We were residential customers of Amerigas for more than ten years. The last several years we choose a "Pre Pay" plan thinking we were getting the best price as the local Amerigas manager assured us. This year I decided to keep him honest and checked with other propane providers and found I could save nearly 20%. It's not unusual for competitors to offer initial lower pricing in order to gain you as a customer but I was assured that this was the price offered all "Pre Pay" customers. I dropped Amerigas.
What was the "best price" that Amerigas had given me in past years? As I watched the unit price rise year after year, I can only assume now that the best price Amerigas offered was far more than competitors and that Amerigas was padding their prices in the hope that I wouldn't bother checking the competition. Of course I had "faith" that Amerigas was dealing with honestly.
IT'S NOT JUST THE PRICING. Amerigas "Automatic Delivery" was far from automatic. One week before leaving for a two week winter vacation, I made several call to Amerigas requesting a delivery, indicating that I was low and leaving for two weeks. No delivery and we had a freeze up causing thousands of dollars of damage.
TRY TO GET THEM TO PICK UP YOUR TANKS WHEN YOU CANCEL. We have been waiting three months. Called the local Amerigas office and told it would take 8 to 12 weeks. Emailed the corporate offices and though they replied quickly and assured me the local Amerigas manager would contact me within 2 or 3 days, and that they would monitor the situation, neither the call came from the manager nor did corporate monitor anything. Why would it take three months and if three months than why not six months, why not a year?
