Never again. No way. Beware.
I had my first visit today.
Upon arrival, I used the rest room. Their was urine on the floor and all over the toilet seat. I'm a female, so I could not just lift the seat and pee! First I thought - ok, maybe somebody, perhaps elderly just did it and staff did not know, but there were no paper towels in the dispenser, no soap in the dispenser and the sink was full of hair. All I could think was that if the bathroom could be this nasty, is it safe for these people to be in my mouth?
With caution, I proceeded with the visit. First I'll say that the reason I chose Aspen was from the TV commercials - I have horrible teeth and have since I was a child and needed a dentist that could handle it.
It's been just over 2 years since I've seen a dentist and in those 2 years I have lost 4 fillings and have new cavities. I also had a tooth which was previously filled that is killing me.
So, first they did x-rays (18 of them) which was uneventful and then the dentist came in. He spent less than 5 minutes doing a "full exam" of my teeth. Trust me, I've had a LOT of dental work and 5 minutes is in no way going to be enough to do a full exam of my teeth.
He rattled off his findings to the tech. who wrote everything down and what he found was that I needed 1 filling and 1 crown. Ok - I had 4fillings totally missing before getting there, but he didn't see ANY of those. Now, where not talking little fillings - these are back molars and the holes are big enough to see with the eye, let alone x-rays, of which they took 18. But he totally missed them telling me I needed 1 filling on what appears to me to be a good tooth and a crown, which is on the only perfect tooth I have.
He asked me which tooth hurt and I showed him. He said he had no idea what was wrong, but it could not be saved; it had to be extracted. I questioned him - how can you know it needs to be extracted, if you dont know whats wrong? He said - because its probably fractured on the inside and x-rays wont show that.
I'm thinking - ok, isn't that what x-rays are supposed to show????? At that point, I decided I did NOT want my dental care here, but since the tooth was killing me I was hoping they could at least fix it and I was ok with it being pulled. I let thedentist know that and he said the extraction would be scheduled at check-out.
After that - the hygenist came in and checked my gums and told me they were receding, which I already knew. She recommended a special medical toothpaste that I could buy at the front desk. I asked her how much it was and she said she wasn't sure, but they would tell me upon check out.
So at that point I left. I got to the desk and the office manager showed me the print out of my "summary" which included 1 filling and 1 crown (Still - the 4 missingfillings and tooth that was killing me was still not addressed). I asked her for the price of the special toothpaste and she said she never heard of it. Ok - I wanted out of there and was not going to buy it anyway. I told her thedentist agreed to do an extraction on my painful tooth. According to her, there was nothing in my summary that stated that. She went back, talked with him, then came up front and told meit had to be done by their oral surgeon who rotates between offices and the first available appt. was 6 weeks away.
NO WAY was I waiting 6 more weeks to get this done. I asked her if I could get it done in one of their other offices and she said yes. They had an appt. in an office an hour away for next Thursday. It being 8 days away, I thought I could tolerate it until then. I asked her to make the appt. and she said she could not unless I paid for the extraction now. I was floored. I told her - I have insurance and she said, I know but you are responsible for paying the 20% your insurance doesn't cover before the procedure can be scheduled. I was like WTF. Now, i know a lot of doctors want the balance due at the time of service, but not 8 days in advance. I explained that I knew todays exam would be covered by insurance, so I did not bring my check book and had no ability to pay today, but would pay next week when I got to the other office and she refused to schedule the appt., I got pissed and walked out.
My impression - a RIP OFF - and nothing more. This dentist totally overlooked all my missing fillings, wanted to fill and crown teeth that were perfect and then told me that he needed to pull my tooth because it couldn't be saved even though he did not know why it hurt. I'd rather have my kids fixmy teeth than this place. Never again. No way. Beware.
I should have walked out after seeing the bathroom. What a nightmare.

Deep Cleaning Scam
I went to aspen dental with my "free x-rays and cleaning" coupon...I did get my x-rays, but they said they could *not* clean my teeth because I needed a "deep cleaning" procedure that would cost over $700 (the procedure sounded lengthy and painful, so I never even considered it).
There other costs were very high, so I ended up at another dental office anyways. I was actually stupid enough to let them "fix" one of my teeth...they only did half of a root canal and charged me over $700 for that, and never put a crown or anything on the tooth.
2 months later my daughter who is only 23 years old went to aspen in another city, and they claimed that she could not have her teeth cleaned either...guess what?, she needed the "deep cleaning" procedure at over $700 (funny, she had her teeth cleaned less than a year before that at another regular dental office).
Not only is Aspen Dental overpriced (despite their commercials which make you feel otherwise...they present themselves as "affordable" and definitely are not), but I think they have a scam going for this "deep cleaning" procedure. This is a very lengthy procedure that involves using numbing agents and pulling the gums away from your teeth and scraping the teeth below the gums. I do not believe that many people would need such a procedure and it is just another way that Aspen Dental is trying to rip off the consumer.
DO NOT GO TO ASPEN DENTAL, go anywhere else...but not there.

