Recently while on an equestrian competition tour, my wife, our seven children, & I, stayed at a motel recommended to us by a chamber of commerce official of Alameda County, California. The name of the hotel was Bay Breeze Inn, located: 4919 Coliseum Way, Oakland, CA 94601. I was initially informed by the manager, whom later informed me she was the owner, that the room would be $45/night per person, but after I asked her for accommodations for eight of whom seven were children, she then insisted the rate was now $55/night. After I drove my truck & horse trailer into the parking area. This manager/owner informed me there would be another $20/night additional charge for parking my truck & horse trailer on their property. After my family & I checked into our room, we found the room smelling of old moldy carpet & stale cigarette smoke, there were no towels or toilet paper, & the bedding did not appear clean, the old mattresses smelled of urine & of stale beer. When informed, the manager screamed & yelled at my wife as if it were her fault & said she would not change our room. I went & spoke to her & received the same response, so I asked for our money to be returned, but she insisted she would not refund my money. Another person hearing the commotion intervened, later I found him to be her son. He had his hired help, of whom I also learned later that he & his wife to be undocumented, illegal Mexican immigrants, to clean & prepare another room for us. When I complained to him about the additional charges, he just smiled & said this was what they charged. That night prostitutes rented many of the hotel rooms, & when going to get some ice, my wife saw drugs being bought & sold openly. That morning I saw police officers on the premises & when I inquired as to why, we were informed that this hotel is home to parolees, many of whom are child molesters.
As a result of this most unpleasant experience my family, relatives, & friends will never participate in another equestrian competition in that part of California, we may forget ever coming to California ever again. Having members of chamber of commerce recommend a motel that clearly placed my family in an area which is a serious public safety threat & a problematic & unsafe environment that could injure or kill others is inexcusable; henceforth my submission of this complaint.
