American Home Shield Reviews

deceptive attempt to snare me into an account
I was home on a Wednesday recovering from a foot surgery. The phone range and the caller announced that I "need to renew" my American Shield Home Warranty account. I told him that I wasn't aware that I had such an account. He said "Oh yes, you do, and I sure hope that you haven't had any expenses for things that were covered, like your water heater, furnace ..." etc. So I told him that I would prefer to lookup my account online, adn hae gave the web-site address. To make a long story short, it turns out that I have no account with them, and they were just trying to scare me into setting one up.

Sleazy ! I recommend avoiding thes folks !

Fraudulent
The worse investment I ever made was entering into a contract with American Home Shield (AHS). Not only was I fooled into thinking I was going to save money, I also thought I was going to have stress free maintenance. WRONG! My experience with this company was horrific and I would advise everyone NOT to do business with them. They are deceptive amongst other things. Every time I needed service, the technician they sent (Someone from American Rescue Rooter) would report that the repair isn't covered due to me tampering with the unit, something being installed improperly, something too old or too dirty, etc. It was always, always an excuse not to cover the repair. Additionally, ARS guys would come out with no tools and just look at stuff without taking anything apart. I ended up paying for ALL repairs out of pocket. ARS always reported some lie to AHS who in turn would NEVER cover the repair. ARS, of course, would always give me their cost to cover the repair which was always near or over $1, 000. Every repairman that I paid after ARS said the problem was something totally different and charged me ALOT less! AHS solution is to send another contractor out with ME paying the service fee for this person too! You aren't allowed to use someone you know to be trusted and experienced...just the crafty techniques they hire. You can bet the 2nd contractor is going to confirm the 1st lie told by ARS. If the 2nd contractor by chance say something different, then they'll go with ARS...they can count on them to hold true to the original lie. AHS whole business is a SCAM! I've paid nearly $2, 000 in premiums and service fees alone. On top of this amount, I still had to pay for the repairs by qualified individuals. One plumber from ARS named Shawn fixed a leak in the basement apartment. He told me it was a problem with the toliet on the 2nd floor apartment and he fixed it (I thought it was strange there was no leaking in the 1st floor apartment). A week later, water was leaking in the basement again. I called AHS they said the Shawn reported that something was wrong with the 2nd floor toliet flange (which they of course don't cover)and the leak may appear again in the future. I told them the Shawn told me he sealed the 2nd floor toilet and the problem was fixed. I called ARS and got a hold of Shawn. I asked him why did he tell me one thing and AHS something else. At first he said he didn't tell AHS anything about a flange. Then he admitted he did. I asked him why would he do that. He said he was trying to save me money. He then told me ARS could fix the problem for $642 minimum. As usual, he knew the exact amount it would cost for ARS to fix the problem in this case the toilet flange. I've hired an independent contractor to find and fix the problem. He says the 2nd floor toilet flange has absolutely NOTHING to do with the leak in the basement. Talking with AHS about the problems I've experienced with them was equally frustrating. My requests to speak to a supervisor were never granted. The customer service reps, especially one named Nicole, treated me like I am the con artist. Two days ago I canceled my contract with AHS. I finally realized I was dealing with false security and was going to continue to pay for ALL future repairs. When I called to cancel, they told the department that handled cancellations wasn't answering the phone and they would call me back. I fussed and finally got a person in the cancellation department. I wish I had read all the American Home Shield complaints a lot sooner.

Bad service
On February 24, 2010, we put in a claim after checking our pamphlet from AHS regarding our dryer. Our washer and dryer are from Fisher & Paykel, we purchased them in 2006 due to thier high consumer rating. We have had our warranty since that time as well, as that is when we purchase this home.

Our dryer is a top loading (very unique) with stainless steel tub. Unfortunely, the Plastic top at the hinge broke, we called it in and repair man came out and took our $60 and said he had to order the part. In the meantime, I have had to do laundry. We called two weeks later and was again told the part was on order.

We received a survey from AHS and I stated I was not satisfied as the repairs were still outstanding. When my husband called today - he was told they declined on the 10th. We have had not notice. When he asked why, they stated the dry top is cosmetic. It will not lock as it tries to do and since had caused crack damage to the outside housing.

Have you ever heard of a dryer door being cosmetic? I did not know you could use one without a door??? Who knew. We have since put in a complaint with their department, but you can not deal with the 800# - they gave us a different number to be available 5 days a week till 7pm - but today at 3pm they were not there and would not allow a message to be left.

