I just found out, as apparently other have as well, that Chase is now charging a $10/month 'service' fee on top of what they agreed was a fixed low interest rate (3.99% in my case). This effectively raises my interest rate to about 5 1/2%. In addition, they have increased my monthly payment almost three-fold (which may make it difficult in the current economic climate for me to qualify on debt to income ratio in refinancing my home--to take advantage of low mortgage rates). Their ploy is that they will take away the $10 service fee and reinstate my previous monthly payment amount, if I agree to double the interest rate on my outstanding $8, 000 debt to 7.99%!
They claim the are following the letter of the fine print in the agreement, but it is clear to me that they are ethically and most likely, legally, violating the agreement as it was initially publicized to me, in order to get my business. This is clearly fraud.
I am very interested in actively pursuing this matter--not only for my own self-interest, but because it is time for us hard-working American people to stand up for our rights in the face of corporate greed and rip-offs. Banks like Chase can take bail out monies (our tax dollars), distribute some of the funds to their high paid executives, use the monies to buy pharmaceutical companies and the like to increase their profits, and still continue to hoard money rather than providing loans to hard working American people who need money to get buy during these difficult times. On top of it all, those of us who are responsibly paying off our debts, are now finding the rules being changed by Chase in mid-stream--in order to further bail this Bank out of its own difficult circumstances.
Maybe we should be charging them a service fee whenever we make our payments on time, and deduct this service fee from our principal balance!!
I hope some socially responsible lawyer will contact me and others to start a class action suit. I will also be contacting my local Congressperson whom I know will be very concerned about this matter, and looking into other avenues for recourse--not just to help myself financially, but to take a stand against such unilateral, unethical and illegal corporate actions.

I searched the internet for the best deal on visa card rebates and found Chase Bank USA, N.A. offered a 3% rebate on visa card purchases. Or, at least, 3% on your top 3 spending categories for the month, the rest of the purchases provided a 1% rebate.
This sounded like a great idea to me, after all, I have an excellent credit rating, always pay my balance in full by the due date, and Capital One was only giving me a 1% rebate, so why not? I applied at Chase and was immediately approved and obtained a $9500 credit limit. This was several months ago.
Well, the time had come and I decided to actually redeem my 'points'. I signed into my account on line and found I was having a little trouble finding how to 'redeem' my 'points'. There were plenty of ways to redeem points for purchases from companies such as blockbuster, red lobster, the gap, starbucks, avis, sea world, ECT...however; I could not see how to apply my 'points' as a credit to my account, as I had always done with Capital One. No doubt, red lobster and star bucks are fine companies, and I sometimes purchase things from all these company's, however, I just wanted the 'points' to be applied as a credit.
After much searching for a phone number on CHASE banks website I actually got through to a 'live' person. Be advised it took me almost 10 minutes of searching on the chase cc website for an actual customer service phone number.
When I did finally have a customer service rep answer she acted as if she had never heard of any one applying their 'points' to their balance before. I felt as if I was talking to someone from the planet Vulcan.
Well, after much time and confusion the customer service rep advised me that she would have to transfer me over to a 'credit card specialist'. Someone who could see if CHASE could provide me with a 'points' redemption plan similar to the one I was dreaming about.
After much waiting I finally accessed the 'credit card specialist' who was paid to hear my sad story of how I didn't want to use my points to buy over priced stuff from stores who paid CHASE for the advertising privilege. I just wanted to apply my 3% rebate 'points' to my account. The 'specialist' acted like it was a very rare request but that she did understand me now. I think she could now understand that I simply wanted the 'CASH MONEY'.
The 'specialist' advised me it might take a few months to get all the particulars worked out. She didn't mention the name of the 'new plan' or explain to me why I might have missed checking that special box when I first applied, however, I was confident that I was at now on my way to receiving a 3% cash rebate which I could apply to my balance. I evidently didn't look in the right place on the initial application when I first enrolled in the CHASEFREEDOM plan. I must have been thinking of the 'Planet Vulcan Plan" or something ... you know, the plan that lets you simply apply your 'points' to your credit card balance?
So the specialist evidently did her job because after a few short weeks I received a REJECTION LETTER from CHASE Bank stating that I was denied access to their 'visa signature credit program' (Must be the secret name for their cash rebate plan) because I have too many loan accounts opened. This is hilarious to me because I have no debt and an 880 credit score. This is from the same company that approved me 6 months ago before I realized that I was enrolling in the plan that offered 3% back on overpriced items from vendors which CHASE bank had an advertising revenue stream with.
I am just glad I found out early that the CHASE FREEDOM 3% rebate program is a joke.

