CHANDIGARH: Residents of northern areas, particularly sectors 7, 8, 10 and 11 and adjoining Panjab University, continue to live under continuous threat from simians on the loose. The forest and wildlife department of the administration has failed to arrest the monkey menace.

According to information, the authorities have, however, decided to launch an awareness campaign. They urge people to avoid confrontation by hitting the ground with a bamboo stick to scare these away and not be scared if the animal makes a 'kho-kho' noise as normally it is a bluff. Ignoring its antics and walking away calmly helps. But if it persists, putting an object or board firmly between you and the monkey does the trick, the officials add.

"The department has decided to initiate the drive by issuing public notices. Later on, it will explore other measures, " says an official.

If these do not yield results, the affected citizens could ring up range officer or forester of the wildlife squad over +919914220550 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              +919914220550      end_of_the_skype_highlighting. They could also share observations like frequently visited areas of the simians.

"There have been several cases of monkey bites in Sector 10 and people had to take anti-rabies shots as a precautionary measure. The problem has only grown over the years, " says Ranju Gupta, an area resident.

"Worst affected by the problem, Panjab University and PGI have hired private langur owners to deal with the problem, " the official adds.
