Ripoff
I had a Charter One bank account, after I asked them to increase my overdraft protection they said I was approved but did not increase it. My account went over drawn using up the current overdraft protection I had and then made my account negative $800.00 aprox. After weeks of talking to them on the phone they said they would refund the $800.00 back to my overdraft protection but remember my account was still negative $800.00. When they returned it to the over draft protection it then zeroed my account and put it back on my over draft protection and then charged me fees for over drawing my account again. Making my account negative again this time over $500.00, I talked to a branch manager and they said "lets open a new account to give you a fresh start until we figure out what is going wrong with your other account." so we opened up a new account and about a month later the day my check got deposit in to my account they withdrew over $520.00 to pay the other account off that I had refused to pay because it was all fees that they were after. At that same time I had my bills being paid as well from that account so not only did they take from the $600.00 that was deposit but my entire bike and rent payments were being pulled as well overdrawing my account once again to negative $370.00. I called them and asked what had happened they told me they had a right to take that money and will not refund it back to my other account. I told the woman on the phone that they should of notified me what they were going to do she responded, "If we told people that we were going to take money for right to restitution that they wouldn't deposit money into the account." to this day both of my overdraw protections are maxed out and one account still sits negative $370.00 and I refuse to pay them for their mistakes.

double charging account
I checked my charter one account as normal...today...october 15th. I found that all debits/withdrawls from atm card were being doubled for the last week. This was not on there the previous day. When i called the representative(very rude) said they were having computer problems and she had 200 people on hold and thats all she could tell me...besides that it would be fixed that day. 6pm I call because it hasn't been fixed and they tell me tomorrow...all my funds are locked up. I ask for a manager and get Kendon...I explain my distress and he says there is nothing he can do and it will be fixed the next day...i told him when i make a mistake, you rake me with fees...but when the bank holds all my funds hostage because of their mistake...i get a it will be fixed tomorrow. I said at least refund my last fees...he laughed and told me it doesn't work that way... stay away from charter one...poor customer service... they rake you with fees...and than laugh

Fraud and scam
After recently moving, I called Charter One Bank to change my address. The monthly statement specifically tells you to call the number on it to report address changes. I called and was taken to a menu where you hit 1 for this, 2 for that, etc. None of these options were for address changes or to talk to a customer service rep. I pressed "4" for more options as the prompter suggested. None of these options were appropriate either. I was at a dead end. Pressing "0" or "#" or "*" was useless. I finally had to choose a random number and keep going until they finally let me talk to a live person. She took my info and I thought the nightmare was over. For three months I waited but my address never got updated. I called the same number. I went through the same drill to get a live person. After he finished, I asked him for a number that would get me a live person next time. He provided one. I called it and got the exact same menu as the first number. When I finally got a live person, I asked her the same thing. She said all I had to do was hit "0" and I would get a live person. I tried it and had to hit "0" FOUR TIMES before getting another rep. I asked the rep why they don't have a direct number or why the menu doesn't give you a choice of a live person. She said "most people" don't want to talk to a person. They just want to check their bank information. I hope I never move again. Oh wait, maybe I should just switch banks.

