Fraudulent activity
I have been banking with BB&T ever since they have taken over my original bank which was First Virginia. I have never had issues concerning deposits and overdrafts until I started banking with BB&T.
Over the years I have paid around a couple of thousand in overdraft fees. The first time I figure it was due to my own irresponsibility. But then it happened again, and again, and again. And in one instance I was slammed with 10 overdrafts in one day.
It was around this time I started to pay closer attention to my banking practices and chalked it up to my own irresponsibility. I was told that deposits gets credited to accounts first and then withdrawals. But I'm on direct deposit with my job and have been for years. That's when I realized they were processing my direct deposit after withdrawals forcing my account into overdraft.
There was one instance where BB&T charged overdrafts to my account because of insufficient funds. In that case I had checked my bank statement prior to using my debit card and saw I had sufficient funds and went to make a purchase. I came home checked my statement and saw I was in overdraft. I was extremely perplexed. BB&T has 2 categories when explaining the funs in your account: 'Current' and 'Available'.
'Available' is supposed to be what you have available to make purchases minus any holds that may be in place in your 'Current' balance. The representative explained to me that the reason why my account went into overdraft was because I didn't have sufficient funds in my 'Current' even though my 'Available' showed that I did because of a recent deposit. So they charged me overdrafts based off my 'Current' balance instead of my 'Available' which is completely backwards from how it should be.
Fast forward to today and I have been noticing that money has been disappearing from my account. I would call the customer service and they would spin me around in circles doing all of this math I can't see and saying that the balance is correct. And here recently I've noticed entries into my online banking that reads 'Balance adjustment' where it would add or subtract funds from my account with no explanation as to what this 'Balance adjustment is'. Lately, I've been noticing these 'Balance adjustments' has been taking more money out of my account without explanation. And when I go back to look at it an hour later that entry and the amount is gone, but the amount it said I was adjusted is removed from my account without explanation.
I am done with BB&T as I am convinced they intentionally try to force customer accounts into overdraft because it's a lucrative business for them. And I also believe that they are stealing minuscule amounts of money through the form of 'Balance Adjustments' without offering explanation as to why they're taking money out of customer accounts. I am contemplating a lawsuit.

Illegal Fees
I am trying to find out who regulates BB&T. I have tried the Commonwealth of Virginia State Corporation Commission but cannot locate BB&T in their list of banks that they regulate. I have filed a complaint with just about every other agency known to man but I am sure they will all fall on deaf ears. BB&T shifts transactions around, sometimes waiting up to 5 days to post deposits in order to justify their overdraft fees or NSF fees, Paid Item fees and Maintenance fees. They do not post your balance behind each transaction so you are left to estimate or guess about that. They do not post deposits on Fridays, Saturday, Sundays and in some cases Mondays. However they will post a debit in real time. Just an example, this month alone (March 2009) I made a total of $1, 461 in deposits, and just $588 in withdrawals. I was charged a total of $785 in overdraft/paid item/NSF and Maintenance fees. Although my records show that I have $872 in my account, BB&T has my account at -$166. They do not return my messages any longer. I will continue to seek legal action against BB&T, however I believe that it will ultimately take a class action law suit to bring this company down. If anyone has any information they would like to share or if anyone can be of assistance please contact me.

Overdraft fees!
BB&T and the overdraft fees that are charged are unbelievable! I made mistake, and yes overdrew my account a few dollars earlier this week...unaware of it I used my debit card several times for small purchases, eardrops for my son, a loaf of bread and a bag of chips, $10 in gas, etc...by the time I became aware of what had happened I had 7 overdraft fees charged to my account for a total of $245. Yes, I made a mistake but why wasn't my debit card declined? Why wasn't there some safeguard in place? I asked the relationship banker why after my account was in the negative on Monday, I was able to use my debit card on Tuesday, and Wednesday...she stated that the card is not declined as a "courtesy"...a courtesy..to who...it certainly was not to me! I asked if there was a way to reverse a few of the 7 fees charged, and was told "there's nothing I can do." On top of everything else...if the account was not brought to a zero balance by Sunday...there would be a $30 fee added to the account! Unfreakingbelievable! My father loaned me the money to zero the account.I closed my checking account, and my children's savings accounts! They lost not 1 but 3 customers due to their "courteous" behavior. There is no reason for a bank to be so GREEDY!

unauthorized transfer and major loan problems
The bank uses "cross collateralization" for their loans. If you default on one loan or one comes due and they foreclose,
they will take all the collateral you have put up on any other loans. They used the property description for the
original real estate we bought as collateral rather than what we actually owned. They ended up with liens
against our neighbors' properties! Our attorney discovered all this when she looked at our paperwork.
When we met with them, they gave us a worksheet which was the basis from which they were advising us. Our
attorney told us even that was incorrect. She has been able to get it straightened out but it has been a nightmare dealing with them.
Literally, a nightmare. ( I had a heart attack in the middle of all this. I am sure it was from all the stress
as they threatened to take our home even though we had not defaulted on any loans.)
In a separate incident, they took money out of 1 account to put in an overdrawn account we shared with someone else.
That transaction was unauthorized.

