Incompetence with FA and Collections
Ashford University is coming after me with collectors as well. Here is my story:
graduated from Ashford University on July 28th, 2010. On August 5th, 2010 the term ended. Instead of graduating me, the school dropped me. I got a letter to this effect and sent them an email telling them they had made a mistake. I graduated. When I did graduate, my student account was clear. The school had received a payment from my student loans that paid off the last term and gave me a stipend amount. The school had sent me the stipend. Suddenly, after I had the school correct the error with the drop, the financial aid changed. The student services corrected my status from drop to graduate, but they never bothered to notate that it was their error. My account essentially got audited like a dropped student’s account would. They took away the money that they had paid my last term and given me a stipend with. They sent it back to Sallie Mae. This should never have been done. Now, they have been trying to collect that money from me. They sent me a stipend, paid my student loans, then refunded money to Sallie Mae that had already been credited to me (and that I have to pay back when done with school). Now they want me to pay that same money doubly to them. They are trying to collect on their error.
Also, when I called Sallie Mae, the agent told me that they had never received a complete, correctly filled out request for the money back from the school. They said they had received only one partially filled out request and had sent the school an email requesting they re-fill out the paperwork in order to get the refund from Sallie Mae. The school never did respond after that. I told my financial aid advisor this, and never heard a peep from the school after that. Now, suddenly they are sending demand emails. I do not owe them this money. Sallie Mae has said they have not received another request from the school, the school straight up lied to me and said they did send another. They are the ones that made the mistake in sending back money that they had been issued for my last term. They need to eat the costs themselves. Not try to collect from me when I will already be paying that money back to Sallie Mae and the federal government.
LET'S ALL STOP SAYING "SHOULD FILE CLASS ACTION" and DO IT! I HAVE AN ATTORNEY WORKING ON MY BEHALF...I THINK HE WOULD TAKE ON CLASS ACTION IF OTHERS WOULD LIKE! LET ME KNOW!! COMMENT BACK AND I WILL BOOKMARK THIS AND ADD YOU TO A LIST WITH YOUR COMPLAINT TO TAKE TO MY ATTORNEY!

No Compassion for student issues
I have been attending Ashford University since July of 2009. My problem, however, is with my most recent class (SCI 207) with instructor Jeff K. My problem is th that I have been having internet problems and this had caused two of my papers to be late. Well, he won't accept them "not even if it is a minute late" It's not that I didn't do my homework it is just that I couldn't send it to them. Well he gave me a zero and my final grade was a 62. I don't know if that is passing or failing. I am so mad with this school and teacher right now. Why be like that? All my assignments have been off for this class and he made late debductions accordingly for them. 10% for the first day, 20% for second and 30% for the third day (final grade before a zero) but my paper was graded almost immediately after 11:59 pm. Now my daughter had the same class and turned her papaer in 3 days late. I hate how all the teachers can make up their own rules.

Harassing Debt Collector
I attended a couple of classes about 4 years ago. They did not explain the program very well and the online classes were too dificult for me to work full time and keep up with. I dropped out then they started billing me for all sorts of things. I had a student loan and grant, they took the grant money but returned all the studen loan money and sent collection agencies after me, one right after the other. I tried to get them to explain the charges, they never did, I called them they said I had to work through the collection agency. I tried without any answer from them either. They could not validate the charges. I haven't head from them for over two years, all the suden Ashford collections department started calling me, at my old job, at home several times a day etc. I thought this debt was taken care of. They continue to harrass me daily. I can't get them to explain the charges or to stop harrassing me. This is a terrible on-line school. The worse experience of my life.

Ashford University - Student Beware
I would not recommend Ashford University to anyone. I was recently a student in their online program and it was a royal nightmare from start to finish. The enrollment advisor was really nice and explained everything. I should have been weary from the beginning though. I told them I already had a previous Bachelors Degree from University of Phoenix but that I was choosing to start fresh with a new degree program and that while I was transferring in some credits from other schools I would not be transferring my credits from UOP. They told me that because of this I would have to be put on academic probation from the start. Not letting this deter me I continued to get settled in and filed for my financial aid. This was yet another nightmare, cause not only was I on financial aid but I was also getting MYCAA because I'm a military spouse. It took almost two months for my financial aid to hit my account and then just to get the money I was owed because of their stupid 30/70 policy I was forced to file a hardship to get my money. To make matters worse I didn't receive all I should have cause MYCAA was taking forever to pay them so my financial aid was covering more than it should have. Well in the meantime I started having a lot of issues causing havoc with my grades. My daughter got really ill and I had some other personal issues. I was forced to drop two classes and apparently a dropped class equals an F regardless of when your drop. It put me below GPA for probation and I was dismissed. I filed to get back in and was accepted, then my grandmother got ill and I had to go be with her and was forced to drop again, yet again being dismissed. All this because of family illnesses and stupid policies cause I chose to not transfer UOP credits in. Well I have sinced switched schools and am much happier. However MYCAA has finally started paying the school for past classes and there is now access money sitting on my Ashford account. When calling to see when I could get it I was told it would take 45 days for them to just decided if I would get it or it would be sent back to Sallie Mae (hello this wasn't even Sallie Mae money, it was DOD money from the MYCAA program and should come to me). The school just overall sucks. You can't get any answers you need, and they seem to change policies on a whim. Students beware...

