Boingo Wireless Reviews

Scam
Boingo is deceptive and makes fraudulent charges. Boingo deliberately conceals aspects of the "As you Go" $7.95 24-hr. access charge for web connection at U.S. hotspots. I has used the service once, so I had a username and P.W. So, I tried 3 times with my username to switch to the $9.95 montlhy plan, as I planned to use the service as I travelled to several different airports over the course of a week. After not receiving a confirmation or instructions otherwise, I accessed a connection, so I thought all was ok. Days later, I found I had been billed $7.95 4 times within a 24 hr. period (all without a confirmation at the time of log in). When I called Customer Service to complain, they said I could only switch plans by calling and creating a new account with a different username and that the terms of service are clear. Well, if one spends at least 30 minutes trying to find all that on the website, it is still not to be found! Try to find "Terms of Use" or the hidden "surprises" of the $7.95 plan. Most people are probably too busy to even bother to ask for a refund, much less to spend hours to get to the bottom of this.

Slow service
I am currently sitting in Heathrow with a delayed flight (again) and BOINGO wireless service is very slow (again). This happens in other airports as well, as BOINGO seems to have a monopoly. I don't mind paying but I expect good service when I do so.

No service, pain to cancel
I attempted to sign up to Boingo wireless at Heathrow airport. The connection to sign up was terrible but I only needed to send one email for work so I persisted and some how managed to create two accounts. I never was able to get an internet connection so I assumed the accounts were never created. After getting my first bill I contacted them to refund the money and close the account. 3 months later I notice they have been billing me almost $50 a month.

With the help of my credit card company I have hopefully gotten them to refund all but one charge for $24.

No Refunds Even If Service Doesn't Work
I signed up for Boingo Mobile service prior to taking a trip overseas. I verified before leaving that Boingo had hotspots (thousands of them) in the destination country. Upon arrival, and for the entire trip, I was unable to connect to any "Boingo compatible" hotspots. I exchanged e-mails with Boingo support and submitted error reports on several non-working hotspots. The issue was never resolved and the service was useless to me on my trip. Upon returning I called Boingo to request a refund for my month's service fee, and the gentleman flatly refused. "We are not able to refund the first month's fee." was his comment. Not sure what "unable" is supposed to mean, since refunds are a normal part of business. "Unwilling" is probably the more correct word. Apparently the 55 or so minutes I spent in Chicago testing the service was sufficient in Boingo's eyes to warrant the full month's charge, even though the service was useless to me for the rest of the month while I was abroad. Horrible, horrible company. Will not do business with them again.

Stay far away from Boingo Wireless
Purchased one-time BOINGO wifi access at the Regan National Airport in Washington DC. First, it makes you download and install their software in order to connect to the internet. In the description they state it's not necessary to do so, but HIGHLY encouraged. I tried using Boingo without installing their software - no luck. But $$ paid, so I give in and install it. Next, it kicks you our hourly - you have to re-login in every hour. I worked for 3hours and exactly after each hour it kicks you our. Which normally wouldn't be an issue (even though it's quite annouying), but I was using VPN connection to my work and every time they'd kick me out I had to go through a lot of troubles restoring VPN connection and re-logging everywhere...

Bottom line - stay away, stick to T-mobile and AT&T wireless.

Once Boingo gets your credit card, they keep charging it no matter how many times you request them to cancel
Once Boingo gets your credit card, they keep charging it no matter how many times you request them to cancel the service -- in fact they do cancel the service and then just keep charging -- then they can't find a record of you to stop the charges. They give you the run-around -- if you can get through.

I wound up paying almost $24 for about 40 minutes of usage
I signed up to use the daily service and got charged again without my knowing when I just moved to another terminal in the same airport! It is not clear at all that this would happen. I wound up paying almost $24 for about 40 minutes of usage!

The service wording makes it seem like you have it for 24hrs. I knew I would be moving around. If it was clear, I would have gone with a different provider!

You will automatically get charged, and they will not warn you about that
You will get prompted to log in whenever you are near a hotspot - even if you are in a location where you can get free wireless internet. You will automatically get charged, and they will not warn you that you are not accessing the free internet, but Boingo service for which you will be charged.
