Reduction of credit line
After years of a good relationship;after inviting me to a higher level of credit, Platinum ($35.000) and with a balance of $11.000, without being late and paying a higher membership fee, without a curtesy call, let us say 6 months ago, they E-Mail me informing me of the reduction. Now even my FICOscore will be negatively effected. So my dear fellow Americans let us send American Express millions of e-mails telling them that behind every account there is a person, a family that takes PRIDE in having a good credit line. Thank you. [email protected]

Limiting Spending
I own a small business. American Express always advertised it was the only credit card we would ever need. I've been a loyal faithful customer for 26 years since 1982. During that time I've charged millions of dollars on the Gold Corporate Executive Card for which I'm charged an annual fee. It has no preset limit, or should I say, HAD? I've never missed a payment in 26 years.

This past Saturday I received an email advising effective immediately my entire company is now capped at $2, 000 per month. I called AMEX thinking this had to be a mistake? I was advised that it was no error and that they had changed policy effective immediately.

I was in a state of shock as I have employees off on business trips. They would not make any exceptions. I had no payment due. I explained they were crippling all small businessmen. They couldn't care less.

I was told that to enjoy no preset limit (which we've had for 26 years) I had to have a FICO score of 750; plus a 40% ratio of equity to debt. I told AMEX that by lowering my ability to spend they were in effect putting me out of business if I couldn't make a business trip. And by capping me they were in effect lowering my FICO score by yet another 40 points. I argued that my Corporate Card was not a revolving line of credit as it's paid in full every month for the past 26 years. The bottom line was AMEX treated me as a second class citizen. Get rid of them now before they destroy your business.

Lowering Credit limits for no reason
My credit card limit was recently lowered from 17, 000.00 to 5, 000.00 dollars. When I called to question this action I was told that I have delinquent accounts on my credit report and that my proportion of balance was to high. The people I talked to said that My credit score showed delinquent accounts, so I went and looked at my credit report which I pay American Express to monitor, and nothing has changed for a long time. I have had no delinquent accounts in a long time, and I certainly have not have had any since I applied for this card and got it about 8 months ago. They told me that they credit report I was looking at which was all threee of the credit reporting agencies was only 75% accurate. How is that possible what am I paying them for if I only get some of my credit report? They then told me that I do not pay enough each month, in November of 2008 I paid 9, 000.00 dollars, well above the minimum payment, also I pay more than the minimum payment every month. My question is the legality of this. I assume this hurts my credit, and If they do this whithout good cause and without any grounds is that legal? They will not tell me anything more but that, I just dont see how this is legal. Also this happened to my parents company. They own a small buisness, and American Express cut their credit limits and told them it was do to credit scores. When hey researched it they found that they were wrong and that their credit was excellent and they always paid their bill, American Express gave them the run around for 6 months until they just gave up. This is wrong if not legally than morally!

From prestigous to sub-standard
American Express has become a sub-standard card. During the holiday season numerous places of business denied the card complaining that they are charging retail vendors too much. It was also turned down by several restaurants, one of which I was lucky enough to have just enough cashto pay the check and had to apologize to the waitress for stiffing her.

I also booked a flight the beginning of Dec. to the Dominican Republic using my membership rewards points. The Am Ex operator directed me to go online and use 67, 239 points...the equivilent of what she said was a $672.39 ticket. Now, I found out that I could have transfered 25, 000 miles to Jet Blue and booked it through them. So basically, Am Ex screwed me out of 42, 239 points!! I called to complain and when I couldn't get anyone on the phone from Am Ex that spoke clear english, I finally asked, "Where are you located?"

late billing/mailing issues
We have been American Express cardholders for years in order to access our car insurance through Costco. A couple of years ago American Express began a campaign to encourage cardholders to pay bills electronically. We preferred to avoid this payment option and noticed that despite being paid well in advence of the due date, we were told that the payements were arriving late. Customer service agents at AMEX told us it would be better to pay online and avoid this problem which they attributed to the post office. We chose not to do this but instead started paying by phone. Last month our bill was not even received until 13 days after the due date. The envelopes are prepaid so there is no record of the postmark and as usual customer service agents are blaming the post office for the delays and encouraging us to pay online to avoid these issues. We have never had a problem with any of our other mail! We called our local post office (who has fielded similar complaints from other American Express customers, some of whom had to pay for priority delivery to avoid late penalties) and they deny the problem is at their end but unfortunately they have no way to track the incoming bill without a postmark.
We have spoken to other Costco members who have had the exact same problem but most of them got tired of fighting late fees and switched to the online payment system. We also spoke with a Costco employee who was familiar with this problem from others who had similar experiences. She told us to fill out a complaint about AMEX and encouraged others to do the same...So if this has happened to you please let Costco hear about it and perhaps they will drop this credit card company in favor of a company that is more ethical.