Financial Aid Department
I was enrolled at Ashford University for about 1 1/2 and everything was going great. However, around June. 2009 the Financial Aid Department began to go downhill. I was told my financial aid was being processed and would be awarded within two weeks. Then two weeks later I was advised the same things. It was determined there was a mistake on their end and this issue would be resolved immediately. The funds were posted to my account and I received a refund. Only to find out three weeks later the refund was a mistake and there was nothing that could be done to resolve it at AU. I continued with 2 more classes. Unfortunately, I now have a past due account with the school in excess of $11, 000 because the financial aid was not processed properly, so I am obligated to pay the balance. This is really annoying only 8 classes before I receive my degree only now back to ground zero. Needless to say, I cannot get a transcript.

I had been going to Ashford University for almost a year . When I ended up owning money for college.From the beganing it was always a fight with them to get my financial aid . They knew that I'm on SSI and had limited income.They had even told me to go to a local church and beg for the money . I have also researched and found where arrangements have been made with other students where they were able to receive their books prior to loans being disbursed and their account was settled when everything was finalized.But for some reason this service was unavailable to me. So I had started to go to my classes because if iI did not start going I would owe for my loans and pell grant. Not knowing where or how I was going to come up with money for my books. But then I started my courses
at Ashford University, borrowing money for my books.But then my assignments for my first course had suddenly came up missing [which I know that I had turned it in cuz I'm really scared of defaulting on my loans], causing me to fail the course using up more of my money from my loans and aid. This last course my thesis which had three parts to it, they were all turned with the same file format, the first two part was readable but then the last part some how was in the wrong file format causing me to fail the course, again causing more of my loans and aid to be eating up. So then I was place on academic probation, So I finally that all straighting around, now I owe 1500.00 and they will not allow me to come back to college with out paying that back . Which I have have finicial aid left.
and I can not get my transcripts until I pay that 1500.00 back.so now i'm stuck . Does anyone have any ideas to resolve my dilemma?

Complaint
Ashford University is very disorganized when it comes to record keeping and they treat students as kids . In a college and especially nowadays a competitive market of institutions students should be treated as clients and advisors as professionals.
I am attending Ashford University and am stuck there ; I need an education . My records and financial aid is all messed up from different financial advisors doing different things and giving different advise. I took one program called "smart track" that was suppose to speed me up into the Master degree program and it held me back because of calendar dates. When I contacted my academic advisor all she said was " you agree'd and I told you so ".
My Iowa student loans is contacting me to pay my loans thinking I am out of school according to their records and I am still in school . Ashford has me graduated from the BA program on DEC 12, Dec 14 and FEB 22. And has me entering the Master degree program on Jan 12 and March 2 and I took one class and am locked out of an (online class) because they are confused because of their record keeping.
Like I said I am stuck here because I do not hear from advisors my financial money is here someplace ? It is difficult to transfer . I need the degree. I am willing to enter a class action suit while I am here to get some help not revenge.

No compassion
The Ashford University On-Line program is $1062.00 a class, I am on my 5th class, I am getting financial aide, pell grants and student loans, But yet my pell grant covers no books. It is costing me an additional $130.00 a class for the books plus express mail at $41.00, not to mention the $60.00 a month for my sprint stick. I will say it will cost me $57, 000 dollars and four years of my life to achieve a degree that doesn't even pay $15, 000.00 a year. So with this being said "what's the point". The instructors will not let you make up work if you are in the hospital, they just lock you out of the assignments equaling a zero, that they will not let you resubmit.
12 x 60=$720.00 a year for internet service.
1062 x 10 classes =1$10, 620 a year to attend classes that are five weeks long.
999 x 1= 999.00 for technology fee
$410.00 in express mail fee for over-nighting your books for 10 classes
1300.00 for 10 classes of books
10, 620 + 720 + 999 + 410+ 1300= $14, 099.00 a year for 4 years =$56, 376 for degree in a field that only pays $15, 000 a year = Income of $60, 000 for 4 years - $56, 376= $3624.00 I will clear not counting the taxes my employer will with-hold which is 1/3 of that= WHAT WAS I THINKING? AND HOW DESPERATE WAS I?
The Grant should be used for the books as well as the classes.
But I will give credit where credit is due: My advisory team was so polite.

Fly by Night Operation
I just wanted to give everyone a heads up on AU. Now I have never gone to this school, but my wife sent in for some info a while back (she is an attorney and is looking to get some human resources background, she contacted a bunch of places on a whim and decided no.) and they literally have not stopped calling. That is no big deal to us, we are busy and we usually just ignore stuff like this. Anyways...tonight I actually took one of the calls, and told them we were not interested. The smarmy jerk on the other end said that he will not stop calling until he hears it out of her mouth!!
What the...!?!?!!?
So the conversation devolved into name calling, I hung up and he actually called back, claiming that I was holding my wife back from making $80, 000 - 90, 000 a year!! My complaint here is not the call, obviously this admissions councelor is an idiot. People should be wary of anything that has this hard a sell. I am university educated from a top rate public university (U of Wisconsin-Madison) and I am pretty sure that even they would not and could not guarantee that people are going to make $80, 000 coming out of there. I mean this sales job was somewhere between Cutco knives and Kirb vacuum cleaners...Buyer Beware!!!

Financial Aid Department
This school's financial aid department sucks! They keep your financial aid check for a total of 14 weeks! I didn't even recieve one of my checks and when I called to complain (3 times!!) I never recieved the promised email to stop the check! I want my financial aid money!!!
