My girlfriend, also a doctor ( I will refer to her as Dr. V.) bought 2 pairs of Basic Eyewear from Manhattan eye works. I loved the style but more importantly, they were a very lightweight Titanium so comfortable you don't feel them. I too bought a pair. The frame as is, without the perscription cost $350.00. Dr.V. opted to have her RX included right away. She spent an additional $700. per pair. Each pair cost her$1050.00. Her total investment was $2, 100.00, for 2 pr. of glasses. After a week the frame on her glasses broke. A week later the second pair broke. They claim to give you a one time free repair but when picking them up they charged $19.00 for S&H. That's a rip off right there. It was a 2 week wait for the repair to return so they were shipped VIA the cheepest method which is not $19.00
Dr. V. finally gets her glasses back then 3 weeks later the arm hinge snaps on one & the bridge clip snaps in half on the other. Again both pair go back. They collect $70.00 to replace the little bridge clip & $95.00 for the little screw they use to attache the arm. After the 2nd repair of both pairs, three weeks pass & they are again broken. Dr.V. pays even more for the next repair on both pair. She wants to just forget it but once you've invested so much $ to start it is hard to loose it. When they both broke for the 4th time she just gave up & they now sit in a box broken into pieces.
As for my pair of Basic's, I had the less then 24 hours when the bridge clip snapped in half. I got the same deal & had to wait 2 weeks for a replacement. I was told it was free but they wanted $19. when I came to pick them up. When I got the glasses back, I was especially careful with them. It didn't matter, a few weeks passed & the bridge snapped again. They charged me $70.00 for repair. 12 days later & the arm hinge snaps. I asked if there was a warrenty on their repairs. They said "yes" within 15 days. Great I was under the 15 days. I go expecting a free repair & then they tell me no, because it was a different part that broke, so I pay another $95.00. I am still waiting for them to be repaired at this time. I decided this will be the last time I will pay to repair them. I went out yesterday & found a new pair, A different designer brand. They are also a very light weight, comfortable Titanium. & they do not have a history of breaking like the "Basic Eyewear" does.
No one is more careful with glasses then me. I own over 100 pair of designer eyeglasses. I've have had a few pair as long as 30 years & they are still like new. My point is if they break with me they'll break on anyone.
It is mybelief that this company is making more money on repairs then on the original selling price. Surely, they know by now these glasses are defective & cannot standup to normal use.
BEWARE.
