Insurance
This is by far the worse insurance company I've ever had to deal with. I've had Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, Altius, Afflac and Assurant. With 3 children we have to have insurance. We had a $5000 maternity deductible and $10000 major medical deductible. After we met the $5000 maternity deductible we continued to receive bills unpaid by the insurance. We called Assurant and discovered that they considered the entire pregnancy and delivery ' high risk.' Because as the time of ultrasound 21 weeks, the umbilical cord was near the baby's neck! We had to obtain all medical records and highlight each Dr., technician, and nurses notes that reported everything to be normal. 11 appeals to review claims, 10 months, and several phone calls later, we are still fighting them every step of the way. One claim had to be reviewed 4 times before it was corrected! After much stress and headache we are down to the last $200 of $7000 they were going to make us pay in addition to the $5000 deductible.

Fraudulent credit card charges
I took out a temporary health insurance policy with Assurant health for the month of June.
I continued being billed $300 for the next 4 months till the month of October on my credit card. I never received a bill from Assurant and never authorized them to make these deductions from my credit card.
I got on the phone and talked to them clarifying that since I never signed up for more than a month of health insurance, had a separate insurance from the month of July and never used their health insurance that they should refund some of the amount. I was told that this is something they will clearly not do. As a consequence I had to cancel my credit card to prevent them from charging it.
If you sign up with Assurant health be prepared for similar treatment.

Beware
This company does not send me a bill even though I have not signed a statement saying it is ok not to do so. They did not notify me when they could not process a premium payment, and waited a couple days to write up a letter and send it to me in order to make sure my policy and grace period had both lapsed by the time it arrived. Since I had no notification of a problem there was no way to avoid it's lapse. After speaking to a representative who claimed she filed new credit card information and waived the "reinstatment fee" (they did this because I am also an insurance producer and called them out on this crap) I call again a couple days later to recheck on the account. They then informed me that they were "unable" to process the credit card (I called my bank, it works just fine) and gave me less than 2 hours to call back to try to reinstate the policy again. They also suggested I call my agent who was conveniently out of town. Overall this is disgusting and fraudulent conduct. If I as a member of the same industry cannot work out these issues with Assurant Health I do not see how a normal person with no knowledge of the insurance laws could possibly accomplish anything. And on a professional note it is this type of behavior that not only tarnishes the name of other insurance companies but makes me ashamed to be associated with these people.

Fraudsters and cheaters
I took out a short-term policy with Assurant because they had (on their website) great mental health coverage, that included Attention Deficit Disorder, which I thought that I had. I went to a psychiatrist to have an ADD screening. As soon as I start receiving care and medication for it, they changed their tune on everything.
My doctor had been trying to receive payment for my initial visit for 3 months, they said they wouldn't pay it because they believed it was a pre-existing condition, and they told my doctor that. When I called, they said that nothing to that effect was written in my file, and there were no notes that said anything about that.
So I went to my doctor and I paid her out of pocket (and had been paying for all of my prescriptions out of pocket as well) and I had never received a single benefit...EVER. I called again and I was assured that everything was fine and that they should file the claim again. It went back and forth for a couple of weeks.
They still denied the claim. When I called, they told me that 'they don't recognize ADD as a condition in adults' and that it was stated in my policy packet. With short term policies, they never even send you a paper packet in the mail. It's all on their website and you access it with your policy number. It's not secure, there isn't even a password to protect your policy information. There is no way for you to really know if you're looking at the same information that you were looking at when you originally took out the policy, so it's easy for them to change it and back it up. Call me paranoid, but it's a bit unsettling.
They also told me that if I had symptoms of ADD in the past, even if I wasn't diagnosed with it, that it would be viewed as pre-existing and it would not be covered.
I canceled my policy with them, but they made sure to take out their next payment before they canceled it, even though I asked them to cancel it before the date that they deducted it from my bank account.
I would be very cautious if you ever decide to take out a policy with them. Actually, I just wouldn't take one out. :)