I have been their customer for over 8 years and all I have is complaint after complaint
Their service is horrible. They charge you a co-pay even if they don't fix the problem. I wish I could be employed by them. No matter what terrible job you do, you get paid. I do not recommend them at all. I have been a customer for over 8 years and all I have is complaint after complaint. I prefer calling someone outside their services and pay them. At least, I don't have to pay unless the work is done and up to standards.

To this date, I have not received any reimbursement
Until recently, I was very satisfied with the services rendered through American Home Shield. However, when I put in a request for a work order to check my hot water heater, the amount of time it took for a company to contact me and address the order extended from April 28 to June 3(which is date that my policy was cancelled.) When the company came to the house, they quoted an overcharged price to install the hot water heater and change the hoses given the fact that American Home Shield offered to pay for the hot water heater. After going to Lowes and speaking to one of their knowledgeable staff, he showed me how easy it was to install the hot water heater and hoses without having to change any of my hardware. I realized that the cost for the company to install the water heater was definitely over priced. As a result, I purchased and installed the water heater myself. After consulting with one of the representative with American Home Shield, he assured me that they would reimburse me for purchasing the hot water heater. To this date, I have not received any reimbursement. This is not my only complaint but rather another complaint concerning the companies that American Home Shield authorize contracts with to assist their customers. Some of these companies are very unprofessional. For instance, a worker from a company came to my house to fix my air conditioning unit. As a result, the worker did not fix the air conditioning unit but rather caused more damage to my air conditioning unit. Resulting in requesting other work orders to fix the problem. In conclusion to these problems, American Home Shield dropped my insurance policy refusing to renew it. It's amazing how some insurance companies can decipher which policies they will renew and while others they can drop with no warning or prior notificaton of a cancellation date.

Unable to deliver service
We bought the American Home Shield - home warranty with complete coverage hoping that we could use it if anything goes wrong in the home. Unfortunately as much as they are greedy in signing the contract and selling the warranty, we realise today it is worthless.
We recently had some issue with plumbing and we were assigned a contractor - Right Away Services and all they did is come in and collect the initial service and get away without doing anything. The same thing happened when we had a heater issue and they sent - Metropolitan Heating and Air Conditioning. Later, we had to pay other contractor to come in get it fixed. My mail is to alert homeowners out there that they should be either a law to prevent consumer abusal or stop buying warranties from these companies. They are just fooling the people.

Stay away from them
AHS claims code violaitons or improper installation to avoid paying for replacement items or expensive repairs. Before giving their contractors "the additional costs" or cutting your losses, contact your own contractors for an estimate and ask them to verify or discredit the AHS contractor's claims of code violations or improper installation. Take this information and file a complaint with the BBB and your attorney general website. AHS does respond back to them and it gives you a mediator to work through to get your satisfaction. Plus it changes their BBB rating if everyone complains forcing them to eventually honor their contracts without the hassle.

Rip off
Major rip off, for a simple pluming problem contacted AHS they send a tech out to help me. The tech came out take a look at it, didn’t fix the problem and said it is "structural" and he needs to open the dry wall to see if there is underground leak or not, after doing that he didn’t see any leak left the wall open and never came back to fix the pluming problem or close thedry wall. After many calls to AHS the dry wall is still open. The “”Structural plumbing” problem was fixed by an independent Plummer for free it was just a lose house.

Terrible experience
I have had active accounts with them; multiple units for years. Recently, one of the heater blowers in a condo broke. They sent a tech; he didn't even bother to open the unit. He called AHS and submitted a verbal report that the unit was (a) installed wrong and (b)failed because the filters were not replaced. For this, I had to pay my share on the spot. No receipt, no report to me.

I obtained AHS permission and called a tech using the condo association referral. They came and confirmed that's how all other heaters were installed; and they showed me how the blower fan broke. It was a pure mechanical failure, thru wear-n-tear.

I will stay away from the minute details. But, the circus started with AHS not paying for the repair. They continued to maintain their position. They refused to write to me on their position, despite repeated requests.
I was upsent and took them to the court after months of pursuit. A grumpy, rude lawyer was sent to represent them. I had certificates from the repairing tech company to confirm that their position was wrong. Finally, they paid for the repair cost; nothing else, not even the court cost.

After two months, when the renewal came up, guess what they did? They just dropped me from future warranty service. I guess they expected me to meekly accept their one-sided judgment and not contest.

A classic example of service! Made me thrilled about paying them for several years with my trust; just in case I evere needed service they would stand by!!!
