unauthorized charges on MasterCard
Ordered a new pillow and they offered a 7 day FREE trial for Bargain Link website. So it was FREE I thought I'd give it a try. But never saw anything on their site that I wanted. Then my Master Card statement arrived. March 25 $1.95 charged April 2 $19.95 charged to Bargainlink.ca. Called the 1-800 number they provided the guy kept saying what can we help you with.I explained the charges were not made by me.I aslo wanted to cancel even though I NEVER signed up. Then after hanging up I had a good hought. I called MasterCard and CANCELLED my card.New one is on its way.Let them try now to charge that unauthorized crap--card is BLOCKED by MasterCard.

Worthless products
This gets better and better.

I found this blurb on the Aragon website. Turns out this person worked 5 years at Memberworks, another notorious scammer, also with a Montreal location. According to the short bio here, he worked for two Fortune 1000 companies, Memberworks and, apparently, Second Cup, a chain of coffee bars where, according to the info pasted below, he was a coffee jockey.

Please note that this information is freely available on the Internet, for the price of a few clicks. These people are obviously not very much afraid of being prosecuted, operating on the verge of the illegal/criminal, protected by confusion, the small amounts of money involved and the reluctance of victims to waste their time recovering what is mostly small amounts of money. All they need to do to be successful is to scam a good number of people, close the current scam, open a new one and start anew.

Worthless product
I nearly got sucked into that offer, so I would like to warn others about it.

I received a call from someone saying they were calling me as a follow-up to an on-line inquiry I had made (uh??). That guy was the usual fast-talker, sounded enthusiastic and kept talking about gas vouchers (up to $ 100!), hundreds of thousands of discounted products, blah, blah... All I had to do: allow a $ 1.95 on a credit card to cover the expense of sending membership kits and try the programs for 14 days, 'free'. Then, my benefits would be extended AUTOMATICALLY (19, 95 per month per service) unless I canceled them by phoning customer service. That particular kind of scam is called negative options. We never got that far.

While on the phone, I performed a quick search on the computer and found numerous complaints on this site and others by searching 'bargainlink'. Not good. I searched for more links and found bargainlink.ca quickly enough and one look at it convinced me it was bunk. At that point I simply hung up.

After figuring out a way to enter the site, I took some time to examine it. It was worse than expected. Although the site is real enough and might even work, meaning they might sell actual products, the whole thing is of little or no value. No reputable e-retailer charges $ 20 a month to a 'member' and places like Amazon, Canadian Tire, Chapters/Indigo, Future Shop actually display and sell hundreds of thousands of products, all of it free of charge. I checked some of prices against other retailers and found little or no significant difference. However, the worst aspect was not the prices, it was the lack of choice, making the website close to worthless, or more charitably, close to zero.

For example, Bargainlink has a total of about 6700 titles in the 'Books' section, most of them published before the year 2000, has few best-sellers of any kind, many highly technical titles, a great number of forgotten titles, deservedly so. Some books are pictured on the first pages but cannot be found on the site. What kind of retailer is dumb enough to do that?

In the 'electronics' section, they show a third generation iPod Nano, discontinued in September 2008. Really. The funny part? They don't sell iPods at all, only accessories. Because the website has no practical search capabilities and the product descriptions are poor or non existent, the chances of finding the thing you want and need are at best remote. They don't even give brand names or product numbers for a great number of items, making comparisons impossible.

The search term 'tennis' yields no result in the Sport & Outdoors section.
The search term 'Harry Potter' yields one result in Books.
The entire 'Pet Supplies' category yields six items.
The entire 'Biographies & Memoirs' in Books has 229 items (483, 250 at Amazon)

And on and on...

The same company operates what I suspect are other similar scams. I'm going to do a quick inventory and post more info. If they use the same pattern, the services will be real, of little or no value and the telemarketing will follow the same rules.

I'll be back!

Unauthorized Charges
I bought a Slap Chop which I was outrageously overcharged for shipping...and then to my surprise Vacationsavers and BargainLink charges started showing up on my Mastercard statement. The first ones to go through were $1.95 and $1.96... When I called Mastercard, they said they charged my account again, each company $19.95.

The scam started at Slap Chop website... when the online purchase was completed a screen came up saying click on this link and get a $20.00 gift card for gas and a $70.00 gift card from Canadian Tire. I assume that is how they lifted my credit card info and email address from the Slap Chop site.

Mastercard is disputing the charges at this time

Beware of these companies

Oh and then to add insult... I was just in at Canadian Tire and Shoppers Drugmart. Both were selling Slap Chop for less than $19.95 and no $60.00 shipping charge.