Inferior Work
I got dentures from Aspen Dental. FOOLISHLY agreed to upgrade my package to the "best" dentures and now I am afraid I'm stuck. Not only do they fit poorly but the doctor doesn't seem to even know how to fix the fit. I'm on my second one and it really isn't any better.

Lied to take money
Aspen dental is the worst dentist I've ever been to totally lied to me to get my cash of 2, 000.00 and then did'nt finish the job stayed in pain until I got a new dentist now my smile is a smile Yeah for real dentist check there credentials before doing anything to your mouth like check to see if they have a college degree because if your getting partials they'll be some kind of imitation goop that dries and causes your gum's nothing but pain . There moving into these cities fast like Keizer, Oregon to take peoplesmoney if you go to a Dr.Charles hartman you better have him check your eyes because he does't know anything about teeth!{GUARANTEED}

unsatisfactory work
Had several thousand dollars of dental work done. One of those procedures was a root canal and crown. From day one it gave me problems. I have never been able to eat on that side of my mouth since. I can barely touch my face where the tooth is located. Every few months my face swell and they would put me on antibiotics, and bring me back ex-ray it and say it just needed adjustment. After doing this five different times, I went to another dentist and had it ex-rayed. Turns out they only did half of the root canal. They did not go all the way to the end of the root. Now I have to go to a specialist to have it finished and will cost me more than the original work cost. I can not even get a call back from Aspen"s office manager.

poorly treated client

poor customer service
This letter is in regards to my recent visit at Aspen dental, McKinley Parkway Blasdell, N.Y. 14219. At my first visit to aspen dental I had made the appointment for a routine cleaning. When I arrived I was asked to fill out paperwork and have a seat and wait to be called. I waited at least 15 minutes to be called. I was finally called; they took me in back to get x-rays. They had to have taken 25 x-rays which I though would be good considering that I hadn’t been to the dentist in a while. After my x-rays were taken, I was told to have a seat in the waiting room again and they would call me back to see the dentist. Once again it had to have at least been 15 minutes before they called me back. I went back to have a seat in the dental chair, the dentist came in and informed of what she thought I should have done. I was unsure about the healthiness of my teeth and wasn’t sure if I would need dentures. She rudely told me that dentures were out of the question. My teeth were too healthy for that. As I was waiting for the dentist I looked around and saw the filth around me, there was a film of something on the floor in all the corners and there were crumbs and all kinds of nastiness all around the chair I was sitting in. I could have done without the rudeness. After that I was swept away to the office managers office where I had to discuss payment options and pricing with him. He informed me of what the cost of what I needed done. The prices were way too high compared to any charges that I saw on in the booklet that I was given by our Gaurdian rep so I questioned him. He told me the prices were correct and that would be what I would have to pay if I wanted the work done. I left the office at least 2 hours later and had no cleaning done. The first visit is a consultation; I had to reschedule an appointment to have my teeth cleaned. I was very upset when I left. The office manager made me feel like I was poor and had no means to pay for the work I needed. I was also disgusted by the overall cleanliness of the place. It was very poor. I decided I would not go back there. After I got home and thought about it I decided to call Gaurdian and ask if the charges were correct. When I spoke with the rep, we soon found out that the prices were not correct and I faxed over a copy of my estimate. I didn’t hear anything for a long time, at least a month or maybe 2. I then received a letter stating that they needed more info. I was so aggravated by then I did nothing and figured I would pay full price somewhere else just to have piece of mind.
Then at the end of January my partial broke and I needed a new one asap as the break was in the front and could be seen when I smiled. I called all around before I actually called Aspen because of the poor service I received the first time I was there. However, they were the only ones in the area that could fix my partial while I waited so I decided I would give them another chance. Well, I was wrong. When I got there it was the same thing, had to fill out paperwork, then wait to be called. Waited around 15 minutes before I was called, the girl wanted to take more x-rays. I had just had 25 taken at the end of October, so I declined. She then took me to the dental chair and took my partial. She came back after a short while and informed me the partial could be temporarily fixed but I would have to order a new one. I thought that might be the case because my old one was very old. So I had to talk with the office manager again. But before I talked to him I had to have another seat in the waiting room to be called. He came and got me probably 15 minutes later. He informed me of the pricing again and I told him that I called the ins. Co the last time and that he may have put in the wrong codes because the price quotes were too high. He got very nasty at that point and stated that the prices were correct and that was what I would have to pay if I wanted them to fix my mouth. I then asked him if he could call the ins co. to straiten out this misunderstanding in which he said yes. But he wasn’t going to call, he would have the receptionist call. Well, he left the room for maybe 2 minutes, came back in and said that she had called and the prices were confirmed. They were correct. I had no other choice but to order my new partial and spend well over $800.00 by the time he was finished. The partial was $756.00 and then I had to add a cleaning and fluoride treatment, by the time he was finished, the total bill was almost $900.00. So then came the point where I had to have my old partial fixed so I had something to wear in between. He was going to charge me $100.00 for that. I declined and said I would wear it like it was until my new one was finished. He then said he could do me a favor and only charge me $29.00 since I ordered my new one. I agreed and they took it away to fix it. Then after that came the discussion about payment. He said I needed to pay for ½ at that time. I said I didn’t have that much money with me at that time and I wanted to pay cash, I didn’t want to charge it. He then tried to get me signed up for care credit and some other form of credit. I declined. I wanted to pay cash. So then he really made me feel poor, like I didn’t have any money and I couldn’t pay the bill. But after a while he agreed that I could bring the deposit back in with me when I had my teeth cleaning at my next visit. Then after that I had to have a seat in the waiting room and wait again. They finally came back out and got me and took me to the dentist chair again. They had to take impressions for my new partial. I waited there forever before they came in. As I was waiting I started to look around and again the dirt, film in the corners, I looked up a little farther towards the top of the molding and there was a splatter mark that looked an awful lot like a blood splatter. Then I looked around more and discovered a huge blood splatter have way up the wall in front of me. I was disgusted. I wanted to leave on the spot but I needed by impression for my new partial so I stayed. They took the impressions and then finally I was finished. They took me out to the reception desk where my next appointment was to be made. I asked then if all appointments take as long as the last two did and she said no, it took so long this time because I had the old partial fixed. (That only took 45 minutes) My appointment was at 3:30pm and I didn’t leave there until 6:05pm. Way too long if you ask me for an appointment to last.
I was so disgusted at the cleanliness of this place that I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Not to mention the way I was treated. That office manager has no bedside manner and should not be in the position he is in. He should want to help their clients not make them feel the way they made me feel. The Dr. that I saw that day was very nice and so was the nurse assistant.
This was on Wednesday. I waited until Monday and by then I had gotten a chance to read up on Aspen and I was horrified at some of the stories that are out there. I called immediately and cancelled my partial and my next appointment. I will never go back there or to any other Aspen Dental location. I am not the only one at my work that has had bad experiences with them and just not that office. There are worse Aspen’s out there.
Aspen should be fined or closed. For such a big company, they have no customer service all the way around.

