Unauthorized billing
Just received in the mail a notice that my credit card interest rate is being raised to 29.4% and I am never late on my payments. This is criminal that these Banks/Credit Card companies can do this to their good customers after they received Government Bailout Funds from the Taxpayers of America. I plan on paying this off, hard to immediately though cause I am unemployed, and canceling this card. I am sick of the Corporate Greed in this country and upset that the banks and credit card companies are GETTING AWAY WITH IT!!!

Overcharged
More than 5 years ago, I asked my credit card company, Capital One Bank Mastercard if I could have a lower interest rate based on my good credit rating and never missing a payment. I was given a rate of 5.9%, and told that rate would be in effect as long as I held a balance and had no missed payments. I had a balance of several hundred dollars and never missed a payment.
I am now informed that my rate will jump to over 14%. They admit I never did anything wrong, they just changed their minds and need more money. In Feb of 2007 they did the same thing, having sent a notice that I would lose my 5.9% rate even though I was not at fault. My repeated complaints gave me the same reply- 'accept the new rate or leave'. Back then, my rate never was increased.
Thats why I was surprised to have this same trick threatened upon me again. Could it have been a threat of lawsuits or massive complaints that stopped the rate increase back then? Can we stop it this time? If not, I will pay off the card and say goodbye to Capital One.

Auto Loan
I purchased a car in April of 2007 a Mitsubishi Gallant with and got a 1200 dollar trade in value on the old Taurus. I was literally robbed at the dealership with an 18% interest rate over five years! I am paying $44000 on a $22000 car. I pay 530.83 a month on top of my bills.
I cannot refinance because I have been in and out of work so it's hard for me to catch up and the people there have no problem calling you 10-15 times a day to harass or lie when you ask them a question about refinancing. They don't lower rates nor can I get another bank to refinance at a lower one because of my score.
Horrendous customer service:
I have been in and out of work as an IT consultant and the current Government outsourcing and guest worker policies I need a vehicle to get to work in NJ CT Long Island I can’t find anything in NYC forget that!
I asked them about giving me a deferment one says I could get a double deferment if I make a payment now over the phone and incur a $14 service fee then on the very next call say they never agreed to that and say I have to make a second payment over the phone again with the threat of repo and they make one deferment.
They make it almost impossible to pay them charging $14 for over the phone pay fees yet they constantly call insisting you pay by phone 10-15 times a day and $30 late fees.
I somehow managed to get it in and they give my criteria as to get the deferment over via U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail and when I comply including sending my $35 deferment request within the 15 days they ask of me sounds like a Bullshit game show at this point, they finally told me that I did not comply and they wouldn't do it. I can’t get the same answer twice from them. It’s like they make it up as they go along. The best one “you can’t pay online if you are behind in payments you have to pay by phone and incur the fee.” That was a lie too.
I made two payments on line in one month. Then a check which I thought got lost which I had told my bank to put a stop payment on. The day after I paid online the second payment in a month, the next they tried to cash the check they must have had it for over a week!
My cars Book value is 11, 500 and I still owe the 22, 500 sticker price as the balance for over a year there is something very wrong with this.
When I saw the condition my car was in when I received it broke my heart the repo company COAF hired vandalized my car! I spent the entire year keeping the car in mint condition and in two weeks the car was violated to the point I didn’t feel my car was mine any more.
Upon examining the damages to the car caused by the illegal seizure, I have the following:
1) Driver and passenger side Mirrors have been struck with sufficient force to cause detachment on both one almost completely.
2) The interior looks vandalized grease and grime on the plastic a half dollar sized hole on the driver side cloth panel and two of the same size holes ripping the mat on the drivers side.
3) Double sided Velcro tape on the interior windshield and Capital One stickers on the front and back removed with stains writing all over the front and back on the cars windows.
4) Seat and steering wheel adjusted as if it was driven the odometer shows evidence it was driven to the Adessa Patchogue location from long Island City
In short the car looked like it was vandalized with little regard for the vehicle.

Terrible experience
I had good credit and gained the payment protection plan in 2004. I lost my job in 2007 and decided to go to school, so I worked part time for the next year. Upon getting back out into the job market in the bad economy, I was struggling to pay my bills while becoming self-employed.
Since I was almost 2 months behind on my payment to Capital One and they were calling my phone daily, I got my act together to call them and finally admit, I needed to activate this payment protection plan. While questioning my 'most recent' job history, I honestly admitted I had been only working part time. Without further consideration, I was told bluntly, the plan is not covered for part time employment!!! I was in shock.
The paperwork they sent me in 2004 had all of the particulars and I should have been familiar with the restrictions, I was told! So, for every month I had the payment protection for 4 years averaging maybe $15 to $36 a month I paid into it is now all for nothing. My back up plan in case of catastrophe is a joke! However, they explained, it is still good coverage for disability (major) or death 'god forbid' (surely accidental only)! But I need this coverage now. What about a credit, I asked. We are only authorized to credit you $30 at this office, otherwise, please write to our corporate offices! Ha!! What a scam! Even if I did read the paperwork in 2004 I forgot it. Even my regular insurance coverage sends me paperwork every 6 months to a year so I can review it!
As noted by the pompous representative on how I was given the paperwork when I signed up 4 years ago and should be familiar as my responsibility 'just as you do with your insurance'!
So, I called back to talk to someone about the hardship program they offer, whatever that is. Meanwhile, the new representative, wants to take a payment over the phone. I explained my situation and that I was denied using the protection program because I was not employed full time prior to activation and HE was surprised. He sells this 'great protection plan' in these hard times. I bet he doesn't know the fine print and if he did he probably wouldn't own the plan himself. So, they have easily kept $2, 000 of my hard earned and dutifully paid payment protection money and I will be reported to the credit bureau!!
I will never fall for this again. I could've saved that money and paid them off, but I thought I had my ducks in a row in case 'god forbid'! I am without a job and need MY MONEY to assist me in hardship. boy I am hot. What a SCAM! I can't believe this (well, really I can - corporate BS)!

