Chase Bank Credit Card Reviews

DECEPTIVE BAIT AND SWITCH TACTIC
My boyfriend had a credit card from Chase Bank a few years back. One evening they called him and told him that since he was such good customer he had earned a credit of $500 to be received as credit to his card or in a check. Apparently they had a case back bonus program and the $500 was his bonus. I overheard the conversation and he asked them three times if this money was free and clear, which they assured him was the case. It was his to spend any way he wished because he had earned this credit.

He spent it as a credit to his account. A couple of months later he noticed a $500 charge to his account at which point he called them to question the charge. They told him that they had errored - his bonus should only have been $50, not $500. He complained and asked to speak with a supervisor. The supervisor said it was their error but be still needed to pay it back. He went on to claim that they had sent him a letter explaining they had errored, which they had not, and that he was obligated to pay back the "bonus" that had assured him was his to spend free and clear.

I told him not to pay it, that he should fight the charge, but he insisted on paying it so that they wouldn't charge him any additional late fees, which they had already charged him as a result of receiving and spending the $500 bonus.

I notified the state Attorney General and anyone I could find that helped consumer complaints but nobody ever responded. They are thieves and should be criminally liable for this kind of practice. I am curious to know if others have experienced this same practice.

Unfair Credit Determination
I was a chase bank customer w/ 3 accounts (2 credit cards & 1 auto loan). I have been extremely diligent & consistant w/ paying all accounts on time. I was never late w/ one payment & often paid balances in full on the credit cards. A few weeks ago, Chase decided that because I co-signed on a loan over a year (which account has never defaulted) & had a bankruptcy over 9 years ago that they were going to cancel one credit card & lower my credit limit on the other from $5, 000 to $500. All of which go against my credit history & lower my credit score... I spoke to Chase customer service reps 3x & they acknowledged that I have maintained a perfect payment history on all accounts, have had co-signed loan for over a year w/ NO difficulties w/ payment, I was issued the cards 5 years ago w/ a flawless payment history but they consider me "too" much of a risk and decided to lower my credit card limit and cancel 1 account. (Not to mention since that bankruptcy in 2001 I have been flawless on ALL debt & accounts- Not 1 negative account since then). My credit score was 810 & has now dropped to 706. I'm anxious to pull my credit report next month to see any comments on those accounts. My point to my complaint is that despite them already having previous knowledge of my bankruptcy when the issued me cards, having an exceptional payment history (paid them $19, 700 in 2009 w/ NO problem always paying at least 5x more then min. payment if not paying total balance), NO derogatory history in over 9 years on any account... they decided I was a risk & took action which damaged my credit score. In my opinion they are a horrible lending agency penalizing individuals when they haven't even defaulted on anything... I just closed my surviving $500 credit card & I'm now looking to refinance my auto loan w/ another lender... will I NEVER DO BUSINESS w/ Chase AGAIN!!! I've read so many complaints about Chase... Consumer BEWARE!!!

Robbing people using late fee
Be aware of Chase bank using late fee to rob you. Normal practice for those credit card company regarding late fee is that they will waive for once or twice as a curtesy. Not true for Chase bank. If Chase bank do not follow the normal practice of industry, they should put it in front so that people will know if and choose not using their credit card. Whatever the attractive give-back they are having in their credit card offering, they will get it back by getting your late fee. It is $39. You can feel how desperate for them to make some money out of the late fee. When I called about taking off the late fee as a curtesy. The supervisor said that they will bankrupt if they do it for everybody. How so? Just try to make money in the right way, Chase bank. It is shame for such big company to make money this way. Very distasteful. I see that other people have the same complaints. They do not tell their customers about late fee policy. We need to. We will stop using it for sure. The phone call remindes me of how greedy they are and not decent at all.

Late Fee
I have recently closed my credit card due to the unsatisfactory service and a late fee accessed on my account which I believe should not have been charged.

I usually make all my payments early and more than the minimum payment amount required. My statement with due date 8-3-09 did not have any disclosure of a payment increase. The statement with due date of 9-3-09 only indicated:

Please note you have a new payment due date that has been
extended to give you more time to pay. The new payment due
date is reflected on this statement. If you prefer to select
a payment due date that better meets your needs,
please call Customer Service.

On 8-10-09 I made my usual budgeted amount of $100 to the account.

On 8-14-09 I sent an email via the Chase.com secure mail asking why my payment had increased to $127.00 from $52.00 the past month. I was prompted to send this email as I had no notification of such a change to date.

On 9-3-09 I was assessed a late fee of $39.00 for being late, even though I had made the payment on 8-10-09, and no explanation as to why the mailed statement had an increase minimum payment increase.