Interest rate increase
"Stealth" Interest Rate Increase
Check your last two hard copy AMEX statements for "Important Information about your Account"
Buried in the fine print on the reverse side of your bill may be a note telling you that as of a certain date your APR on all new charges and previous balances will be increasing. (In my case 30% - from 9.99% to 12.99%)
When called they will attempt to distract you with a recital of AMEX's supposed benefits rather than give you a reason for the increase. When pressed all they can say is that they're doing this on a "lot of" cards.
I expressed my outrage clearly, figuring that my excellent credit and routine high (interest generating) balances would lead them to try to retain me as a customer. Guess again. They made no movement to retract their unwarrented so I immediatley cancelled their card after a (until now) good 10 year + relationship. All outstanding balances on this profitable card (for them) will be paid off within 60 days - and at the old rate since I closed the account.
My question is this ... Is this the kind of idiotic business plan we are now subsidizing with our bailout money. If it is, we are all in big trouble

Credit limit reduced
I have been a member of American Express since 1988. Started with their Green card and eventually been upgraded to Gold, Platinum and Centurion. In addition, I also have Amex Delta card and American Express Blue. On average month, I use around over 35 thousand US dollars for many years. I have always been current with my American Express payment and always sent payment on time. I am totally debt free except my mortage. I do not have any seconds nor owe any credit companies. Since last month, American Express called me and said they have put my Platinum card on hold until I clear payment of 2200 dollars. I was surprised to hear that they put my American Express card on hold and told me not to charge any further as they will be declined. I asked them the reason for this since I have done more than multi million dollar charges with them since i became one of their members. They told me that my recent chargesof $2200 and on my Platinum card was over the limit. I did not understand how they calculate their limits since I charge over 35K per month between all their cards. After long coversation, I asked them to cancel my Delta American Express card. Now I am considering cancelling the others. They perhaps forgot that I pay over 3k in annual fess and charge over 350k every year. They even asked to provide w2 and tax return to proof that I am capable of paying high limits. I asked if I ever paid late since 1988. The answer was NO from them. But they insisted that I have to make payments before they can take the hold out to charge again. I am very disappointed with Amrerican Express for being a very loyal member for over twenty years.

decreased credit is less than balance
AMEX BE AWARE!!! I have been with AMEX for several years. I have personal and business cards. I have never, ever missed a payment on any of the cards and my credit history was always great. Just last week my Amex card was declined - I was surpised, because as far as I know I had another $2, 000.00 of credit line to go. Anyway, I called Amex right away and I could not believe what I was hearing. Amex decreased my credit line - which would have been fine if it wasn't for very important detail: the amount of the new reduced line is $1, 650.00 less then my current card balance!!! So, it looks as I west $1, 650.00 over the limit!!! I got fees, I got "defaulted"!! American Express had nothing to say to me except that if I don't come up with that difference in literally a week than I will continue to be in default!! I am basically screwed! Amex is running me into the bancruptcy! It has to be illegal! Mind that I have been a good and loyal customer and nothing else for all those years!

Lowering Credit Limits
This action must be popular for American Express. I have credit cards that are increasing my limits because I'm a good customer, not lowering them. I never keep a high balance and have always paid on time and always piad 2 to 3 times more than the minimum due monthly. Lowering the credit limit on cards creats problems with your FICO. Is that Illegal? The company was the one that made the decision to give you that amount in the 1st place. They even gave me increases and I didn't have the card that long. I probably wasn't using it enough to suit them.
American Express lowered my credit limit from 4, 000 to 500. I received a notice stating "as a responsible lender we are sorry to inform you that due to review of your account we are lowering you limit to $500." No warnings nothing just did it. A good way to lose customers.
I called customer service and said I wanted to close the accounts I had and also made sure she knew I was no longer going to do business with them ever again. The rep just said she could transfer me to accounts and they could explain why. I said OK and told her that it wasn't going to change my mind. I was put on hold foir a few minutes and then was told it was going to be a 15 to 30 minute wait, so I just told her to close the accounts
The website has a secure message board to send messages but has been down for the last month. Nothing seems to work and you can't get help or explainations.

Fraud and scam
On December 13, 2008 I bought a $50 American Express gift card from CVS in Diamond Bar for my brother-in-laws birthday. Three days later he tried using the card and it was declined at three places. Turns out although the receipt claimed the card was activated it was not and contained a balance of $0 not $50 that was charged as well as a fee of $4.95.

I called AMEX customer service, they told me to fax over copies of the receipt of purchase, front and back of card, it's packaging and my state issued ID. I had this problem happen months ago and CVS called AMEX and resolved the problem within minutes and CVS issued me a new card in store. Now CVS has a 'new policy' with AMEX and customers MUST go through AMEX exclusively.

I think I'm getting the run around as I've read has happened to MANY other unsuspecting customers. I think a class action lawsuit may be in order! As well, if I don't get satisfaction from AMEX I will see if the local Los Angeles TV news stations want to hear the story of the big card company AGAIN ripping off the hard working consumers!
