Check cashing
I have been a loyal Publix customer since moving to Florida in 1995. On Saturday, 10/10, I did my regular weekly grocery store trip to Publix. At checkout, I wrote a check like I have for 14 years or more at this store. Out of the blue, my check was turned down without explanation. Not a new account, had valid ID, had a Publix loyalty card, etc. I was told they have no information, just contact this Certegy company. I was so embarassed and disappointed in Publix after all these years, instead of using one of my credit cards or debit card, I left the store and let them put the groceries back. When I got home, I immediately logged on to my bank account. Everything was fine. I then called the 800 number and checked the online site they gave me. Said it couldn't find the transaction. So I waited over 20 minutes on hold, then finally spoke with someone with a strong foreign accent (hard to understand). She told me there was no negative information in their file and advised me to contact my bank. I called my Bank and they stated nothing had been reported and my account was in good standing with them. So, now I don't know if I can ever write checks again, for no reason, and with no way to determine how to correct. And, like other stringers, I saw the "Gold Membership" application offer. Way too much information and no guarantee my checks would then be cashed. And I had to agree to give them all this information, allow them to do anything they wanted to with it, authorize them to contact anyone they wanted to about me and, just for good measure, allow them to charge me a "fee" for a "dishonored" check. I found so many complaints so far back in time and with so many good name retailers, I am so disheartened that nothing has been done. I plan to contact my legislator and state AG to determine what, if anything, can be done about this unconscionable practice.

denied check
I agree with anyone that wants to start a class action suit against Certegy check service. I wrote a check at the store that I work at and the check was declined "due to my check writing profile". How embarassing! Bad enough that the check was declined but to have it happen with where I work!! And I can't get anyone on the phone. I was on hold for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Nothing but FRAUD
The first run in I had with this company was after writing a $70 check at a Big 5 Sporting Goods. My check was denied and I was given information to contact Certegy to discuss the problem. First, in a panic, I called my bank to ensure my account had not been wiped out or something. After confirming I was in good standing at the bank, I called Certegy to learn that there's no legitimate reason that my check was denied other than that the numbers (routing, account, amount, etc) some how matched the guidelines (unspecified guidelines) that constituted fraudulent check cashing. I have no criminal history, negative bank history or negative check writing history, I had money in my account and a valid photo ID with me at the time I was trying to make the purchase and this company had the ability to deny my purchase FOR NO REASON. For a "solution", Certegy did try to get me to sign up to be a "gold member" with their companyh so I wouldn't have this problem but I told them to stick it where the sun don't shine. In my opinion, they are bullying consumers...unless we divulge more information about ourselves and give them the power to monitor us more closely, they will make it impossible for us to make purchases in any form other than cash. I've read that they can also randomly deny consumer's ATM transactions as well.
I am more convinced that I am being bullied as the same problem happened to me again yesterday at Target for a check under $200. I called Certegy immediately to learn the SAME BS they told me the first time. I told them that it was clear they were black listing me since I rarely write checks and this was the first opportunity they had to deny me again since the last run in. Of course, they denied they were seeking me out, but what the hell else do you call it? I just so happened to meet the "guidelines" again??? What are the odds of that? Again, I was pursuaded to become a "gold member" with their company in order to prevent this harrassment...This time I agreed so I could get the paperwork in my hot little hands. I want to get as much info. about them as possible as I am certain they are running an illegal practice.
There is no difference from what they are doing than if I was randomly asked to leave a store upon entrance for NO REASON...would we stand for that? Let's not let this company get away with this. I've complained to every and any outfit that I could: Consumer Affairs, FTC, Better Business Bureau of West Florida, Target Corporate Offices, Big 5 and anyone else I can think of. Please do the same!!!

Terrible company
I was told by a Certegy Supervisor that their Check verification service was one of the best in the world. That very day Certegy Check Verification Service issued our business an approval Number for a check written by a man who has been in jail and Prosecuted several times for writing bad checks and also issued an approval number on a check written on an account and bank that has been closed for over 4 years. I would think if this system was one of the best in the world that it would be linked somehow to bad check writers and certainly have a database that recognizes closed banks and accounts. I was told that the approval process is based solely on the history of the check writer with Certegy. After reading the complaints of people with absolutely no bad history having their checks denied by Certegy and then the people with horrible historys having their checks approved, WOW! I think that One of the best systems in the world has a glitch! This is a problem!

