Toshiba laptop works only with battery
November 12/08, I bought a laptop in Circuit City Stores Inc. Store 413 (3761 State Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93105). I bought the laptop in an emergency (my old computer went down) and I depend on a computer to work (on line tutoring and translations services).
The laptop is a Toshiba TOS L305S5907, which costs $ 659.96, without any further discount even though the laptop was a displayed one, and had small scratches, but I bought it, because it was the only one I could afford.
But, the seller, Mr. R. Biggs, who was not very helpful but almost absent, did not tell me that the computer was damaged, on the contrary he assured me that it is was ok, that it was just been displayed in the store.
When I went home the laptop was connected to the wall, but worked fine only until the battery got empty and the laptop shut down. I could not turn it on again. Next day (the battery was been charged half during the night), I turned it on, and again the computer shut down when the battery got empty even though it was connected to the wall.
It seems that the laptop works only with the battery. Though, I can see the computer receives power from the external power source since the AC power light is on (the battery light too), but not the on/off light. The worst is that while the laptop is working the battery does not get charged but gets empty, even though is connected to the wall.
I was in Circuit City store, and I was astonished about the indifference of the sellers when I told what happened with my laptop. One of them told me that it wasnt anything to do. That I could go to Ventura and ask for get another one or use the Toshibas guaranty, but he could do anything for me. When I went home, I cold to the store and told again to another seller what happened and he answered the same: nothing to do, because they were closing and did not have technical service anymore, and I could just use the computer with battery.
It means that I would maybe be able to work with the computer 3 hours a day until the battery -which charges half during the night- gets empty???
This distressful situation has cost me money and time, and nobody takes the responsibility of an unfair treatment from part of Circuit City. That Circuit City is going bankrupted does not mean that they can cheat and treat people like they have treated me and sell them any junk they have for recover what they lost.

Price Gouging
Foolishly, I decided to buy a camera without comparing prices online first. I bought a good digital point-and-shoot, well rated, for around $345. With the memory and case, the total came out to $375.
Later that night I found that the *average* price for that same camera is $224, and that the best deals were at B & H and at newegg.com -- $230 includes the camera case and memory.
The prices simply do not vary that much at other stores. Circuit City jacked up the price by about 50%.
Customer service was poor, but not as bad as the stories I've heard about the store on 80th and Broadway, where unfortunately I must go to return this item.
Profit, friends, by my example. Check 0nline reviews first... it only takes a few minutes.
50% markup!!!

CityAssure insurance
Circuit City offers all customers an after warenty insurance plan. They sell it as "Total piece of mind" "Hassle free fix it or replace it" What they do not tell you is, in the fine print under the terms and conditions, (which you can only read after you buy it) it allows them at their discretion to replace your product with a "Rebuilt or refurbished" unit or, repair your product with used parts. They know that if you saw the truth of what you are buying, you will never buy it. Then, they give themselves the ability to take a "Reasonable" amount of time to decide what to do with your product. The term Reasonable is ambiguous and could mean weeks or even months. Basically you are totally being screwed and fleeced out of your money. I would recommend that you not only not buy the insurance, but do not buy anything from people who would screw you like this! I, unfortunately did not know this and got totally suckered.

Extended Warranty
I purchased a top of the line Sony 60" DLP TV. The salesman taold us if we bought the extended warranty that along with any repairs, it also included the first replacement lamp which retails for $250. So I bought the warranty. We received absolutely no paperwork or information on the warranty. When i called a few weeks later to question this, I was told it was in the computer. So I had no idea when the warranty ran out or the terms. Well the lamp in my TV burned out, so I called for the replacement lamp. I was told the warranty ran out 10 days ago and they would do nothing. Not even allow me to purchase a new lamp. I feel i was totally ripped off. I wrote Corporate and they passed it right back to the same people i delt with in the first place. I was told they use the warranty as a sales tool and would do nothing for me. I asked if this lamp that I essentially already paid for, worth loosing a long time customer for life? They said yes! Shows how much they really care about my business or anyone's. Never buy their extentded warranties. They are a total rip off. frankly, if all they care about is the almighty dollar and not the satisfaction of their customers, then the heck with them. I can get the same price and bad service anywhere. Why would anyone still continue to shop with them? The only reason was their customer service. Since that is non existant at this point then I will purchase my electronics from the ten thousand companies that offer the same price.

