Covering a child under 2 parents
Our company recently switched Health Insurance from Anthem Blue Cross to Blue Shield of California, we were told by our insurance broker, Kevin, that there were no real changes to the policies, just switching to a new company to save money. On Monday January 24th, 2011, Kevin came into the dealership to pass out temporary insurance cards. Just before mine is handed to me he then tells me of the "issue" with my policy. I am a single person and mother to a 7 year old child whose father also works at the same place of business, I am told that Blue Shield will not cover the same child under 2 people that work at the same place of business. I find this completely against the benefit of my child, If her father and I were married and then divorced and we had a legal document stating that we each had to provide 50% of medical coveragel would I still be told no? I am now being told by the insurance company providing that insurance that I can't cover my own child who has had double coverage since she was 6 months old. I am happy to pay the premium of a parent with a child I have been doing so for 10 years, I am now told that because they don't know how to process these types of claims that they have in their admendments that a child can not be covered by 2 parents that work in the same business, Kevin got approval from underwriting at Blue Shield to allow the coverage and a VP of the claims department at Blue Shield denied my child health insurance, because they don't know how to process this type of claims. What are my rights in a situation likes this? Any guidance that can be given in this situation is appreciated. Thank You, Lynn Kennedy