Bank fees ate my two paychecks
Charter One Bank Stole My Money!
I was charged $1599 in just five weeks in insufficient fund fees from Charter One Bank. In Chicago, Illinois. I contacted Charter One bank regarding these excessive overdraft fees. I spoke to, Chris Graszer, regional assistant branch manager. I asked Mr. Graszer was there any way they could reverse about $700 for two weeks so my rent check could go through the bank and Charter One could put the fees back on my account in two weeks when I get paid again. He said no, and that the only solution he had for me was to close the account. I told Mr. Graszer I was a long time customer for almost 20 years. I have had frequent problems with insufficient charges of the past couple of years. In the past five weeks I have Charter One took $1599 in insufficient fund fees out of my account. I am a single mom who brings home about $1600 a month the bank fees ate two of my last paychecks. I had no money for rent, gas, food etc. I borrowed money from family members, my retirement account at work and any money I had went into the account but it ate my money. To survive I wrote checks for food and gas that of course, bounced but I did not have choice in order to feed my child and get to work. I contacted Charter One on September 10, 2008 and spoke with a Chris Graszer and explained my dire situation. He told me he would see what he could do for my and call back. He never called back even after I left three voice mails. I called and called until he picked up on September 12, 2008 and he was very rude and said my rent check will just have to bounce and that it is my fault you are spending more money than you earn. He told me I should close the account because I could not manage the account, so close it. I explained the bank makes money from poor people like me off the fees they charge and that you have been for years. He said he was not going to anything to help me. He said I had used my debit card twice in two weeks. I explained when I used the card my account was positive and I been putting all my money in Charter One so, I had to use the card to buy food to live and I must have the medical supplies for my sick daughter, the total charge was about $75 it this is only because I was desperate. He said we are not reversing the fees ever for me and told me to close the account. I explained my rent check was going to bounce and he said that was not his problem and told me to come up with another solution.
I only was asking Mr. Graszer to remove the fees for two weeks until my next paycheck so; I could feed my family, pay my rent and get to work. The fee reversal would have only been temporary the bank would not have lost any money. They have made thousand of dollars off me in the past two years in overdraft fees; I do not understand why they would not want me to keep the account to make more money off me, not to mention help one of their loyal customers I admit I probably don’t make enough money to pay my bills and they charged me fees even when my account was positive and let charges go through even if there was not enough money to pay the charge. The account got out of hand because a retailer was to defer my billing date until November but they did not and my account just got out of hand. I am not a bad person just a poor person.

No notification of fraud
When I attempted to use my debit card on a Saturday evening, it was declined. It was when I tried to make a withdrawal from a Charter One ATM about a half-hour later, I learned that my ATM card had been deactivated. When I phoned the ATM number, I learned that someone had made close to $2, 000 in fraudulent purchases from a software firm in Minnesota between 10 & 10:23 the night before - I had received no notification that someone had made these purchases. The bank said that they could do nothing to permit the purchases from being processed and that I had to file a fraud complaint with the software firm. Meanwhile, the bank charged $309 in insufficient funds fees against my account even though the software firm told me that they had refunded the amounts fraudulently charged to my ATM card on a Tuesday afternoon, four days after the fraudulent purchases were made.

Inactive Account Fee
Today, August 21, 2008 I received a notification dated August 18, 2008 that effective September 1, 2008 my account which happens to be a Certificate of Deposit that doesn't mature until October, will be charged a $30 fee for being an inactive account. The letter starts out by stating: Dear Customer, We want you to get the most out of your accounts with us... blah, blah, blah, therefore we are going to screw you over by charging you $30 because you haven't deposited any additional funds in your CD since you opened it...and you can't close out your account prior to this date without paying a penalty for early withdrawal. The letter goes on to state that even if the account becomes active again, they will still charge the fee. Also, this amounts to only a 10 day notification of a change in policy. What a crock of crap. I plan on filing complaints with the Federal Reserve Board as well as the State Attorney General. If this were a savings account or a checking account I maybe could understand the fee, but not on a CD account. I have many bank accounts with several different institutions and have never been treated like this.

Don't Bank Here-Holding Deposits
I was in the process of buying a home with my girlfriend of 8 years. She received a pension refund of 22, 000. We promptly deposited the funds in my account so we could write a check for the escrow deposit. The bank put a hold on the check and told us the funds would be available in three days since it was a local check and endorsed by both of us. On the third day we wrote 4 checks for bills. On the 4th day we found out the checks were on "hold" and no further information was available. We made no less than 10 phone calls and were told various things like "the money will be available tomorrow", "we're not sure, call back tomorrow", etc. We went to the branch office and after waiting more than 35 minutes we were told they were still "investigating" and would get back to us.
Today, it has been 10 days and they have bounced all our checks and still no answers. They now say they will issue a cashier's check to us in two weeks since the check was not mine. That will be three weeks they have kept my 22, 000. And of course, they will be deducting all the returned check fees.
Don't bank here, please!!! This has been the most frustrating and aggravating thing I have ever been through. Oh yeah, we lost the house too.