What a joke of a con job
I went to Aspen Dental for a cleaning. They claimed to be giving free xrays and exam.
When I saw the dentist, she claimed I needed 10 (ten) crowns at $900 per crown. Also, I needed new upper and lower partial dentures, and scaling procedures. I asked if I had any cavities and the dentist replied "I don't see any cavities". I explained that nothing was wrong with my current upper and lower partials. She replied, "they are too old after eight years." I asked what was wrong with the four crowns I already had. She replied, "they have to go". She said my "gums bled" when she examined me. When flossing or brushing, I've never had bleeding. Then I was escorted to the financial person to apply for a loan. What a joke!!! All I can say is: they prey on gray haired women...DON'T GO THERE, RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN. I hope I escaped by not making another appointment and I did not fill out application for loan. Somehow, I have a feeling they are going to try to get money for xrays, and con job exam that is advertised as free.

Service
I went in as a new patient for a cleaning. I moved to the area about a year and 1/2 ago and had not yet seen a dentist. I saw my last dentist every six months and had seen him in the month I moved. Aspen was in the network of my dental carrier and location was convienent. They took approximately 25 X-rays and then the dentist reviewed and took a look at my teeth. They said they could not clean my teeth that day, since they claimed I needed a deep cleaning and that they had to do the cleaning in sections. I then met with the "financical counselor" who presented a bill for $3500, after insurance it was $1500. Besides the deep cleaning, they choose to refill all of my fillings, flush out my gums, floride, coating for my gums, etc. After I spent 1/2 hours having her explain all the charges and eliminating them, repeatedly saying all I wanted was a cleaning, I got the bill down to $300 (after insurance). I scheduled the appointments. After considering all the services they tried to get me to do, I decided this was not a business I was going to support and cancelled. I will find a small local dentist without the fancy packaging.

failure to discolse information and charged for 1st visit
I went to Aspen dental because I was having a problem with a tooth and I had just joined a benefit plan and they were on the list. It was my first vistit there and and they had a sign in the window free exam and x-rays for new patients. The dentist looked at the tooth in question and took an xray and told me to go to an endodontist. To my shock I was charged $89.00! fo a 3 minute exam. I paid the vist not thinking because I was overwhelmed with the result and being a widow and having no dental insurance I knew this other dentist would be a large bill. However, I went back the next day to inquire as to why I was charged being a new patient . I was told it was because I had only 1 tooth looked at and not the entire mouth. I explained that I was NEVER informed that I could get my entire mouth examined for FREE and I had to pay for ONE tooth. They were more or like "too bad". Had I known, I would have had my entire mouth looked at. No proceedures were done on the tooth. I went to work and found out that my co-worker had the SAME tooth problem as I did, however hers was FREE because she was also a new patient and had her ENTIRE mouth x-rayed. I believe this is blatent "lack of FULL disclosure" and I should be refunded my visit price of $89.00 because had I known I would have opted for the FREE exam and they would have found the problem anyway with the exam. I informed them I would lodge a complain and go to the BBB and corporate office.
