whorable store
I've been going to AJ for awhile now. I decided to get some new stuff. Purchased light fixture 750$, purchased sump 350$, purchased sump pump 140$ purchased installed of sump, drilling of tank, plumbing of sump, new substrate and rock work. Total was 1900$ on credit cards!!! Came back the day after and spent another 400 on power heads, heater and other odds and ends. Everything went ok with the install, the tank was thriving so on so forth. Current load out of my tank at this time was yellow tang, orange shoulder, hippo, sailfin, naso (none bigger then 6 inches) mandarin, red spot goby, clarkii, maroon and yellow tail damsel. I get a call from AJ because they got a Achilles Tang in. I went in the store to check this fish out and he is wiry, I mean hyper. He must have jumped 2 feet in the air out of the bucket. I started asking my questions. Do you think he will do fine in my tank. Answer "Yes no problem since we just redid the rock work (big stupid grin from AJ), "Should I quarantine this fish". No he will be fine. "Are you sure I should not quarantine this fish". "No no no he will be fine". ( knows I do not have a quarantine tank and would not buy the fish if he said yes to quarantine him. These are exact quotes my wife and Joe as my witness. Brought him home, dripped him for 2 hours, introduced him to the tank at night. Tuesday the Achilles comes out with ich, not just a little, entire body. Here it is a week later and I have lost the Achilles, mandarin, shrimp, etc etc. My orange shoulder is damn near dead and I'm sure the rest are to follow. I Called AJ. He laughed "Oh you wanted that fish so bad how could I tell you no". I asked about quarantine and you replied no. Asked you if you would put that fish in your personal tank without quarantine and you replied yes. Asked you why you told me during the tank setup that I should quarantine and you don't do so yourself. Got a stutter for a response. You stated on the phone that if I did my research I would have known my tank was over crowded. I stated I know how big the tangs get but as of right now it is now over crowded and if he felt that way then why would he sell a fish that he knows would die. Asked how hard the Achilles were to take care of and you mentioned the powder blues were much more difficult. After 8 hours of research I have found that the powder blues are a walk in the park in comparision and that the Achilles should not be kept with ANY other tangs unless in a super large aquarium. Then during this conversation he states "I did not realize that I should have sat someone so ignorant down for an hour and explained everything". I asked simple questions requiring simple answers, but nothing too difficult. As far as ignorance to the hobby I don't claim to know everything but I had the basics down to keep a reef growing. AJ exclamed "But your tank was all jacked up before you came to me, substandard lighting, substandard substrate, and running a cannister filter so you had nitrates". I exclaimed "I have been running this setup since January, yes pc's are not high end lighting and yes I use crushed coral. It is your opinion that these are substandard considering that before all this upgraded stuff everything in my tank was growing just fine and nothing was dying. People run canisters in reefs (yes, some do), some run crushed coral in reefs, (another shocker) and a lot of folks run PC's in reefs, done so for years. In the end I will not be visiting this store anymore since I am utterly disgusted at the poor advice I received which is costing me hundreds $$$. I had very healthy meaty fish (as commented by AJ, could of been BS though) prior to this incident. I trusted your opinion on everything so that is probably my fault for thinking you had all the knowledge I would need. Don't worry, I will not be in your store asking any other questions and I hope your little signs make you feel better about just wanting my hard earned dollars. Especially after spending over 2g's there.