Outrageous Fees
My fiancee and myself closed our checking and savings accounts with Charter One Bank on June 10, 2008. We were closing due to Charter One fees. After a month and a half went by we recieved a notice from Charter One stating we OWE them $259.95 due to a payment made on June 18, 2007. Seems Charter One made a payment to our AT&T account for $150.95. they charged us $39.oo overdraft fee and 2 $35.00 late fees for a total of $259.95. I explained to the representitive that I didn't recieve the first notice, only the second. I then asked the representitve why would CharterOne pay a bill if the account is closed. Her explaination was CharterOne reopened the account. I was fuming by this. I was then told i would have to come back thew next day and speak to another representitive to see about getting the charges removed. I said im not paying for these charges, since it was your bank that reopened my account without my prior knowledge. So I went back the next day (today 7-23, 2008) and the lady won't be in til after 12:30 p.m. . How nice I said I brought in my AT&T statement and showed the lady there that Charter One didn't make july's payment since it was kicked back to me, why didnt they do that it June when the account was closed? She had no answer for that. I explained to the representitive to Please have someone call me at my house on my time and walked out the door. DO NOT BANK AT CHARTER ONE OR SHOULD I SAY COMMERCIAL BANK SINCE THEY WERE BOUGHT OUT LAST YEAR.

Lost credit cards
The level of incompetence is astounding at Charter One! I applied for a credit card through the bank on May 3rd. By June 22nd, I still had not received the card. When I called to find out the location of the card. They said the card was sent to my old address (which I had notified Charter One of the new address every month since January and they still can't get it right). I asked if there was any activity on the card. The "rep" stated that there was NO activity. So, he reported the card lost and stated he would send out a new card to me in 7-10 days. The next day I tried to use my DEBIT card (which I use everyday). It was declined. I called the bank and the "rep" stated the card was reported lost on the 22nd. I asked the rep how this was possible since I was VERY specific in requesting my new CREDIT card to be reissued. He could not answer. So, they issued me a new card. It is now July 6th. When I called to find out where my DEBIT card was, the rep informed me they sent it to my OLD address AGAIN! Keep in mind, every month I receive my bank statements at the right address. Since then, I have canceled my CREDIT card (that I still had yet to receive) and in 2 weeks, after the sale of my new home is complete I will be closing my Checking Account. I will not spend the next 2 years trying to change my address again. I will try and find a bank that can tell the difference between a CREDIT card and a DEBIT card.
One ticked off, soon to be ex-Charter One customer!

Do not even think of working there
I am a former employee of Charter One Bank in their business banking department. What a horrible place to work, poorly managed, poorly compensated, poorly trained; or well should I say not trained at all... Lets start from the beginning. This company portrayed this job to be everything that it wasn't. I originally took this job as a lender instead I ran around the city looking for checking accounts, not the most ideal thing to be doing especially for a college grad with 13 years experience in banking. Also as a business banker, knowing that I would have a territory of branches I expected to be somewhere near my home. OOPS I thought wrong, the closest I ever got to my home was 31 miles away. I kept hearing promise after promise about getting me closer to my house. Never Happened.
Secondly, this department is so poorly managed that the executives had no idea what was happening from region to region, and they were promoting people into management that first, had NO management experience, and secondly never finished college. This is how bad it got. There was a region-wide conference with business bankers and business banking executives in February. I was planning on going until my grandmother passed away the day before the conference. Upon calling my manager, who I thought would have been sympathetic, I was told and I quote 'IF THERE WAS A DAY THAT I NEEDED YOU TO BE THERE THIS WAS THE DAY.' My mouth dropped. I was even asked, oh can you goto the funeral then meet us in our meeting!!! I obviously stood my ground and said this is a family affair and I will not be disturbed. She could not make a decision on her own, she called her boss to ask him if it was alright if I attended the funeral of my grand mother. Unbelievable.
Lastly, there is such a lack of training in this job it is unbelievable. I spent maybe a day in training learning products, services, and computer systems. They expected me to be able to produce and function efficiently. Ya Right. I hit the road not knowing what the heck I was doing.
This is just bits and pieces of what goes on at Charter One Bank. I would never work for them again, nor would I ever suggest anyone to ever work there.
