Disconnected in Houston
July 14, 2011
ongoing problems
I have had phone line issues for almost a year. Eight techs have come out and worked on the problem. One replaced everything for the outside phone box to and including the gateway. But the problem still is there. For the last two days I have been without home phone, internet and TV for hours on end. I lose connection in the middle of the night causing my home alarm to signal loss of dial tone waking my family. Techs have put me in contact with their supervisors who will not call me back when I leave messages. Calls to the Uverse support number only gets you voice prompts and the automated system detects a problem and schedules a tech. The tech start at square one and retrace all the last 6 or so techs have done. But since the tests they perform while they are there do not show an issue at the moment they leave without doing anything meaningful to correct the real line problem.
It seems that my home is serviced by a cable that is more than 30 years old and my connection to it is by a buried "bonded" connection. Two techs have said that the problem is the cable but it is very costly to dig up and install a " pedestal".
I have a lineman coming out this morning (the second in a week) to check the cable. Want to make a bet that the lineman does not find a problem!
Overall when everything is working Uverse is a little better than my past experience with Charter Cable. Dish HD has a much sharper picture. ATT picture freezes a lot and the boxes are very slow to respond to the remote control since a recent software upgrade.

3 No Shows
I called their agents 3 times to have a technician come out and hook up service at my new location. When they didn't show up I'd call back and they'd give me a new date/time for the tech to do the installation. Again no show. Called back yet again. Received yet another new date/time. You guessed it. No show. Goodby att!! Switching service to Comcast.

sales
Att Uverse salesman treated my 87 year old father agressively 4/25/11. Salesman in ATT issued parka, father in open door in shirt sleave on cold night. When I intervened by asking for supervisors name, was asked why I was being rude. Father became annoyed and explained because he was wasting his time.
Please do not give these jerks the time of day. If I may, I'd suggest that you keep one of your six year olds scocer participation medals handy and pass it along so that their delicate feelings are not hurt.

Horrible customer service, phone not working
uVerse was run in my neighborhood, and I was the first to sign up. Since November 1, 2010, I have had one major billing issue (they changed the price of my one year promotional offer by $50 per month). Horrible phone service, unless you enjoy having conversation bleed-through and static. Now the land line does not work at all. I have had no dial tone for 7 of 10 days, and have had 4 technicians come to the house. Each has a more inept story then the one before, and each leaves when the phone is working. I say this, but two came before their appointment, and before they tested the phone to check for static.
Do yourself a favor. AT&T may have over a century of experience in telephones, but this new technology must be too much for them to handle.
I am finding new providers of each of their services, immediately.

customer service
I have had att uverse for tv, internet and phone for just 3 months. I have had to call twice to get internet access restored. Both times their automated system offers to run a diagnostic test and informs me that there are service issues in my area and don't bother talking to an agent as they won't be able to help you. The first time I waited 2 days for internet access to be restored, only to discover that wasn't the issue at all. The second time of course I ignored the advice and talked to an agent who was able to get my wifi connection to work. Now setting aside the fact that I have now called the customer service two times more than I ever had to contact my prior internet provider, I find it unbelievable that a major company can't fix their automated system. The customer service rep acknowledged that there are issues with the automated system. I could a small company having to accept a broken automated system but ATT is just trying to get out of helping people. Also, EVERY TIME you call with any question, they are experienced an unusually high volume of calls and one must wait more than 10 minutes to speak to a representative. It can't always be unusually high, they're just hoping you'll go away. Of course, I will be going away, just as soon as my uverse contract is up.

service
Watch out for their bait and switch...Rep came to MY door and told me he could offer uverse/interent cheaper than my cable company. Sat down with me and offered me an ATT service agreement that showed a price without promotion and a promo price..Of course the promo price was supposed to be the price for 12 months while th price without promo is for 6 months(as it shows on the bill i recieved). Tried to call ATT numerous time and received the run around saying they don't employ the person who provided me the offer(well, then how did I end up with ATT uverse)...and/or that he must work out of an ATT authorized outlet...See where I am going..SO it's a bait and switch because they have no promo for the promo price...f'er's I guessI have to file a complaint with someone but not sure at this time with who...