I HAD NEVER RECEIVED A CREDIT CARD FROM CHASE #4388 5760 2631 9825 WHICH SHOWED ON MY CREDIT REPORT FROM EQUIFAX, TRANSUNION AND EXPERIAN THAT I HAD A 60 DAYS LATE.
I ALREADY SENT THE COMPLAINS TO CHASE BANK THEY SAID THAY WILL SEND TO THE CREDIT BUREAU TO FIX THIS PROBLEM, SINCE THE KNOW THAT I HAD NEVER RECEIVED THAT CARD. BUT UNTIL NOW EQUIFAX AND TRANSUNION STILL HAD THIS PROBLEM ON FILE, EVEN EXPERIAN
ALREADY CLEARED THIS BAD ITEM FROM AFTER RECEIVING MY LETTER.
I THOUGHT WHEN YOU DID HAVE A BAD ITEM IN YOUR CREDIT, ALL 3 CREDIT REPORTS HAD THEM IN THEIR RECORDS, THEN WHEN A BAD ITEM HAD BEEN CLEARED FROM ONE CREDIT BUREAU THE OTHERS SHOULD HAVE THE BAD ITEM CLEARED FOR YOU TOO, WHY THE DID NOT DO THAT,
THEN YOU HAVE TO SEND TO 3 DIFFERENT COMPANIES FOR THE SAME ITEM TO BE CLEARED?
PLEASE HELP ME TO CLEAR MY CREDIT FOR SOMETHING I DID NOT DO.
THANKS,
SINCERELY,

Fraudulent activity
After having a BP gas card for over 20 years (back when it was an Amoco Card), Chase Bank has decided to charge me $25 a year for the 'privilege' of filling up my car with BP gas. If I convert it to a BP VISA then there is no annual fee. An annual fee on a gas card?!? Dumbest thing I have ever heard.
Not only have you lost a credit customer of 20+ years, but our family will not be obtaining gas at any BP ever again, not to mention the frequent stops for drinks/snacks. I hope the fee was worth it.
CHECK THOSE STATEMENTS IF YOU HAVE A 'PLAIN OL' GAS CARD!!!

I am sick to my stomach today when A bank who gave me an offer for the life of my balance for 3.99% if I transfered a balance to them. I accepted this term and was also offered to 'write myself a check' for the life of the balance of 4.99%. I accepted these offers a few years ago and used some of the money to pay off another loan and do some work to my home.
I now have a balance of $9, 000.00 of which I have always paid more than the minimum payment and always paid on time. I was sick to see my January statement show double the minimum payment plus an $10.00 transaction fee! I called and was advised that Chase changed the terms and I could stay with the current terms or accept an offer of 7.99% until January 2011 after that it will be variable!
I advised her I have NEVER not paid on my account and have always paid on time. I don't understand how Chase can just change the terms of what I originally accepted and I stayed within the terms of the agreement. I was basically given the option to pay the $10.00 fee every month with 2% of the balance for the minimum payment or accept the 7.99% offer.
I have great credit and have never been late or not paid Any bill! I am getting penalized for being a good customer and paying my bill!! I guess they are not making enough money on be because i have not been late so they could not change my apr but went ahead and did it any way!
I had no choice and accepted the 7.99% but will be shopping for a new company to pay that off! stay away from Chase! They will change the terms when they do not make enough money off you. I will NEVER do business with Chase ever again!!! All I can hope is that there will be some great class action suit against them!