Unauthorized billing
I have a capital one master card.I made a over the phone payment so it wouldn't be late. I wanted to use my debit they said we can't do that you have to use a check.Which they charge $15 to do. So I gave the girl my check # and she wrote the wrong # down.A week later I get a letter saying this is an invalid account. So I call capital one back and tell them they wrote the wrong check # down.So they had me do it again don't they write the wrong # down again. A week later the fraud department calls me.She tells me to call her back tomorrow.I called 29 times left 6 messages and this lady will not call me back.Than shortly after that I get a letter in the mail from capital one saying they have been trying to reach me to take care of this which they haven't.So I call again get the voicemail leave yet another message begging her this time to return my call. She never did so I filed a report with the bbb. That $97 payment owed is now a $300 plus payment.

Dealing with the Economy
Here's how Capital One is dealing with the economy to get good customrs to charge more----they are raising my interest rates to twice what I'm payihng on the card issued by my credit union. I have never missed a payment and I've been paying way more than the minimum monthly payment. I owe less than $500 now. I've had the card for over ten years. Up until recently they were begging me to sign up for rewards or a lower rate. Now my rate jumps to at least 17.9% on any new purchases. And on top of these "favorable rates" I pay an annual fee of $69. Do you think I'm going to keep this card open? No way.

Awful bank
We were recently looking over our capital one credit card statement and came across what cap-one calls 'payment protection', along with it came a charge for $18.15, which looking into we found they charge 1% of your total balance. We went into investigating this, first, we called the number listed along side the charge on our statement. We first spoke to a capitol one representative who said we need to speak with the people at Payment Protection, who apparently is it's own entity outside of Capital One. We spoke with a representative at PPI who apologize for being unknowingly sold the product on behalf of Capital One, we ask the representative how long I've been being charged the Payment Protection Plan and she said it had been since November of 2007! We were blown away, we had never noticed this charge but we didn't expect it to be there in the first place, so we fought with the representative at PPI and after getting forwarded through 4 stages of management we finally got someone who agreed to refund us $100 and that was the maximum they would refund. We appreciated that since the responsibility should be placed on Capital One's shoulder for unknowingly charging for me a product. Our next step was to go back to Capital One to reclaim the remaining charges owed to us, which we feel is in the neighborhood of $235 BEFORE interest. After speaking at length with two representatives we were forwarded to the 'dispute department', and after speaking at length with three stages of representatives and 'managers', one decided to tell me they WOULD NOT refund the money and continued to try to send us back to the Payment Protection Company, which we would not allow them to do. After a heated conversation in which he refused to send us to someone higher or cooperate with us he decided to hang-up! A Capital One representative fraudulently sold us this product for a profit and a commission I'm sure and it is NOT the the fault of the people at the Payment Protection Company since they only provide a product for Capital One the sell and make a profit from, therefore it is Capital One's responsibility to refund us back the remaining balance of what we've been charged.
We've done a lot of research on this and it seems we are not alone, the search engines turned up hundreds of similar cases where Capital has either unknowingly sold or outright mis-sold this product to consumers and refused to take responsibility or properly service it's customers. We've managed to cancel the 'Payment Protection Plan' and as soon as the balances on these cards are paid we intend to cut all ties with Capital One and in the mean time we intend to do as much damage to Capital One's reputation as possible, it sounds like the $135 Capital One stole from me is more important than them retaining me as a customer.
I feel more people need to know about this and should warned about dealing with a company like Capital One who takes advantage of it's customers and then refuses to offer any type of customer services when it comes to handling disputes. Anything the BBB can do to arbitrate this matter we would sincerely appreciate since the last thing Capital One did for us was hang up the phone on us.
Since the amount charges for the Payment Protection Plan is based on 1% of our total balance there is no way to calculate exactly what should be refunded to us. We estimate AT LEAST $235 PLUS INTERESTED paid on the plan has been charges to us, we aren't looking to pursue the interest paid be we feel $235 is the right number, the Payment Protection Plan company has already refunded us $100 of the money, so the remaining $135 is Cap One's responsibility.

Capital One customer service is terrible
I had to travel to the UK for work last year and Capital One froze my credit card after making a purchase there, based on the potential for fraud. I called them (a $20/min call), waited on hold for 20 mins, and told them to unfreeze it b/c I had no other source of money w/o the credit card. They said that I have to call them any time I leave the country or this would happen again. They also said that they would reactivate the card, and they did not. I was stuck in another country for 4 days w/o any source of money, so I had to use a friend’s credit card. Needless to say, when I got back, I canceled the card.
Then, a year later, a service that I use still had the Capital One card on file and charged it. I got a bill from Capital One and called them up. I wanted to know why the charge was not denied since I had canceled this card a year previously. They claimed that it was not canceled when I called 1 year ago. They of course had no explanation for this, and so I made it abundantly clear that I wanted the card canceled now. In the process of expressing how this was inexcusable, the representative hung up on me.
I would be very careful that Capital One actually cancels your credit card when you instruct them to. Apparently, there is recollection of events or anyone held responsible for this at these banks, even though they claim to record the conversations. I will never use Capital One again.