Poor picture quality
A very professional and efficient technician installed ATT Uverse TV, Internet and Phone service with the U300 package. I used to have Dish network and comcast cable services at the same time (prior to Uverse). It was exactly 1 week now and everytime I turn my TV on, the Uverse HD channels look likeDish Network's standard definition channels. Uverse does not even come close to the picture quality of Dish satellite. I made the mistake of cancelling both my Dish Network and Comcast cable (for the Asian channels). Very poor picture qualities. I am wondering whether the set top box (Total DVR, ATT calls it) is REALLY AN HD RECEIVER or just an enhanced definition one. Also, I noticed that their connectivity to the 3 TVs (1HD and 2 SDs) is via ethernet cables. My family and I are not happy at all and I feel I was misled to believe ATT provides better viewing experience. I dread the time when I am going to call ATT to cancel the TV service and be slapped with a hefty early termination fee . So think twice before getting this service. The music channels are mediocre too.

Terrible Customer Server & Support
My router quite Friday night. No phone, no Internet.
Called Saturday morning. Recording tested the line, made appointment for Saturday between 8am and 8pm
Nobody showed up or called. Called Saturday night, recording made appointment for Sunda 8am to 8pm.
I found an ATT by accident. The guy had my address but no idea what the problem was. He tested the OUTSIDE line and said everything OK. Cannot test inside.
Called again. They tell me they'll send an INSIDE technician Monday betwee 4 and 8pm.
This is INCOMPETENT handling of a technical call, and in the end (IF they fix it) without phone for 3 DAYS !!!

Misleading Promotion
AT&T cellular representative offered a bundled package which would include cell phone bundled Uverse (HDTV, land telephone and internet)
for $60/month less than we were currently paying for the services. We could have a 30 day trial with no contract and a money back guarantee.
We signed up and had Uverse installed, Then we found out the cell phone was not part of the deal. The Uverse HDTV picture was not as good as Cox cable which we had prior to trying Uverse. The day after Uverse installed, wireless didn't work, e-mail didn't work and our fax machine would not send or receive faxes. Countless hours on the telephone with ATT and lot of empty promises of when things would be fixed or would not be fixed. Finally after a week of haggling ATT got some things working. E-mail I finally figured out how to fix.
After that we decided to go back to Cox Cable and back to ATT land line and DSL (Internet). We needed to get back to exactly where we were before joining the class action suit against ATT/Uverse.
Then we experience two more weeks of hell trying to get back to where we were. Again countless hours on the telephone, listining to recorded messages, repeating names, pin numbers, address, problem. Again empty promises of when services would be re-instated, when technitions would be schedule. Finally got back ATT land telephone and DSL.
Cox cable for no charge came out and straightened out the re-arranged co-axial cable mess ATT had left behine and got me back on Cox cable.
Be carefull when you decide to change from services you are basically satisfied with in order to save a buck. Get the price of every nut and bolt and all fees and taxes if possible. Also, consider companies that have local customer support office. ATT's installers may be local, but all customer help is long distance with 800 numbers and lots of hassle, lots of sweet "I'm so sorry talk" and very slow action.

Complete ripoff
Whatever you do - DO NOT SIGN UP FOR UVERSE. I am a deeply experienced computer user - I have been a user since the mainframes of the late 1960's and have run a computer company and written software for sale. I changed from ATT DSL to ATT UVerse to get faster service and this is a COMPLETE DISASTER. Unless you want to use their clunky webmail for your email and forgo your client email program (such as Outlook) then you are out of luck. There are online instructions to set it up and I guarantee that will not work. Then you try to call tech support - at LEAST a half hour to talk to someone and you will be informed that you will be charged, through CONNECTEC, to fix anything with a third party software issue. Guess what? My email worked fine this morning - I could send and receive email. Now it will absolutely NOT send email. If I want that fixed, then I get dinged for $129. They call this a "service"??? OH, and the much-vaunted increased speed? Count on getting about one TENTH the speed of DSL if you are lucky. This is a complete and absolute disaster. If you go through with this, you will have nothing but misery - so do NOT make the same bad decision that I made. I am getting this thing yanked out as fast as I can. Honestly, take my advice and STAY AWAY FROM UVERSE.
