BB&T Reviews

Consumers don't stand a chance anymore
We recieved a stimulus check for $1200.00 and deposited it in our banks ATM machine. (BB&T) We were then charged $210.00 in overdraft charges in one day because the bank says they can place a hold on the check and only allow $100.00 to be available. We deposited it on Thursday evening. I was told by a bank customer service representative that the funds would not be available until the following Wednesday because Monday was a holiday. We asked two different representatives on Saturday and Sunday to refund the charges with no luck. I emailed and still got no for and answer. We have been with this bank for over 20 years. We have had many loans from them(all paid in full) and had two mortgage loans through them (also paid in full). This is how they show thanks for loyal customers. This was our stimulus check. The only economy getting stimulated in this country is crooked banks and gas stockholders. Consumers don't stand a chance anymore. How sad.

Overdraft fees
I arranged for my mortgage payment to be deducted automatically from my checking account. The online banking site that that "payee will require five processing days to complete transaction". I planned accordingly, so that the money would draft the day I got paid. It ended up being drafted after two days, my account went in the red, and I was charged $630 in overdraft fees over the course of the next three days until my check went in. There was plenty of money in savings, but because it drafted early the checking account was overdrawn. The bank insists that in the disclosure agreement it says two to five days. The customer service representative could not direct me to the relevant passage in the disclosure agreement, however I could readily direct her to the part about "will take five days to draft".

The bottom line is that they care less about my continued business than they do waiving $630 in fines that never should have existed. I am thoroughly disappointed. This account has been open for nine years.

BB&T will rob you blind with fees!
I too have been charged numerous overdraft fees by BB&T. Even though I have a credit card for overdraft protection, I was charged $70 dollars in overdraft fees for $7 dollars worth of purchases, and they said that the reason that they did not pull money from my credit card to cover it was because they can only pull money in $100 increments and I only had $96 available for my balance. So... my question is why can they not pull less than $100 dollars?

Also, they will deduct purchases made immediately from your account, however, deposits are TOTALLY different. IF you deposit a check before the designated time each day, it is not credited until after midnight. If you miss the designated time, it is not deposited until the FOLLOWING business day after midnight. Even when I deposited a check to cover the overdraft fees and bring my balance out of the red, I was charged yet another overdraft fee for an automatic payment that cleared after my check was deposited but before BB&T actually put it into my account. Do not bank with them.

unfair fees
I was also charged overdraft fees on money that should have been credited to my account. I have been with this bank for 10years. Have never had a problem until this past week. I have always deposited my payroll check on Sat. morning and it was credited on Mon. night. This past week I did the same t hing. I checked my balance on Thurs. morning and had a $-411 in my account. I went straight to the bank to see what the problem was. The girl at the bank told us that they had changed their policy on check deposits and they had notified all their customers. I never received any notice. They charged me $350 in overdraft charges the first day, $105 the second day, $140 the third. By that time my direct deposit showed up on my online statement. I also deposited some cash to cover any outstanding debits. I called the phone 24 after leaving the bank and had a $78.00 balance. That should have been sufficient to cover anything that was still out. The next morning I checked my balance again and it was $43.00 with another overdraft fee of $35.00. How can they charge you a overdraft fee if there is a positive balance in your account? I have had it with this bank. They stole $700 of my hard earned money. I wouldn't encourage anyone to use this bank. I have warned everyone of my friends that use this bank.

Ripping customers off!
BB&T has been systematically ripping off its customers by posting debits first, then posting credits or deposit. This is in stark contradiction to the policies banks, in general, have had in regard to this situation. Traditionally, banks would post deposits and credits first, usually at 12:00 midnight, then, they would post any debits or withdrawals, summarily preventing unnecessary overdraft charges.

However, in an effort, it seems, to pad their profit margin, they are posting debits first, then posting credits. This new policy, in essence, increases the amount of fees that they collect, as, a lot, if not most people in the lower and middle class have a lower balance when it gets close to payday, or, when we get a winfall and our checking account balance is low, we expect that our deposit will hit the account before any debits.

Also, my wife has her check direct deposited. She is a school teacher. The checks go into the accounts on Thursday. They do not post until after 6:00 A.M. on Friday, again, allowing for fees to be assessed for any debits posted at 12:00 midnight. It's clear that the banks have instituted this policy to glean more fees from the working class, while leaving the upper class and the well-heeled, virtually untouched.

This practice is an outrage, and if the federal government and state banking regulators won't do anything about it, we the the people, should start taking grass roots measures to rectify this problem.

Excessive Charges and Fees
BB&T is robbing its customers of their hard earned money. I am a fairly new BB&T. When I begin my accounts, I specifically told a customer service representatives that I wanted my checking and savings account to be linked for overdraft protection. A couple months later, I was out of town making purchases. Normally I will transfer funds between accounts. On this occassion I was unable to do so but I knew or thought that funds would automatically be transferred over "because I was suppose to have overdraft protection". I made 5 small transaction during my travel totaling $16.00 I was charged $170.00 in fees. I although I did not write checks, I used my debit card as "a credit transaction" due to their program "Visa Reward Points" if you use credit and instead of debit. I had appropriate funds in my savings to cover $16.00!!!!!! but they did not move funds over. I contacted the bank, and they stated that I had not signed up for overdraft. I am very itelligent person and worked at a bank for many years. They did not sign me up for overdraft protection not myself. They refused to refund the fees and then I was charged $2.00 for making more than 2 calls to customer service per statement cycle and top of that when they finally linked the accounts. They automatically withdrew the $200.00 from savings to take care of the overdraft but charged me $10.00 because they did and I did not transfer the funds over. When called to inquiry as to what the $10.00 was for since it was noted as "misc debit- no description what so ever of the charge" I was charged another $2.00 per call. What is the point of having overdraft protection if I am going to be charged by the bank for the service. Suppose I am ill, in a hospital unable to transfer the money? BB&T has probably made millions from deceiving customers.

Predatory banking practices
I am a Disabled Veteran, and since 5/21/2007, BB&T has raped me for over $987.00 in NSF Fees, when I have had a positive balance, and while they were SITTING ON CASH deposits, and now we are in SURVIVAL MODE trying to stop their Feeding Frenzy... I am writing letters as we speak to the Attorneys General of Florida, Georgia and North Carolina, as well as the FDIC to complain about their PREDATORY business practices.

If THERE IS a way to band together and stop them, then I'M IN, but I doubt we will ever be able to stop them, until a Congressman or Senator is raped by them... THEN watch how fast they straighten up...

If any of you figure it out, let me know!!

P.S. I am told that 6 cases warrants a Class-Action Lawsuit, is anyone interested?

They are a rip off!
They are a rip off and do your transaction and deposit when they want which causes hundreds in fees. This is crazy. I advise everyone to stay far away from them. Most normal banks do transaction as they come in not 2 or 3 days later or just to decide which ones to process first in order to get most $'s in fees out of you. This is wrong very wrong. Lets band together to stop them.
