False advertising on 2011 truck tow ratings
Dec. 2010 I decided to purchase a truck with the plans of purchasing a fifth wheel toyhauler shortly after. I started to research trucks and their towing capacity. I have always been partial to Chevrolet so I went to a chevrolet dealership here in Arizona, and started looking through the General Motors (GM) marketing catalogs in the dealerships showroom. I was trying to decide between a 4WD 3500HD SINGLE REAR WHEEL truck or the 4WD 3500HD DUAL REAR WHEEL truck. The catalog stated that the SRW could tow a max cap of 21500 lbs and it stated that DRW could tow 21700 lbs. So I decided that a 200 lb difference wasn't very much so I purchased the 4WD 3500HD SRW truck because I like the looks better. I was satisfied with my choice and then started shopping for a fifth wheel. I purchased my fifth wheel in Jan. 2011. The max cap on my fifth wheel is 18000 lbs. So I was very comfortable towing it because I thought my truck could haul 21500 lbs. A few days after the purchase of my fifth wheel I pulled out my owners manual for my truck to read about towing and discovered that my truck can only actually haul 16800 lbs. I brought this to the attention of the dealership and they agreed that there was a discrepancy. They advised me to contact GM and try to see if there could be a resolution. GM would do nothing so I went back to the dealership and talked with the sales mgr. and he said they would see about contacting GM on my behalf. 3+months have passed now and GM has presented me with a couple different offers but they want me to pay out more money to them to get into a vehicle that can tow my fifth wheel safely, but I don't feel like I should have to pay for their mistakes. My main complaint and concern is that I have a vehicle that I can safely tow my fifth wheel with, and I hope that no one gets injured because of GM's marketing mistakes! Towing something to heavy is not only illegal but it puts peoples lives at risk! I wonder how many others are out there that have been mislead by GM marketing materials.
