about a year ago these people sent me a set of what was supposed to be legal documents. they didnt have a case number or clerks signature. i called them and they said they were hired by HFC to collect on a debt. they told me that debt was more than 10, 000. the first person i talked to was a woman and she yelled at me and told me that if i didnt pay i was going to be sued and they were going to attach my husbands pay. then they proceeded to ask me if i had any equity in my house or in a vehicle that i could use to pay them off. they got me to set up a payment plan of $550 a month and they said their client wouldnt accept anything less. after 2 months of making these payments i told them it was killing us financially and they said they didnt care and if i stopped making the payments that i would be sued. after the second month of payments i stopped and i didnt hear from them for an entire year. at the beginning of this month i get served with some more papers out of nowhere. i contacted an attorney for fair debt collection and federal credit statutes. he told me to go ahead and answer the summons but still no case number or signature. i got online to my states court website to look up pending cases or past cases. they havnt filed anything with the courts. i really dont think they have any intention to file suit against me and besides HFC is no longer operating in this country but HSBC is still around.
