Autozone is preparing to open a store in my neighborhood. In preparing this building they have painted over a mural that was on the exterior, rear wall of the building, which faces a parking lot and busy street. This was done, I assume, so that their store could be a clone of every other store they have. The mural was painted by local school children and was colorful and whimsical. There was nothing distasteful or offensive about this painting and it brightened up what would otherwise be a dreary cinder block wall. I feel that this company displayed a stunning lack of sensitivity and showed a complete disregard for the members of my community. They also failed to take the opportunity to use the preservation of the mural to promote themselves as a progressive and community oriented company, one that adds to local color rather than just out to make a buck. For a company that boasts about it's focus on the community on their website, they appeared to have failed miserably in this case. It also appears that they only "focus on the community" in Memphis where their headquarters are located.
