Capella University Reviews

Victim of unethical practices June 2, 2011
Minneapolis, MN
Enrolled at Capella after they acknowledged that I qualified for financial aid to cover classes. Four weeks into classes, I was told that I really didn't qualify and that I might as well not even attempt to finish the class because there is no financial aid to cover it. Next thing I knew, they were billing me for$6600. They said that they enrolled me and said I qualified for fin aid without even knowing if I did or not. Now they want me to pay for their mistake. I didn't finish the classes, owe them $6600, and they are threatening to put on my credit and take to collections. BEWARE! They are a complete scam. They will not let me talk to anyone in their business office, and they just keep threatening me. DO NOT ATTEND CAPELLA UNIVERSITY

Capella Education Company is an online postsecondary education services company. It operates through its wholly owned subsidiary, Capella University. Capella Education Company faces an investor lawsuit filed on behalf of those who purchased common stock of Capella Education (CPLA) between February 16, 2010 and August 13, 2010 against Capella Education Company over alleged violations of Federal Securities Laws. The lawsuit followed a report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office with the title “Undercover Testing Finds Colleges Encouraged Fraud and Engaged in Deceptive and Questionable Marketing Practices” which detailed undercover investigations into 15 for-profit schools that uncovered misconduct by school staff.

On August 4, 2010, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee conducted a hearing on for-profit education firms, where Government Accountability Office representative, George Kutz, presented the findings of report GAO-10-948T, "For-Profit Colleges: Undercover Testing Finds Colleges Encouraged Fraud in Deceptive and Questionable Marketing Practices." The report detailed undercover investigations into 15 for-profit schools that uncovered misconduct by school staff. According to this GAO study, the college personnel at schools owned by Education Management Corp. may have encouraged applicants to falsify their financial aid forms to qualify for federal aid and pressured applicants to sign a contract for enrollment prior to allowing them to speak to a financial advisor.

According to the investigation by a law firm former and current students of Strayer Education, Inc. (NASDAQ:STRA) and its Strayer University may have material information concerning those allegations and may be eligible to file a complaint for allegedly misleading students.

Also whistleblowers may according to the law firm be able to assist or file their own complaint. Under the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act signed into law in July the SEC can award between 10 percent and 30 percent of any monetary sanctions of more than $1 million to whistleblowers who provide “original information” leading to a successful SEC enforcement, so the law firm. Whistleblowers may remain completely anonymous and work with the SEC through an attorney. Under the new law, so the investigation, whistleblowers are also granted expanded rights and protections against employer retaliation when disclosing information of corporate wrongdoing to the SEC.

Recently the Attorney General of Florida Bill McCollum launched an investigation into some for-profit education companies. On October 19, 2010, the Wall Street Journal reported that Florida Attorney General's office has launched an investigation into five for-profit colleges, including four publicly traded schools, seeking information on potential misrepresentations in financial aid, recruitment and other areas. The state is reportedly looking into allegations at Washington Post Co.'s (WPO) Kaplan Inc.--including its Kaplan University, Kaplan Educational Centers and Kaplan College units--and at Education Management Corp.'s (EDMC) Argosy University, Apollo Group Inc.'s (APOL) University of Phoenix; Corinthian Colleges Inc.'s (COCO) Everest College and privately held MedVance Institute.

Those who are former or current student of Capella Education Company (NASDAQ:CPLA) and its Capella University, who experienced any fraud, wrongdoing, deceptive and questionable marketing practices, or had any school loan issues, , or those who have information relating to the investigation including also former employees or whistleblowers, have options and should contact the Shareholders Foundation, Inc by email [email protected] or call +1(858) 779 - 1554