HOW CHASE BANK AND COLUMBIA HOUSE STOLE CHRISTMAS
On August 8, 2008 I purchased some DVDs from Columbia House, the order came to $35.84. The order was shipped missing an item after many emails and phone calls to them I finally got my remaining item but they charged me an additional three times for that one item. After another round of calls and emails I finally chalked it up to a bad experience that I would learn a lesson from.
On October 11.2008 I logged into my checking account to find that I had two pending charges of $99.76 from Columbia House! I immediately called Chase Bank 800 where I spoke to a wonderful supervisor Pat, whom advised that as they were still pending she had been able to reverse them. As a caution she advised that they could submit again as long as they had my card number and provided me the number to the Chase Claims Department.
Immediately I began trying to contact Columbia House via their email process on their website - to this day they have NEVER responded to the dozens of emails that I have sent regarding this issue. Calls are answered by someone not qualified to handle the matter, so a supervisor will need to return your call and that NEVER happens either.
I tried to remove my card information from their site, which the site does not allow you to do! You also can not remove the check mark in the box allowing them to use that information for any future shipments and charges! In frustration I changed the billing information on the card to Big Bird, 123 Sesame Street, New York NY 10001
On October 14, 2008 they again debited my checking account for $99.76 which resulted in CHASE Bank charging me $75.00 and $32.00 for insufficient funds fees.
I contacted CHASE Bank filed a claim and closed that debit card (as they would not file the claim other wise). I provided them with screen shots showing no purchases, no shipments, no pending orders since the August fiasco and was advised by Angel that CHASE Bank would be crediting back the charge and any related insufficient funds fees.
Initially they did credit back the $99.76 and the $75.00 for insufficient funds. CHASE refused to credit the $32.00 as Donnell advised me because a previous request had been made (the $75.00) within a 12-month period.
On November 20, 2008 CHASE bank reversed themselves and took the $99.76 and the $75.00 from my checking account again. I contacted CHASE Claims Department on 11.21.2008 and was advised by Judy that she would re-open the claim and I would receive that information shortly. Several hours later there was still no information received. Again I contacted CHASE claims where upon Andre advised me that I would need to speak with a supervisor whom was currently on another call and would need to call me back.
To date there has been no communication from Judy or Andre’s supervisor, maybe CHASE has Columbia House train the employees in their Claims Department!
Thanks to Grinches at COLUMBIA HOUSE and CHASE BANK there will be no Christmas in our household this year. The theft of over $200.00 from my account by these two supposedly reputable companies has ended any possibility of a celebration of any kind in my household
BE WARNED AND TAKE YOUR BUSINESS ANYWHERE ELSE

Student Loans
Here's my nightmarish story about an attempt (still in progress) at getting a student loan.
In August of 2008, I found out that the financial aid I was to receive through my school was 1/4 what my need was as determined by the school. The school financial aid counselor told me that because of the credit crunch/crisis, they just hadn't received the funds they had needed to fulfill what I needed. So I decided to take the private credit route.
I first submitted my application with Chase online at the end of August. It is now the end of October and the end is nowhere in view.
The first indication of a problem was the right after I sent in my promissory note. I'd been told by their 800 number contact that once I faxed in my promissory note, it would take 5-7 days and they'd have my check sent out. Three weeks later, no check had arrived, so I called them up. I was told that for some reason, my loan had "gotten lost in the pile" and they'd rush to have it reviewed. One week later, I called to check on the status and they told me I had additional documents I had to send in; this first time it was a simple correction on my promissory note. One week after that I called to check the status and I had some more things to send in, this time I needed to send in proof of my permanent address. So I faxed that in and again waited. One week later, another phone call and, you guessed it, one more thing to send in.
This back and forth has now gone into the fifth round of just one more document they need. When I called tonight, not only did they tell me that I have to send in another document, but I have to get proof from my registrars office at the university to show that the amount I requested is a legitimate amount to pay for school. So now, all of a sudden, the amount I'd been approved for over 2 months ago is now in question and for all I know, they are going to deny the amount requested, assuming that after I send in the next document they need that nothing else is needed.
Bottom line, I am going to be changing banks. The customer service has been awful. The reps do not know the process of their banking loan process and can't answer simple questions like WHY DID YOU TELL ME THE FIRST TIME ALL THE DOCUMENTS I HAD TO SEND IN!!! So here I am, more then half way through this semester and I haven't received my much needed loan yet.
My recommendation is that you really get all your ducks in a row before applying for a student loan with Chase, then pull out your .308 rifle and blow them to pieces and go with another bank.

