesting full payment of the balance. In addition, I was told that the default interest rate was as much as 37%. I received no call or message from AMEX prior to them sending it to collection.

FYI(as an "insider) to cardmembers
as an "insider"...i think all cardmembers should read ahead. as an individual, i don't agree with the info. i'm simply informing you. amex will not be over-nighting cards to hardly anyone anymore. you can escalate the call, yell at the rep, supervisor, threaten to cancel(which in amex eyes, does u more harm than them)...threaten to use a different type of credit card, etc. all the letters, yelling at reps, asking for superviors, i swear, will get you nowhere. nothing will. this is a big co. with their legal advisors and everything people complain about is usually in the terms and conditions that ppl fail to read. i know nobody wants to read it..it takes a lawyer to decipher the jargon anyway. amex holds their employees to high standards, i can tell u that. they have a list of expectations of how to treat the cardmember. some of the stuff is sappy and patronizing, if u ask me, but if not stated, etc...a job can be lost. when u have had your card counterfeited, etc...don't expect amex to find out who and how it was actually done. just rest assured amex eats the charges. don't ask the rep "how did this happen"? they don't know. please...if u r going to travel...even to another state...let amex know. i know some don't realize the importance and think it's dumb...if you worked and saw what reps see...u would know why cards get declined when u r travelling just one state away! it's beyond how dumb it is to inform amex...it's a matter of way of life and the world we live in today. the automated system is bad. just keep pressing zero...a rep will eventually come on and get u to the dept u need. when asked for I.D., don't get all snappy. reps are used to this...and don't take it personal...it's almost robotic. YOU called amex...so YOU should feel comfortable with giving your password or whatever other ID is asked. a password is not going to be overridden just because you are mad. termination of one's job isn't an option, so yelling, etc...is a waste of your time. please...when u get a letter about a change in terms of agreement and u say automatically that it's a fraudulent account..pls. calm down. 99% of these are something u signed up for...no activity, no bal, and after you have gone off on everyone...then say.."oh...i think i DO recall this acct.". if you cannot give us the security code on the front of your card...don't call to have your name changed or replaced because it's damaged and so on. the system simply won't allow it unless the code can be verified, unless you want new card number. if you didn't get your renewal card and it's been a while and should have gotten it...dont ask WHY does the car number have to change! quit saying everyone's card number on the same account are the same. they are not. the last few digits will always be different. they are billed on the same statement though. don't call to replace your card because it's "worn out" when u know u have no further charges. even if a rep doesn't check an acct. and sends a card to you anyway...u will still get declined. the reps know every trick in the book. people even call because a certain vendor swiped their card and it got declined...then tell u they just used it an hour ago at such and such store and it worked fine. reps can see when a card was used, attempted to be used, etc. up to the second. don't lie...just ask for a replacement. no problemo. you don't need an "excuse" to replace your card. reps want to help u with that. no matter how mad you are. i can assure you that u will get someone to step out of the box and atleast try more than they have to if you can calm down because when u yell, threaten...the rep just leans back in the chair, lowers the phone volume and isn't usually moved by the rant. reps hands are tied. they are on the front-lines. remember...they are working for the company who is making you so mad and implementing all of the "policies" and live under the gun too. help reps, help u. they are your best ally, because they know how the system works. this goes for all depts. in all countries and states. yes, amex outsources. you won't change that. the economy is a mess. you shouldnt be shocked at upcoming changes. should you like them? no! it is, what it is though. a big thing is to be very careful if u use your cards in houston, ny, miami, ft lauderdale, nj, mass., certain areas of s. ca. and las vegas. some places are higher fraud than others. even places in ga. some areas are more prevalent with counterfeiting cards using skimmers. dont get mad because you are at a store trying to purchase a 3000.00 item and your card declines. there's too much fraud! they must make sure it's you! it's not an insult like...how dare u decline me...i spend X amt of money a mo. and so on. just call before u make a big purchase or communicate w/the rep and it will be authorized quickly. u may be embarrassed because of the ppl in line behind you, but you will be MAD if it was an item NOT purchased by you because amex went ahead and auth. it because you spend so and so amt of money per yr!!! then it's a bigger problem when u see your statement or go online. you will be upset either way. for members who have been w/amex for a long time...the sad fact is, times and things have changed over the yrs. dont expect things to not change w/amex. there's alot that i see which i know is bad w/amex. bad for the cardmembers. i'm not condoning amex's way of doing business. this is just to inform you of just a small tidbit of what i do know...so you don't have such a difficult time when u call, etc.

Beware Of American Express
American Express must be in trouble, they recently cut my credit line with no warning. I checked my credit report nothing has changed and they have never contacted me except with letter that has inaccurate information. I personally do not care as I never used the line of credit with them. They lost my business and I wish them the best as their stock price hit its 52 week low and is half its value. Where there is smoke there is fire! I will bet dollars for doughnuts they have huge mess on their hands.

cancelled card with no notice
Recently paid off balance on my American Express, went into to online account the next day to make sure everything was good, and found out that the card had been cancelled. Called customer support to find out what was going on, and she told me my credit score had fallen and the received some info from experion with serious deliquency. Only thing on my credit report was the same thing that was on there when i got the card in first place, 1 late payment for my car. I will never do any busy what so ever with american express. This is not how you treat customers that have a good standing, 0 balance and never been late. I suggest if you have american express you should dump them immediately before you get dumped without notice

Increased Interest Rate
Received my statement today (1/8/09) and while I just checking out all the money I spent for Christmas shopping I thought that the finance charge was a little higher than usual. Took a glance at the rate and to my disbelief it read 10.99% ---What? What's up with that I thought. Wasn't late on my last payment, didn't remember seeing any notice on the last bill (I rechecked) and didn't receive any letter notification about any increase.
Call up customer service- speak to a rep and ask her why did my rate increase 3 percentage points and she replied everyone in a certain number range on the card received the increase and were notified in November in a letter that was sent.
Told her I didn't receive any letter - she said it was sent - I said I didn't get it - she apologizes and said it was sent.
I say - please...do you think I or anyone else would have charged so much money knowing that the rate was increasing. I also said it was kinda low-handed that AE decided to increase rates in a month where people would be using their cards more than any other time of year.
CLASSLESS MOVE AMERICAN EXPRESS-CLASSLESS.