Scam
I am done with my coursework at Capella. Managed to pull a 3.8 gpa and just finished comprehensive exams. I must say the further I got into the program the more "worried" I became. I complained about an instructor once, and so did many other students in my class. This teacher never logged on and failed everyone with zero feedback, changed her rubric etc...I manage to pass this one as well (after mass emails to the instructor informing her that I was reporting her weekly). One quarter later, student services got back to me to address my complaint. I was like "hey I finished this class last quarter, pretty late in the game dont ya think?" all kinds of bs appologies. Now I finished my comps and failed all three questions. The feedback instructors gave me only mentioned "APA issues" guess what? APA only counts for 5 points out of the 50 on each quesiton. How is that a fail? I asked my mentor for ellaboration and he said he could not do that and to just do my best in the rewrite. I did I spend another 60+ hours attempting to rewrite that damn thing with no feedback. I managed to pass all question but one. And again no feedback, I have not even been told which question I failed. I've asked for it several times and no one will get back to me. I NEED that info in order to appeal. I want to sue this F###ing school? Anyone in?

Fraud and Greed
Stay as far away from this poor excuse of a school. Unfortunately, as other individuals have complained, Crapella will hound and promise you anything to get you to enroll and when you do, it is all about money!! I completed my doctorate and when I received their "diploma" it felt like a slap in the face. It was a piece of common cardboard with and looked like a 5th grader printed it off their home computer. When I called to complain I was offered a "Capella Medallion" for my concerns!!! They are all about "show me the money" and could give a damn about you if you raise a stink. Stay far, far away from Crapella.

bad service
I have been enrolled in this university for some time now and my time there was spent doing middle school work with no student support from this school. Let's just say for half of the time enrolled at this school their website has been down. I called tech suport and told them the problem, they were not any help. They told me when the site is down they can't do anything (like I'm so surprised) about it except make a note in my account that I called with a issue. My academic advisor who almost never returns my calls is not much of a help either. As a matter of fact, I can't say any of my three counselors have ever took the time to assist me with any problems I encountered. I am always given the run around every time I call(whenever I get to actually speak to someone)

I have also been requesting my grades and GPA from last semester (for the past 3 weeks) which NOONE has replied!!! I am so tired and frustrated at this school and ALL OF IT'S SO CALLED SERVICES!! I have spoken to my financial counselor and HER SUPERVISOR, but to no avail. This is ridiculous and unacceptable! Why is it a HUGE ISSUE to give me my grades?!!! As far as I know from relatives and friends who attend OTHER online schools, they receive their grades the first week after the semester ends. But here I am, it's been now 3WEEKS since I have been REQUESTING MY GRADES! This school is the biggest mistake I ever made, and would not recommend my worst enemy to enroll here!!! I hope after whoever reads this, I can FINALLY get some answers and will be able to continue with my education. If I don't get my issues resolved in a timely manner, I will withdraw from this (not so professional) institution!!!
FYI... THIS SCHOOL WILL LOSE MORE AND MORE STUDENTS IF SOME ACTION IS NOT TAKEN TO IMPROVE IT'S SERVICES!!
...I READ ABOUT ALL THE COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER STUDENTS THAT WERE ENROLLED HERE, AND I MUST SAY IT'S TERRIBLE! MAYBE SOMEONE FROM THE SCHOOL SHOULD TAKE SOME TIME AND READ SOME OF THEM, IT PROBABLY WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Fraud and cheating
I contacted Capella University about Ph.D. classes in business, and was hard-sold by their 'counselors' who called me and pressured me to enroll. The per credit cost I was originally quoted was increased after my first term. They also did not mention the additional costs of attending required residential colloguia, which add a hug amount to the cost of a Capella education. The travel, plus a week off from work, plus Capella's fees of $1, 350 for each week make these more expensive than traveling to Europe. I tried to withdraw from my classes, and was told I had withdrawn. Later, I got a bill for about $1, 800 from Capella, even though I did not participate in the classes and thought they had been dropped. I have complained to the Federal Trade Commission and the Washington State Attorney General about this, and Capella refuses to recognize the error.

They suggested that I borrow the money from one of their lenders and pay them that way. I insisted that I was unwilling to pay for services I never received. Capella still insists I pay. Caveat Emptor!
