Overheated and self-destructed
On Saturday August 24, 2010, my iPhone 3GS [bought at the Apple Store Louvre in Paris in February 2010] crashed during a day-hike near Paris. The screen went completely blank and the plastic back of the phone became almost too hot to touch. I estimate that the temperature must have reached at least 130 degreees Fahrenheit, if not more. I was afraid the iPhone would explode or melt, so I put it in the bottom of my backpack until I got home.

All the contents were lost: all the pictures, all the files, all the contents of the address book--everything.

The next day, Apple replaced the iPhone at no cost--but with no explanation whatsoever of what went wrong. Worse, although the original phone was guaranteed for one year--until February 2011--the replacement phone was only guaranteed for three months--until November, 2010. I find it odd and disconcerting that Apple guaranteed my first iPhone for one full year, whereas they only guaranteed my second iPhone for three months. I can only surmise that Steve Jobs himself and his management don't seem to have much confidence in the quality of the products they are selling, otherwise Apple would guarantee my replacement iPhone for one year or would at least have extended the warranty through February 2011.

I later ran some research and discovered something astonishing: fully 26% of all iPhones break or fail during the first two years! Not only that: according to the article I found [URL below] iPhones kept longer than standard two-year carrier contract fail at a higher rate...Three-year-old iPhones are predicted to sport a failure rate of 35 to 40 percent. Article here, from June 2010:

It's my own view that the Apple engineers have overloaded these iPhones with so many bells and whistles, gadgets and geegaws that it's easy for something to go wrong and then the damn thing overheats and you think it's going to explode or melt down right in your hand.

My research also led me to discover that, a year or so ago, there were press accounts of six French iPhone owners reporting spontaneous self-destruction of Apple iPhones that led to a government investigation. Article:

Flash player
I don't understand why apple allows netflix mobile to be one of it's free apps and yet apple won't allow flash player to be downloaded onto it's iPhone devise. I can't play movies or even view movie trailers because flash player isn't allowed. The phone is expensive and the service is expensive and yet two major drawbackS of the phone are no light/flash for camera. And no real choice to watch movies or shows etc... It's too late for them to add a flash for camera but it's not too late for them to enable flash player. Why apple? Why?
