So I went into a BofA branch to get a cashier's check & make a withdrawal (I rarely go inside), and the teller says, "Oh congratulations! You are instantly qualified for a BofA CC with a $12, 500 credit line." I always turn down new credit offers & this one was no different. Here's what happened:
Teller: "but sir, I just want you to look over the information when it comes in the mail." Me: "no thanks, I have one main card & enough credit." Teller: "C'mon, you can just shred the info when you receive it in the mail." I was in hurry, so I was being nice (actually wanted them to get off my back) & I said ok. Me: "now this is not an actual account, right?" Teller: "no, just information." "sign here." Me: "for what? Teller: "just for your authorization to send you the information."
Well, within a week I had "hard inquiries" for a new account from the 3 main credit bureaus. The BankAmericard arrived in the mail shortly thereafter, account number & all. If I shred the card, the account will still be there & they'll probably send me another one in a few months. If I activate the card and never use it, they'll eventually close the account for inactivity & it will negatively affect my credit score.
What is with this industry? Haven't they learned that if people are given too much credit, they'll just drive this financial industry into a death spiral again? I'm not one who will just sit there & do nothing, so this is just the beginning. I haven't gone back to the branch yet, but I will demand them to send the 3 credit bureaus & myself a letter stating that the account was opened inappropriately.