On 9-5-09 I contacted the credit card 800 number only to received a very blunt explanation of “you were late and I cannot do anything about the late fee.” I found this individual rude and inflexible when trying to present my point. After being told I was “talking in circles” I asked to speak with a supervisor. I was transferred to Sherry J in Springfield, MO. While she was much more professional and I have no complaint other than she indicated that the only way she could refund the late fee was if it was a bank error.

So I closed my account and will continue to close my accounts with Chase at which time I am financially able.

I received no notice of the increased payment amount, if I had an additional $27.00 on 8-10-09 to avoid the $39.late fee charge on 9-3-09 wouldn’t be the issue. I had already made the payment the day after the statement was cut. It wasn’t a matter of money or intentional payment shortage I had already paid the monthly payment. The inability of the bank I have used for many years and have maintained my commitments in a favorable manner---cannot lend itself to refunding a $39.00 fee. If this is what Chase Bank has come to, I’ll find a local bank.

Terrible bank
Chase bank may have possibly broken predatory lending laws by reneging on their agreements with probable thousands of customers like me who accepted their generous offer of low interest for the life of the balance card deals. They have decided that the life is up.

They offered their customers 3.9% life of the balance loans on credit cards years ago. Now, after paying for many years at the agreed rate they have changed the plan and added a $10 monthly 'transaction fee' when no transaction was requested nor accepted, which makes the effective APR go to 6.5% . A figure they felt they could live with. As min payment shrinks the effective APR rises under the new accounting. When the amount paid is $10 the addition of a $10 transaction fee will make the effective APR 100%/month or 1200%/year!

They also decided to change the min payment from 2% of the unpaid balance to 5% of the unpaid balance. They told me, in a phone call, that they could take off the monthly service charge if I sign a new contract and agree to 7%. Isn't that extortion- adding a charge and offering to remove it for agreeing to higher interest?

Consumer affairs web site is full of similar complaints from scores of angry customers. At least one class action suit has been filed against them.

Could they change it again and increase the service fee to $1000/month and make the minimum payment 25% of the unpaid balance? They must not be allowed to change the terms of the original agreement.

We need an injunction on them barring any changes to the original contract that was to be in place for the life of the balance until a court can decide whether or not is legal for them to breech the contract, by changing the payments and effective APR.

The worst bank to do business with!
To whom it may concern,

I am, upset with chase bank i have 2 credit cards with them about year and half a go i had some financial problems per chase bank i enrolled in a credit counseling program the credit counseling has be a great help i enrolled my credit cards and they have lower my finance charges and lowered my monthly payments but chase bank who recommend them would not accept me in the program i tried to pay chase on my own but they kept charging higher interest and late fees i couldn't make the minimum payments. Then out of blue chase bank calls to see if i wanted to get on a reage program the rep from chase was very nice and understanding and wanted to help i thought great maybe everything was looking up i agree with chase to make 3 convective payments for each account one account was $115 and another account was $100 i did this for 3 months in doing this chase said they would stop late fees and bring my accounts current and my minimum would be around $50 for each account i received a letter stating that i was in a reage program i called chase to see what my payments would be and they said was past due and minimum due was $152 and another was $107 i could understand why and the rep at chase said that the minimum went up and so the reage was voided according to the rep when i was setup everything was okay but they did not realize that they were going to raise the minimum. I couldn't understand it. The rep was only saying they were sorry about it and there was nothing they could do about. I think chase bank is the worst bank to do business with. They send you a letter stating that a completed the payment process and i am in a reage program but they don't have a record of me getting such a letter. Its business like chase bank drowning us into debt with high interest rates its funny they offer new customers 0% interest rates but to help out existing customers with lower interest they don' care. Thank you.

Fraudulent billing
I received an Amazon credit card from Chase Bank and promptly used it to purchase less than $100 in merchandise. For several months, I received no bills from Chase. My first bill included interest and penalties. I promptly paid for the merchandise but refused to pay for the interest and penalty charges because I did not receive a timely bill. Chase has refused to remove the interest and penalties and continues to pile up $15 in monthly penalties and interest.

This is not my first unsatisfactory experience with Chase and would not have applied for the Amazon card had I known it was really through Chase.

Deceptive trade practices
I have been a long term customer of Chase Bank both with business and personal accounts. My account was setup to auto pay each month. October 2006 I made a purchase that went over my credit limit but was approved by Chase, who then promptly changed (without notice) the interest rate from 5.99% APR to 29.99%.

In my opinion there should never be an over limit situation because they should not approve charges that would exceed the credit limit. I feel Chase Banks actions, which emulate most credit card venders, are deceptive in nature and my qualify by the current Federal Trade Commission rules as deceptive trade practices.