Run by Thieves
TAKE THIS AS A WARNING!
Chase Bank wants much more than to hold your money - this greedy, unprofessional company wants to STEAL your hard earned cash!
If you must bank with Chase, be ready to pay ridiculous fees and charges, and to deal with an unprofessional team of individuals seriously lacking in Customer Service.
Incident 1: I accrued overdraft fees because I didn't realize that my debit card worked when I didn't have available funds in the account - also, I would find out later, balance inquiries are inaccurate.
After calling Chase's 1-800 number, a gentlemen pointed out to me that that was not always the case, and it usually "depends on the vendor." He offered a one-time courtesy waive of the overdraft charge and recommended I use balance inquiries on my phone and computer.
Incident 2: After using balance inquiries, I only made purchases I knew I had money for according to those inquiries. When I had about $20 left, I stopped using my card for a few days. Then I checked my balance again, and it was negative! All these transactions came through on a day I didn't even use my card --- worse, I was charged a $32 overdraft PER INDIVIDUAL TRANSACTION.
Yes, that means that if you use your card for 6 individual $1 transactions, YOU CAN BE CHARGED $192.00 OVERDRAFT FEE!!!
When I pointed out that I was informed by a Chase Telephone Banker to use balance inquiries to "stay on top of" what I had, and as a result accrued fees because I wasn't told that balance inquiries were usually inaccurate if you use your debit card frequently, I was told that "I should have used a transaction register, " "you use your debit card, I don't use your card for you, " and - the biggest surprise to me ... when I asked ...
"How is it worth it for me to stay with Chase Bank when I am being charged in fees as much as a I put in?"
the telephone banker responded,
Chase Bank "is not for everybody."
I guess I don't make enough money to be part of your big-time bank.
After making three phone calls asking for someone, anyone to help, I finally spoke to the one decent person who seems to work there ("Eduardo") who pointed out that Chase can waive fees for transactions below $3.00! That alone saved me $74.00 --- why did only the third person I spoke to inform me of this policy??
I have to support two people on a very in NYC, where the cost of living is quite high, and Chase Bank (in my opinion) *intentionally* mislead me into accruing more fees so they could make a profit off of my naivety. Never again.
Incident 3: I pay my fees and withdraw my latest paycheck, leading to a $0.00 balance and request to close my account as a result of all the fees I had accrued.
"Sure, I'd be glad to help you with that, sir, although there is a $25.00 fee for closing your account within three months of opening it."
I almost shat a gold brick when he said that. Are you kidding me? You *must* be kidding me.
I called another three times and spoke to several other people to ensure that I would not be charged any additional fees.
Additional Info: I spoke to 3 other people who have Chase and are having the same problem, one of them a young girl in High School that I work with that didn't even understand what was going on!!
Chase Bank is absolutely ruthless, and they *will* rob you if give them the chance. Just by opening an account, you have given them the opportunity to charge ridiculous fees.
I asked "How do you justify a $200.00 fee for $20.00 overdrawn?"
The tele-banker who told that Chase "isn't for everyone" told me "it's like a loan, sir."
So I asked her, "What $20.00 loan accumulates $200.00 interest in a week and a half?"
DO NOT BANK WITH CHASE!
If your lucky enough to live on the East Coast, bank with Commerce. Never charged me a fee greater than a $15.00 min. balance fee --- mind you, that was after a 1-year grace period of no fees. They also offered to waive the fee for an additional year if I close me account and reopen it.
Chase = Thieves. Save yourself the frustration.