Declined Check
On 6/23/2009 I checked out of a store that I frequent (Target), averaging 3-4 transactions per month, wrote a check, on an account opened for five plus years, with my drivers license verified, which was declined. While the sales clerk was very friendly, all that she could offer was a slip of paper with the Certegy phone number. Ironically, I was able to use my Debit card, attached to the same checking account, to clear the transaction. A bit ironic.
When I called the Certegy number, the clerk took the info, pulled my credit report and checked my bank account, and came back to tell me that there was nothing derogatory on my report, nor was there a problem with my account. How reassuring to tell me something that I already know since I'm a banking exec at the institution where the checking account resides. I was informed that on occasion, the "model" would produce a false negative, that it is NOT based on your credit history or checking account soundness but on whether or not you fit a "fraudulent profile". I specifically asked for additional detail of the model - since I was in a store that I frequently shop, have held the same employment and residence for 10 years, had valid identification, and was using a checking account that has been opened and used for over 3 years. There was no detail provided, just "sincere apologies".
This was both humilating and embarassing. I have filled a complaint with Target and intend to consult my attorney as to a possible defimation of character. I do find it ironic that you can submit an application for "Gold status". I did some research and the Boston Globe previously did an article about Certegy which can be found at http://www.boston.com/business/articles/2006/...
I aslo fit the last paragraph of the application noteworthy.
Certegy Gold applicants have to provide detailed information about themselves, their employers, and their bank, including a voided check. Gold status doesn't cost anything, but members agree to pay a service fee to Certegy each time they write a "dishonored check."
Why would you ask for information already on file with the client's primary Financial Institution? I think that we're all well versed on what happened with the last little incident of customer information being leaked from Certegy with Bank of America clients. Another red flag is the agreement to pay a service fee to Certegy each time a check is dishonored. Again, why would a client agree to give approval to charge a service fee whenever they decide to "dishonor" a check that is indeed valid but the "model" recommends to decline? This is a deceptive way to reap profits for the company. Not unlike exorbitant interest rates and excessive fees.
Based on the number of complaints filed, I would suggest that you have your statisticians re-evaluate their "model". Perhaps enough law suits, Better Business Bureau and Attorney General complaints filed by financially savy individuals who have been "declined because they erroneously fit a fraudulent profile" will end this "fraudulent" income stream for Certegy.

Check Decline
Jonathan-
Thank you for taking the time to contact Best Buy in regards to the recent experiences you have had in our Hickory store location.
Best Buy has chosen to utilize an outside agency, Certegy, to guarantee the checks our customers present as payment. Sometimes Certegy is unable to guarantee a check because it falls outside their guidelines, and our management staff is not able to override this. Please be assured that this in no way reflects your credibility as a consumer. We appreciate your feedback and I will document your concerns into a formal complaint, which will be made available for upper management.
Best Wishes from Best Buy,
Helen and the Consumer Relations Team
Thank you for your response. I, too, intend to contact upper management at BestBuy about my June 16 and 17 experience at BestBuy in Hickory, NC. I spoke with a representative at Certegy on June 17 about the decline of my checks at BestBuy (Reference # 10492919) and for the representative at Certegy to tell me that my checks were declined because my 'PROFILE' fit the profile of a Fraudulent Check Writer, well, that goes way outside a company's guidelines. I have been doing business with BestBuy for over 10 years and my purchase history with them is extensive. I intend to seek advice and/or assistance from the State's Attorney General's office about this experience as well as submitting a complaint to the Better Business Bureau. A local area news station offers a Problem Solver Investigation hotline for matters of this nature and I intend to contact them. Something needs to be done about Certegy Check Services.

CHECK DECLINES
I have been doing business with BestBuy stores for well over ten years. I've written checks for store purchases on different accounts, used ATM and Debit cards to pay for items I have bought and then all of a sudden in just two days (June 16 and 17) Certegy DECLINES my checks to a business I have been doing business with for over 10 years. I contacted Certegy and they informed me that my profile fit the profile of a Fradulent Check Writer. Tell that to BestBuy now that I will no longer make any store purchases from them. Certegy SUCKS! Can't something be done about this outfit? Certegy's customer services is lousy, too. At a time when companies need to be doing everything they can to maintain customer loyalty, they might need to rethink their business model.
Thank you.

Faulty Claim
I am having a problem with Certegy correcting a bill I never owed. I have called them on several occasioins stating that the claim they have placed on my credit report is false. Netflix says I owe them nothing and Certegy can find no bill owed to Netflix. Yet they have not removed thid erroneous blemish on my credit report. Everytime I call them I now get a run around which does not make matters any better.

check denial
On May 2, 2009 I went to my local Sears appliance/hardware store to purchase a lawn mower. I had the crated lawn mower at the cashiers desk and wrote a check for the purchase and to my surprise was told by the cashier that my check was denied by certegy check services. I was told I could call the 800# that was printed on the back of my denied check. I could have made the purchase with a credit, or a debit card or gone to the atm and withdrawn the entire amount in cash, but did not. If Sears couldn't trust me, because they have Certegy check services screening all their checks, than I quess I can't trust Sears. I left the store with the crated lawn mower at the cashiers desk and vowed never to return. Just wrote a letter to Sears holding company to their ceo. Sent a copy of a reciept for a lawn tractor that I purchased from a different hardware store.Hope everyone that gets a denial from certegy check services, for what ever lame reason their computer model shows, takes their business else where. Certegy check services should go the way of the dinosaurs.Tell all your friends not to do business with any business that uses Certegy check services.
