A leopard was shot dead after it allegedly attacked some farm workers at Lohinga Kalan village in Punhana block of the district today. According to police sources and eyewitnesses, a leopard attacked Talim, Khurshid and Maqsood of the village, who were working in their fields in the lap of the Aravalli hills this afternoon. Talim was badly injured in the head, face, neck and torso, while Khurshid and Maqsood were also hurt in the attack. Villagers came to the rescue of the trio and tried to overpower the leopard with sticks and farm implements. Fearing threat to their lives, some villagers shot the leopard. The injured were rushed to Al-Afia Hospital at Mandi Khera. Later, District Forest Officer SS Dahiya, along with other administrative and police officials, reached the scene and took possession of the leopard’s carcass. The officials said it seemed that the leopard had strayed from Sariska forests in Rajasthan into the Aravall hills, from where it came down to the village today.
The officials, however, failed to state why no arrangements had been made to ensure the safety of the villagers in the event of such incidents. Another leopard had strayed into a village in the Ferozepur Jhirka block of the district recently. The villagers had beaten up the leopard and locked in a room after it had attacked them.
Times of India says...
The villagers of Lohinga Kalan in the foothills of Aravallis brutally shot down a full grown leopard on Saturday. With fourth such incident being reported this year in the state, government apathy and villagers' brutality has been exposed. Enquiries revealed that the incident took place on Saturday afternoon around 1 pm when the leopard allegedly attacked three villagers who were working in their mustard fields. According to villagers, Khurshid, Illiyas and their father Hasnu suffered minor injuries while three other escaped unhurt despite the leopard attacking them. As soon as the news reached the village, a crowd surrounded the leopard and attacked him with iron rods and lathis. In meanwhile, one of the villagers allegedly took out his gun and shot the big cat to death. The smallest member of the big cat family is a Schedule One animal, like tiger, according to the Wildlife (Protection) Act of India. According to the act, a leopard should be protected with utmost care. Due to increasing encroachment in Aravalli forests, wildlife in the area has been endangered and often animals venture out in habited areas. While wildlife guidelines suggest that forest department officials should be informed if a wild animal is spotted in habited areas, these guidelines are often flouted by villagers.
This is the third incident where a wild cat has been killed in last four months in Sohna and Mewat region. Notably, earlier such incident took place in the Gurgaon, Kurukshetra and Karnal districts where leopards were killed. In Gurgaon, one female leopard allegedly succumbed to injuries caused by a trab (a barbed wire catcher). Second incident took place in Karnal when a leopard strayed into the city. And third incident took place in Shahbad village of Kurukshetra. Meanwhile, leopard killing has once again raised the eyebrows of wildlife enthusiasts who have sought strict action against the errant officials who failed to act in time. "A leopard is shy by nature and it always looks for a safe place to hide. Had the wildlife officials been active enough, we wouldn't have lost yet another wild cat. All this is being done due to lack of seriousness among wildlife officials and the local administration. We have already moved an application seeking strict action against those who have killed the leopard, " said Naresh Kadyan, a wildlife enthusiast and office bearer of OIPA in India. Speaking to TOI, Kadyan also sought immediate action against the errant forest officials, including the district forests officer, for their alleged insensitive response. According to sources, post mortem of a Schedule I animal must be well documented in the presence of wildlife officers, but Saturday shame story was allegedly hushed up by the administration.
The International Organisation for Animal Protection - OIPA in India and People for Animals (PFA) Haryana approached WCCB and Project Tiger team to intervene in the crime investigation on 18-12-2010 evening and concerned authorities were requested to conduct postmortem by a wildlife expert Doctors team under video recording cover but local Police and Wildlife officials failed to do so, formal postmortem was conducted by a local Veterinary Surgeon, no bullet were found in the body and then quickly body was destroyed adopting un-professional methods in the premises of Punhana Veterinary Hospital, where as VS never conducted leopard postmortem before and all concerned officials integrity became doubtful. All concerned authorities passing bucks each other to hush up the crime against wildlife. As per OIPA in India information illegal arms were used by the villagers to shot dead scheduled one animal and local Police lodged FIR against unidentified persons, where as eyewitnesses disclosed name of the shooters.
Hence OIPA in India - PFA Haryana placed this open notice before all concerned authorities as per provisions and welcome the investigation by WCCB officials instead of local Police, Wildlife officials as well. It is further submitted that Wildlife Department, Haryana don't have zeal to protect their wildlife because it is past practice to handle wild animals in the State to shoot the animals instead of adopting safe techniques, no safe measures were adopted, introduced to keep wild animals in their natural habitat, illegal activities, encroachments are still going on to disturb wildlife.
