Choice Home Warranty Reviews

Ouch! April 17, 2010
Scammed me, then no comment...
To ChoiceHomeWarranty - Jay Moss - I like many others am in the middle of a dispute with your company. I have emailed you at the address you provided to us in an earlier post and have not heard back from you. I have also put in numerous calls to a supervisor with your company, Sam Patel, with no response.
In my case our warranty was canceled the day after we filed a claim. The reason was for non-payment. The payment was being billed to a credit card that expired and was replaced by our credit card company this month. We received an email from your company stating that our premium was past due. (This was the day that our premium is due) We received the email at 10:30am, at 4:45pm that day we called Choice Home Warranty, updated the credit card information and made payment by phone. The woman that took the payment assured us that the payment should post the following day and the policy would be reinstated. When we called the following day we were advised that the warranty had been canceled due to non-payment and we would need to request reinstatement in writing to be considered for further coverage. In addition our current claim was denied. I explained that the email we received stated:
"To make sure you won’t be without home warranty coverage, please ACT NOW! Keep in mind; when your Choice Home Warranty account is past due, you may be responsible for all repair costs that arise. Please contact our customer service department toll free at 1-888-531-5403 to update your payment information."
I was under the impression that responding within six hours of notice on a business day was pretty good response time. The manager on duty, Troy McDermott, advised me that he did not make the rules and that there was no coverage. I spoke with your manager on duty, Troy McDermott, again the following day explaining that I filed the claim before the warranty was canceled and made payment within hours of being notified. He advised that there is no coverage for policies that are not in force regardless of the date of the claim and insisted that they had not processed the payment. I reviewed my statement and it appears that you have not processed the payment. I can think of only one reason that you wouldn't have excepted my payment.
I have a two yr old girl, a 5yr old boy and a wife with heart conditions that could be adversely affected by the lack of air conditioning in our home. Your technician stated that the unit needed to be replaced. This is why someone like me purchases a home warranty. James, please help us clear this up so that I don't have to go the same route as so many others seem to have gone with Choice Home Warranty. Account # 257059835

Scam
We became service contractors for choice home warrnty in 2009. Since then they have paid only 2-3 bills and most of the bills are not paid, Total amount of $1291.71 has not been paid even after months. Every time they have different story to tell, like checks will be sent on ____ date, checks already sent, checks lost in mail, bill been transfered to HQ. On top of all this there is no contact for any HQ. Nobody return calls, nobody answers E mail. They are the worst one.

Fradulent
I tried to cancel the contract, as the contract indicated that you can cancel at any time. When I called, I received the runaround several times and some fluke manager, Jim Reid, indicated that I can cancel but had to sign a waiver before cancelling so that I would not go to the Better Business bureau. This company initially said they could cover my heating system and they couldn't. They get your money tied into their company and they do not honor what they put in writing. PLEASE DO NOT USE THEM!! The manager is extrememly nasty and tries to make you go against your civil rights as a customer!!

Scam/RipOff
I was unsatisfied with their service and will not recommend their company to anyone else. The one time that I attempted file a claim to address a shower that was leaking because it had lost its seal a contractor that was a total crook came out to my home and attempted to charge me $1500 to fix it. I was told that the foundation had settled and the pipe draining the shower was 1.5 inches below its original depth. They contended that I needed to tear out the bathroom floor and replace the pipe (in a bathroom that I had just had totally remodeled, with the exception of the shower, about one month before). I was to pay for the tunneling fee (about $1, 400) and Choice Home Warranty would pay for the parts (less than $100). By the way, I would also be responsible for having the bathroom floor and shower replaced as well. To make matters worse, the plumber dropped his paperwork on the way out and I was nice enough to help him pick up. To my chagrin, I saw three other price quotes for exactly $1500 as well. I’ll bet that’s not a coincidence. I paid more for the service call fee than I did to have the seal fixed and have someone use a PVC pipe and glue to extend the pipe to its original height. It’s been over a year and the shower hasn’t leaked a bit since. He was a terrible contractor and this is a terrible warranty company. There are so many exclusions in the "total plan", there are only a handful of things that are really covered - and trust me, I mean a handful. I believe some high school drop-out is running this business out of the basement of his parent’s home. This is just one of those things where you don’t find out how depraved and corrupt people can be until you actually need them to help you.

