raising interest rates
We had a line of credit - credit card with American Express that they raised the interest rate from 9.9% to 30% (we never made a late payment either) since Congress passed the bill. We made large payments to pay off the debt and after making our last payment (weeks before the due date) online we got a bill this month still owing $95 in interest! I called them and they refused to take off the interest. This company does not care one bit about the consumer and the hard times we are having. I encourage everyone to never open an American Express account and if you have one you are trying to pay-off - good luck they will suck you dry!

Incharge Debt Solutions
I was just on a debt management program with incharge debt solutions and they have been accepting my payment from them. I am talking about American Express. I have recieved a letter of some sort by Sam Grey. I was doing real good making payments with Incharge Debt Solutions. Do they have to right to cancel my account with Incharge Debt Solutions without me knowing about it. I had a call from Incharge themselves and i couldn't believe my ears on what i just heard on what American Express had done. Does AMerican Express have the right to do such a thing. I have been making payments, and they're saying that i haven't. Can you help me here? My cell phone number is 613-662-0538. You can give me a call at anytime.

Unauthorized Charge to Checking Account
My son would, on occasion, ask me to pay his American Express (AE) bills using my checks or he would phone in payments using my checing account number (I would say yes each time when AE asked if this was ok). My son then paid me cash to cover the payments. My son is now in a dispute over a $1, 100 charge and AE unilaterally (AND WITHOUT MY AUTHORITY OR MY SON'S REQUEST) took the $1, 100 from my checking account to pay the bill. I am not a co-signer on his credit card. He disputed this action and got the run-around. I then told my bank of the unauthorized electronic debit and they reversed the charge. AE is now charging my son $73 for a canceled electronic payment. My son is now also fighting AE over the $73 item.

Watch out if you pay another person's AE bill by authoring an electronic transfer from your checking acount!!!

Never again
I have been with American Express since 2002- never missed a payment. Suddenly, about a week ago, my Am Ex credit card was declined on couple of ocassions. I didn't think much of it and used other credit cards instead.

Today I received a letter from Am Ex, it seems that without any warning or prior notice, they decided to lower my credit line fro $25, 000 to $500. It so happaned that at a time I had a balance of $470, I'm sure a pure coincident. Luckily at the time I was not away on busines and I didn't have to rely on Am Ex to pay for a hotel, meals etc.

I used to admire Am Ex and think highly of them. Even though their action didn't affect me; however, I realized that I don't want to in any way be dependant on them. I called Am Ex and cancelled my account. I will never again do any business with AmEx.

Unpleasant experience
I just spent 63 minutes on the phone with American Express (most of the time on hold) trying to get someone to explain why 1) they lowered my credit limit and 2) why they raised my interest rate by 3%.

I was told that my credit limit was being decreased because I wasn't making large enough payments. For the past five months, my minimum payments totaled $829 while my payments totaled $1200. The customer service rep I spoke with, Kimone, informed me that the amount I paid was not enough to prevent my credit limit from being lowered. When I asked how much was enough to keep it from being decreased, she told me she didn't know but that "the customer is supposed to know to pay more." I fail to see the logic.

After having the second customer service rep, Darnell, keep me on hold for over 30 minutes in order to verify that American Express was raising my interest rate, he then transferred me to the third rep, Shanaine, who when asked why my interest rate was being raised replied "it's hard to say." World class customer service!

I must say I have been an American Express card holder for over 6 years and have NEVER had one problem. It's sad that they have decided to make the "little guy" pay for other's financial mistakes. I plan on taking out a personal loan and paying off this account (the same as I did with Discover - at a much lower interest rate).

Fraudulant Credit Reporting
American Express "helped" me when I could not pay in full and set me up on payments, with written agreement that it would not affect my credit.
After 8/12's of the agreement, they report me as cancelled card and write offf debt, even though I have met all terms of agreement, keep paying (one payment left) and they indicate on my credit report that they will keep it there until 2016!!!
They will not even talk with me when I call, they refer me to their legal dept in florida, who even neglected to respond to my attorney.
After expense, personal credit debacles, and now my business is being affected, I contacted a local TV station consumer reporter who aired a story on my plight.
American Express asked her not to air it when contacted, and she indicated that they should contact me and get it resolved, but they never have.
The story aired last night (1/6/10, and I have heard from others with similar stories.
American Express has ruined my personal and business life, and just ingores any attempt to fix it.
Please contact your local TV stations, ask them to do stories about your issues, and perhaps American Express will realize we are all real people and their actions affect all of us.

reduce balance
I have had my American Express card for several years. Card has always had a small balance on it, a very small percentage of available credit. Payments always made on time never late. Got a notice my credit line was reduced significantly and called the company. Ended up with a foreigner in another country reading from a script.Told me it would be one of several reasons he noted but could not tell me exactly which one. Complained he gave me options which were a crock of you know what. Talked more nothing from him basically told them that a loyal customer never late small balance on card had this done. Checked my credit score and it is 735! That is in the very low risk category. Essentially I told him I would just wipe my butt with American Express and then he could kiss it and hung up. I have read they have done this to quite a few people lately and it is a crock of BS! Never get an UnAmerican Express!

Increased interest rate
You just recently increased my interest rate to 15.25%, up from 9.99% when I originally opened my acct with you. What's up? Interest rates are dropping all over the place, and mortgage rates are under 5%. If anything you should be reducing interest rates, not increasing them. Your customer service supervisor refused to refer me to her manager or give me her manager's name, so it's pretty obvious there is absolutely no appeal process in place. It appears you just sit behind your desks and pull interest rate figures from the air, then cowardly insulate yourself from your victims?

unwarranted restrictions
In September we were informed by Amex that our bank accounts were no longer considered to be valid for payment, that our online payment privledges were suspended, our telephone payment privledges were suspended and that we could only mail them a check via snail mail for payments. There was no other explanation for this abusive and unreasonable action on their part. Prior to this notice, I was making all of my minimum payments on time every month via the web and we usually used either our own checking account or our mother's (my husbands mom's) checking account which she authorized us to use and we had used many times before to make payments with no problem.
Now we are behind in our payments because they made it impossible for us to make a payment. It is very difficult for me to get out and get a money order to mail to them because I have four small children, my husband is busy working full time and also in school pursuing a bachelors degree. We asked American Express to investigate this internally and they just sent us a letter only stating that our account has been cancelled by them. I have no idea why this all began with them, and I would gladly pay them their money if they would reinstate my on line payment privledges. My mother in law will gladly send them a letter to tell that that all of the payments that have been made (actually only possibly 2 or 3 payments were made by my mother in law) with her bank account which is also on the list of payment accounts on line, is completely authorized by her. They gave us no reasonable resolution for this only suspended all of our payment privledges and cancelled the account.
Please help.

user fees
I went to CVS to buy gift cards for my nieces for Xmas. I purchasedd several gift cards. I got home later and it struck me that I had paid more than the what the cards totaled. It was a brain cramp on my part. I looked at the receipt and saw I was charged a $5 fee per card. I am PAYING Amer Express to use their gift cards.

That is immoral-vile-and should be illegal. I will NEVER use Amer Express again. I will go without!!!