Overdraft Fees
Here recently I was charged twice for this months auto insurance payment. My auto insurance company admitted it was there mistake and refunded my a payment but charging me twice made my bank account over withdraw.
When I explained this to my auto insurance company they said they would be more than willing to get a hold of BB&T and explain the situation and help resolve my problem. When I went to my local bank they informed me I would have to email them from there site and they would pass it along to the person that was in charge of that field.
When I got back home the first thing I did was email them and explained the problem and gave them the number to my auto insurance provider. Well three days later and 5 more overdraft fees on stuff I originally had the money for I got a email back.
They informed me they had no plans to contact my auto insurer and told me that "even if it was a mistake on there behalf it was still a charge towards my account and I was responsible for it."
I sent them a email back saying how was I supposed to know this was going to happen. Any other bank would have denied one of the charges since I didn't have the money for it. They haven't sent back a reply.

overdraft fees
Who ever said morally wrong was exactly right. I have had a BB&T account for 6 months. During this time
I have been feed a total of $925.oo . How can the government allow these banks to rearrange your spending in their favor. I 'm a newly laid off single mother of 4. They took $200 from me this week. Domino affect. I'm sure you all know what I mean. I have asked them for help. All the employees do so well in understanding and then telling you there is nothing they can do. They will fight you on it until your worn down and depressed. Me and my children have no money, no job, and soon to be out on the streets. I wonder how much money BB&T makes every year on bank fees? What are they doing with all this extra money?

OVERDRAFT FEES
PRIOR TO ESTABLISHING AN ACCOUNT WITH THIS BANK, I SPOKE WITH THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT TWICE. BOTH TIMES I WAS LIED TO. THEIR INTENT IS TO GET YOU TO OPEN AN ACCOUNT REGARDLESS OF WHAT THEY HAVE TO TELL YOU. I ASKED VERY SPECIFIC QUESTIONS BECAUSE OF A PROBLEM I WAS HAVING WITH MY OLD BANK. THEN IN 2 DAYS I WAS CHARGED $420.00 IN OVERDRAFT FEES BECAUSE A CASH DEPOSIT I MADE TOOK THREE DAYS TO CREDIT TO MY ACCOUNT. WHEN I WENT TO THE BANK AND SPOKE WITH A "CERTIFIED RELATIONSHIP bANKER" I WAS TOLD THEY WOULD LOOK INTO IT AND CALL ME THE NEXT DAY. I HAD TO CALL THE BANK MYSELF TWICE AND WAS THEN TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING SHE COULD DO. PRIOR TO THAT, I ALSO CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS TOLD I WOULD BE CALLED RIGHT BACK. THREE WEEKS LATER AND I AM STILL WAITING ON THAT CALL.

unlawful withdrawal
I noticed a $950 withdrawal from my daughter's savings account, made on the same day that we made a deposit for an almost identical amount. I thought it might have been an error in the cashing of bonds we had just completed, but it appears to be the sheer stupidity of the Wellington branch personnel in Manassas, VA. A teller apparently wrote down my daughter's account number on someone's else's withdrawal slip, then withdrew the money, not noticing the name on the account, or requiring a signature on the withdrawal slip, ( 3 mistakes so far). When I came in and asked to see an image of the withdrawal slip, the customer service rep was so inept that he literally could not distinguish between my checking and savings accounts. When we finally saw the image and saw that a grave mistake had been made, the branch manager sauntered over (he had been busy with his Blackberry) and told me that he couldn't do anything about it till Monday (it was a Friday) because the teller involved had her tapes under lock and key. They finally did restore the money, but their arrogance and indifference is appalling. This was college tuition money we needed and didn't have in time for the payment. Clearly, you need to check your accounts carefully because BB&T won't. And don't expect any level of customer service to resolve your problems.

Generated overdraft fees
Do you know how sometimes there is a $1.00 authorization that is requested when something is charged to a debit card? Well, BB&T actually charges overdraft fees on the $1.00 authoriztion charge AND a seperate overdraft fee on the remainder of the charge itself. On their website they say that "only the actual amount of the purchase will post to your account", but, what is happening is that they are charging overdraft fees on the pending transactions, including that $1.00.
Here's another example: After a $36 online debit charge, which was within five minutes turned around and credited back in the account, BB&T charged me $70 in overdraft fees. They charged $35 for the $1.00 authorization and then, another $35 for the actual $35 charge itself. So, the transaction was an immediate credit, but it cost me $70 in overdraft fees.
Maybe, in their disclosure statements they have drawn up their own rules and regulations. I don't know. I am not a lawyer. BUT, I do know this...there is such a thing as moral principles that businesses should adhere to. Especially when they are actually using YOUR money to run a business.
It is obvious that they are going under and are desperate and are generating overdraft fees from their customers.