Claim refusal
The plumber assigned had not called after 2 days of the claim being reported. I called but did not get a return call. I thought, hey, they get busy, let me see if Choice Home Wrrty has another plumber they can assign quickly. I took the opport. to refer them to a plumbing co. who had serviced my claim while under a prior Wrrty co. It turned out the plumber was not yet with CHW but had his sign-on papers ready to go and was just waiting for callback from CHW anyway.

The plumber diagnosed the issue, communicated it to CHW. I've had good results with this plumber in the past with & without a wrrty co. so I felt I could rely on his assessmt.

Apparently he did not like the way CHW reacted to his report, and how he detected the customer was gonna get scammed by CHW. The plumber told me I need to request another plumber since he was pulling himself off from CHW, due to long paperwork wait, and CHW did not seem to have service for the customer in mind. He cautioned me to switch wrrty co, what's gonna happen if your water heater leaks, they gonna make you wait while water damage continues in your home?

Denial of Claim
(This is 1 incident of many that I experienced.)
Water heater-plumber recommended to replace it. Wrrty company authoriz. group says it was not installed properly. I pointed out to the authorization group that a CO (certif of occupancy) confirms its acceptance, also that the plumber (whom I called for clarification) never mentioned improper installation to the wrrty co. It's like they're making it up, and I feel like employees are rewarded for not solving customer claims.

Customer service is great at follow-up to check if technicians have called to set up appt. I realized later its because some technicians never call the homeowner. I had 1 electric co and 1 plumbing co refuse to set up an appt the moment they heard the name of this wrrty co. They simply told me they're booked up for several wks. One electr co went as far as saying they wait longer than 30 days sometimes to get paid.

Try their emergency service after hours (good luck on long holiday weekends with a plumbing/heating/electrical issue). An answering service assigns a claim#, no office people or authoriz. group available, no technician calls until the next business day which could be the 3rd/4th day. You wait for the authoriz. group on the next bus. day only to be denied coverage.

I don't expect to renew. I was attracted by the lower annual cost & lower service fee and very much regret switching over from another wrrty co.

We should invite law firms for help in a class action suit. There seems to be many complaints with this company.

Denial of Claim
Refrigerator - denied. It seems to me if the appliance is not (brand) new, they will not replace it. Meaning they will cover only if the unit is new, which is a moot a point, since it should still be under manufacturing wrrty. Their authorization group seems very creative in coming up with excuses why they won't cover the unit.

dishwasher
Re:Claim#49035061
Cannot reach the office by phone today. It would not surprise me if this company has closed its doors. I was told a ck for $204.95 would be mailed out on Mon 22 Feb 2010...I STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED THE CHECK to purchase a dishwasher. $204.95 will actually buy about half a dishwasher but they don't give a damn about that. I have been without a dishwasher since the 7th Dec 2009 while they sent out shoddy repairmen to my house twice and they didn't fix it. I have rec'd nothing but the run around from this company and my outrage with them goes beyond words. Now the phone calls won't even go thru, not that it would do any good to complain..THEY JUST DON'T CARE!

Rip off
Don't buy a policy from Choice Home Warranty. They will run you thorugh document hell and not provide you service if your repair is beyond a simple repair. They were fine until I had a large problem that would cost them over $100, then the asked for records that went years back beyond the contract period...even further than my home ownership. Their goal was to shut me down, make me pay for the repair myself in hopes I would just go away. If you waste your money on one of their Warranties, you are throwing your money away!!!

Water heater
Even though I just received a renewal notice from Choice Home Warranty, I will absolutely not renew. Sometime ago my hot water heater began leaking and showed serious signs of wear (mainly due to age of the water heater). CHW sent a technician to my home and determined that the water heater leak was a result of internal malfunctioning of the internal operating parts. This fact was further solidified when I found out that the internal thermostat was also malfunctioning. JOHN a senior representative of CHW concluded, based on his (JOHN"s opinion) and ignoring the findings of the technician, that the water heater was leaking due to causes "not covered in the TOTAL PLAN COVERAGE which I had purchased (at an extra premium). I was forced to purchase a new water heater without the help or service from CHW. The local technician who was sent by CHW remarked that the water heater should have been covered under warranty without question. I would warn anyone from seeking a contract with this company.
