After our house was listed, I received a phone call from Michael of Captial Van Lines offering to give me a free in-home estimate. He was very pleasant and offered a lot of good advice. He told me that the cost would be $.30 per pound and he estimated the total to be 10, 000 pounds. I asked if they took credit cards and was told they take Visa & Mastercard. Half on the day they load and the balance once all the furniture was in place. We hired the company.
On the day of the move, a team of 4 movers showed up 2 hours late. We asked if they would like the deposit now and were told that they wanted to get started. After about 3 hours of loading (the most expensive items) the foreman said, let's do the contract and the deposit. He then told us that it was cash only. There was nothing we could do. Our ATM cards have a limit of $500 per day cash advance and with 3 ATM's we were able to get the deposit.
Later that evening we received a call that the price had jumped to $5000. Once they had gassed up, the weight increased to 14, 000 pounds. The next day they showed up again 3 hours late. The banks were on a holiday and we could only get another $1500 cash. We told them we would give them a check. They would not release our items. They stayed overnight in a hotel and made us pay for that before they would give us our furniture.
The owner of the company has a very heavy Russian accent. He is rude and yells at you when you tell them that they lied. Please do yourself a favor and do not use Capital Van Lines or Interstate. They hold you hostage and are extortionists!
