April 1, 2008
Below is a copy of the complaint letter given to the property manager:
Dear Ms. Hunter,
I am writing you concerning a problem that has arisen with your community Manager Lakita Greenway. On April 1st 2008, I went down to the leasing office to pay my rent. Upon handing over my rent check I was told that a personal starter check would not be accepted due to my address not being printed at the top of the check. I in turn let Lakita Greenway know that both my rent check for March 1st and the water bill were drawn on starter checks that were cashed.
While signing my rental agreement, I was told that my deposit and that the prorated rent required a money order only, there after I would be able to pay with a personal check. Once March 1st came about I paid my rent and water bill with two separate started checks. During the 30 days of renting I was never notified or informed in anyway that it was in your policy not to except starter checks. There is nothing stated in my rental agreement, I was never notified by the leasing office, my checks weren’t returned both checks were deposited.
I am very confused and concerned by this. When I asked Lakita Greenway to explain further I was quickly shut down by her and told that “If the rent was not paid in the form of a money order within three days I would be charged a late fee!” I tried to explain to Lakita Greenway that I am a college professor and that the rest of the week are my longest work days. I teach from 9 am – 10pm and would not get there in time to get a money order and hand it to her, since there is no drop box or slot to hand in rent.
I tried to offer two different solutions. I asked if I could hand it in on Saturday morning, or for Lakita Greenway to deposit the check this month and from that point on I would pay with a check with my address on it or with a money order. At that point she became belligerent and condescending. Stating that, “She didn’t know what to tell me and couldn’t help me with this!” Since she stated that she could not help me with this, I asked to speak to her manager and was told that information isn’t given out to tenants. I asked if she could call her manager but she refused. I asked to see copies of the rent check she refused that also. My rent check was left with her and no solution was given. I think it was unfair to not be notified of such policies and then unfairly charge late fees. I found Lakita Greenway to be highly unprofessional and extremely incompetent. I was very disgusted with her flipped attitude. She is a horrible Community Manager. I have filed a complaint with the complaint board for Real Estate and will also be contacting the property realtor.
As of April 2nd I have not received the phone call promised by Lakita Greenway from you Ms. Hunter as to how we can immediately solve this matter.
I look forward to hearing from you.
