My house was recently burglarized and all of my financial information was stolen...credit cards, debit cards, checks, drivers license, social security card, etc. As you might imagine I've started receiving various collection letters from different agencies who represent the companies where the forged checks has been passed. One particular check was passed at a local 7-11 for $25 dollars. The 7-11 corporation utilizes CERTEGY as their collections agency (among many others) and I received a letter from them (Certegy) requesting VERY sensitive information such as routing number, acct number, other names on acct, drivers license number, photocopy of drivers license for all people on acct, name of my bank, name of police dept and a password??? So I called them...got "Lee" in customer service who seemed nice enough. I told Lee that I did not feel comfortable providing all of this info to CERTEGY...he said "ok" and then told me that I would need to call the "Fraud Dept"...he provided me w/ a different "800" number which I subsequently called. At the new "800" number I was told that I could talk to exciting singles in my area...I hung up and called CERTEGY back...lo and behold, I got Lee again...he apologized for giving me the wrong number and then gave me a different number...I called the number, waited on hold for about 5 minutes and then guess what?...I got Lee AGAIN, I think that he was as surprised as I was. He apologized and told me that he was going to place me on hold while he looked for the right number for the fraud dept...I waited and when he came back on the line he provided me w/ a call ID#...and told me that I would need to speak w/ a supervisor (what happened to the fraud dept?)...so I said "ok". I then got to wait again...this time for about 7 minutes then a man whose name is Quoc (Employee ID#E1036075) came on the line and after repeating the entire story again he informed me that there is NO fraud dept...or rather, there was a fraud dept but that they do NOT take calls from outside customers...he could not explain why Lee was trying to get me to call the fraud dept when he already knew that there was NO phone number that an outside customer could utilize to actually contact their fraud dept. THen he tells me that he cannot help me further because I would need to get my wife to grant me permission to speak for her on the phone (although both of our names are on the checks the criminal was only signing her name)...I told him that it was a joint acct and that my name was also on the checks...he said that he could not help me without speaking with my wife first. I told him that she was from a different country (Chile) and could not speak English very well...he said that he could not help me without speaking to my wife first...I asked him if he had turned into a robot or some type of other automaton...he said that he could not help me without first speaking to my wife. I hung up after getting his employee number...eventually I'll find somebody with whom I can lodge a complaint. Here is the "kicker"...I spoke w/ a Lawyer afterwards about the possibility of bring a suit against Certegy if they block me from using my checks at the different business who employ CERTEGY as their collections agency...he said "maybe"...he recommended registering complaints w/ the BBB and FTC (which I have done) and then trying to talk to somebody in administration for CERTEGY or the 7-11 corporation...still trying to do that. Needless to say, I would NOT give this company any of your valuable, sensitive information...if you've already been victimized once (as in our case) there is no point in getting victimized again (this time from CERTEGY).
