Huge Mess
To begin this story I will preface it by saying I am a recent college graduate. For a few years now I had been on a family talk plan through ATT with my parents. When I got out of college I decided to take my number and move it to a new plan with my girlfriend. In an effort to save money we decided to make it a family plan. This is when all of the trouble started. I went to school in New Hampshire and am now living there, but my old phone number was a New Jersey number. I told the agent at the store that we both wanted to keep our numbers and he assured us that it was no problem.
Needless to say there was tons of trouble, after weeks of trying to roll over my number, I was told that New Jersey numbers and New England numbers cannot co-exist on the same plan together. I had already had the plan for a while and I was told because of the issues, not to pay my bill. I was also told that my first month's worth of service would be taken care of.
When my bill was automatically sent to a collection agency, and I was told my credit was tanking, and that it was MY fault that my service was messed, that was the last straw.
I called and complained only to find out that not only was my bill un-paid by the service agent, but that extra features had been tacked onto my account. A ten dollar a month navigation package, roadside assitance, and some sort of weather/internet thingy. I immediately told them to take it off. It has been a few months now and it is still on there, and I am still working to resolve the issue.
Beware of ATT and really any cellphone companies. They are all far behind in their customer service practices.

Unauthorized billing
I have a GO phone for my 85 year old elderly mother living in a nursing home in FL, I am in NY. Last September it came to my attention that her minutes expired and for some reason the automatic billing did not go through and $450.00 in unused minutes expired. After several calls to ATT they gave us the minutes back with a 25% penalty on a 1 time basis. The same thing happened.
On December 9th, my minutes again expired again and again my credit card did not go through on automatic billing. On both occasions I was able to use the credit card that had ben set up for automatic billing to avoid this situation. I asked them why they did not contact me vial e-mail which they have my address, nor by telephone which they have a contact number to reach me.
ATT claims they can only contact me via a text message to the phone. Most 85 year olds probably have no understanding of text messages. ATT use of email or phone is for solicitation purposes only not for problems I was told by ATT Customer Service.
Loss of $484.00 accumulated unused dollars.

returning a credit balance

This acct was closed on 10/13/08, and at that time there was a credit balance of $238.10. Its THREE months later and I still havent received my money. This is unacceptable since ATT is making a small fortune in interest while they deliberately hold on to my money. I am left with nothing but inconvenience and no compensation for the loss of my opportunity to get interest from the $238.10. Even offering a small credit balance would be better then nothing. I spoke to a manager named Steven Tillman who told me that the check was sent to me on 12/17/08. Today is 1/15/09, it shouldnt take 4 weeks for me to receive this check. I asked for a logical explanation why THREE months since closing this acct and I still havent gotten my money. I was given an apology but was not given an explanation.. Its clear to me that ATT is abusing its size and power against its innocent customer. With todays economy I could use $238.10.

Overcharged
I bought a phone in 2003 in California, I am active duty military and knew that I would be PCSing (moving) to Texas in a year. I asked the salesperson specifically if I would be covered at my new address. They told me that because I was signing up for the extended network plan I would be covered. So, I bought the phone, moved to Texas and continued to use my phone.
The phone said ROAM on the screen at times, and I didn't use my phone during those times, but in other areas it said EXTENDED AREA. So, I used the phone when it said extended area. A month later I received a bill for approximately $2300, as I was charged roaming for the entire month.
I called repeatedly to try and work this out with the company and all I was told was that they (ATT) had to pay the other networks for my use of their towers, so there was nothing they could do, I needed to pay the bill in full.
Eventually after calling again and again they told me they would 'write it off as bad debt'. Now, as a 19 year old, new to the military, just out of high school, I had no idea what that meant. So I asked if that meant I didn't have to pay it. The customer service agent told me that I didn't have to pay it, it would be 'written off'. So, I went on about my business with my new cell company.
Fast forward 4 years, and I receive a summons from a county deputy stating that Palisades Collection, LLC is suing me for $2300 plus interest. I was deploying within a month of receiving this summons, and the company got the judgment against me.
Now I have a judgment on my credit report for the $2300, which I paid off, just to get it taken care of, and try to improve my credit report, but the judgment is still there, only now it will be upgraded to a 'satisfied judgment'. Which basically means I paid it, but it remains as a negative (very negative) mark on my credit for 7 years.
When a company tells me that I will have coverage, and then I find out that there is absolutely no coverage in the entire town, never was, I feel like I was cheated. The sad part is, at this point, I would be satisfied if they would just take the judgment off my credit report, I already paid it.

Billing and collections
ATT settles on an account and then sends it to collections. Please don't ever sign up for ATT Service. I paid the bill to one collection agency and then another one came after me for the original amount. ATT won't deal with us and never would. We have been dealing with this for 6 years. They are going to place a 2800 judgement on us know and garbnish our savings. We are going to let them and then were going to go full anti ATT campaign across the internet. Our goal is to convert 500 ATT customers to verizon or others based on the fact verizon has been great to us for 6 years. We have never missed any payments with them either. If everybody promotes 500 people to change over and really work at it through blogs and advertising ATT wouldn't have any customers left to hurt. No need to bad mouth the ATT group just promote the others to a point of begging people. It works...

Returner beware
On vacation I forgot to bring my charger, so I went to the local ATT store to buy a 2nd one. Let's forget the fact I was given the wrong charger (my bad for not confirming it right there) - when I returned the store was closed so I decided to try Best Buy where I was able to get the right charger...for 40% less!!
So now I go on with my vacation thinking I will return the charger at my local ATT store when I'm back home. NOT!!! They are all independents and won't honor other stores merchandise - even with the receipt.
Now i have to mail it back to the original store for a refund. Lesson learned.

rebates
Never received rebate forms with phones or later after complaining and speaking to a supervisor.
Advertised as a free phone for only 9.99 for each additional line. They don't tell you about hidden costs. My first bill was $250!!!
Still no rebate form and doubt if I will ever get it.
Solution- Don't buy or participate with AT&T
After 6 years service with ATT, cancel and go to Nextel.
Tired of the bull and what I consider a scam.

Poor service!
Does anyone know what can be done about AT&T Wireless service? My calls drop, my signal bar is "one or two" strength. AT&T indicates that they DO NOT HAVE TO GUARANTEE SERVICE. But, depending on the rep I speak with, here is their response: *we have no towers in the area, *we have two towers and cannot understand why no service*it's your phone*when Cingular switched to AT&T, it affected the towers*and NO we cannot allow you out of your legal contract which expires in April 2008. I have 3 phones on the family plan; but I'm not an important client. I've used ATT/Cingular for 9 years... this is my reward....
