Kind attention :
The Chief Wildlife Warden, Haryana / DFO concerned / DC, Mewat.
A five-year-old leopard was attacked and severely beaten early on Friday morning by the villagers of Ahman Bans near Firozpur Jhirka in Mewat district.
The leopard had strayed into the village in search of food, where it was spotted by villa...gers who cornered it worrying that it might attack them or their cattle.
Trying to get away, the leopard attacked the mob, injuring two villagers, Asif and Usmaan.
After that, the villagers attacked the leopard with lathis. After beating it, they locked the badly bruised animal in a room.
Police and forest officials were informed about the incident and reached the spot almost three hours later. But they did not have a tranquilliser gun, and could not sedate the leopard. A gun was brought from Bhiwani only after noon, said a forest official at the site.
When the conservator (wildlife), Gurgaon circle, Satyabhan, was called at 3pm, to ascertain the state of the injured animal, he said: "We are on our way, the animal is only injured and not dead. The leopard has been shifted to the veterinary hospital in Sardana near Sultanpur."
On the other hand, Chotu Ram Jotriwal, chief conservator (wildlife), was clueless about why such man-animal conflicts were taking place repeatedly in the eco-sensitive Aravali Hills. "We are looking into the matter, " said Jotriwal, when he was asked about the incident.
No case had been registered against the mob which beat the endangered animal at the time of going to press. Doctors meanwhile said the leopard was undergoing treatment and that his condition was stable.
Said a senior forest official: "Ever since the Supreme Court imposed a blanket ban on mining in the Aravali Hills, the leopard population has grown. However, the loss of their habitat because of interference from the locals and a lack of food (smaller herbivores) and water in the hills force the leopards to come down into the villages in search of easy prey like dogs and cattle. In order to curb such incidents in the future, it is necessary to enrich their habitat."