Bad service
I purchased a big screen tv from this store and was sold a warranty to go with it..The tv needs repair and is still under the warranty they sold me when I purchased the tv..It has been over a week now of calling phone numbers only to be told to call another..Store customer service is no help at all..He refers me to corporate and corporate refers me to the store..They will not give me a time frame as to when the tv will be repaired or replaced..Evidently this phone tag is how they get out of actually having to warranty the product they sold me..I have called all the numbers they have given me to resolve this issue..The last call I made was to the store and was told they could not give me any date as to when this issue would be resolved..I live in a rural area and they can find no one to come here to repair and will not replace it with out more time..How much more time no one will say..My advice to others is do not waste your money on Circuit City Advantage Protection Plans..What a rip-off!! Better yet DO NOT SHOP AT Circuit City..I've also heard they may be going bankrupt..Imagine that!!

Firedog Installer
I worked at Circuit City for almost one year before leaving and going to Best Buy. Roughly a month before I left, they hired a new car audio install supervisor, Rick F. Circuit City Store #3508. Unfortunatly for the customers and co-workers, he had ZERO experience performing installs. When I and two other installers confronted our store director about this and other problems he was causing (over booking, going past alloted time, lying to customers) the store director said that he had to hire someone. Eventhough there was a MECP installer who went to Stereo School in OKC who wanted the job. I and the two other installers were told by the supervisor to sell a Metra Smart Cable, but not to use it on the install. Also, he told a customer that we could bypass the video lockout on any in-dash DVD monitor, which is against federal law. After I left, I learned of another incident caused by him, I got the information from the Operations Manager. Rick, while trying to back out a car, tore up the side of it because he accidentlly hit the gas instead of the brake. Worst part is he does not have a drivers license. The store director, Donald J., apparently did not know of this and did not notify the district offices. I assume this because they let him back in the install bay after a few weeks. I'm not sure why anyone in their right mind would not fire this person...

Horrible service
I could not pay my bills online, because they decided to change their website for online billing. I pay this bill on line all the time but never received anything to tell myself or anyone else I know about the change. I moved from Arizona to Michigan and I have not received a bill in 4 months. I received a phone call stating I had to pay over $100 dollars which I did that day after I found a 4 month old statement, and if I didn’t after Nov 10 I would receive a past due amount. 2 days later I looked at my credit report and they put a 2 month past due amount which they said would not be put on unless I paid before Nov 10th. I called back the automated number that called me about the late fee, and the genius behind the phone could not figure it out, but I still had the charge on my credit report. Circuit city is going the drain anyways. I look forward to seeing your empty buildings in the city. What a horrible company. I would never ever!!! Buy anything from there again.

Unauthorized billing
My computer wasn't working- from what little I knew- I thought the hard drive crashed from a virus. Took to firedog for a diagnostic test- $60. Told I need a new hard drive-$275+. another $130 charge I'm not sure of- they told me to order from Acer a recovery disc-$30.
When I went to pick it up- then they told me- whoops- CD drive not working- another$70. I told them to take out the hard drive and give me my computer back- they said OK- BUT an additional $60 for their time and labor. So I've paid out $150 pretty much for nothing (didn't take the new hard drive, etc.
Took the computer to another independent repair shop- $45 diagnostic test, and needed ONLY a simple part they sold me for $15. (I never needed a new hard drive, or the recovery discs.) Firedog techs are very incompetent- at least the ones at the Lancaster, PA store. I will never go there again- and will warn all my friends also.

Awful experience
Back in October of 2006, I bought a TV at Circuit City. The salesperson promised me 36 months with no interest or finance charges, and also encouraged me to buy a stand and a video system on the same receipt because they all would receive the same benefits. After 3 months, a finance charge appeared on my bill. I checked back at the receipt, and the incompetent salesman did not include my deal on the sales receipt. I went back to the store and luckily the same manager was working there (I noticed Circuit City has a high turnover). He filled out a Re-Key Request form and faxed it over to Chase and the charges went away after a couple of months.
At the 9th month, new charges showed up, and I went through the same process. The store manager filled out a 2nd Re-Key Request form and faxed it to Chase and they credited my account. Cut to 15 months later, new charges appear on the bill. I have been calling and arguing and faxing since January, but they will not honor the agreement the store manager promised me.
They have imposed a random payment schedule of 18 months and will not change it though I have the documentation. Chase tells me it has to be approved by Circuit City and Circuit City says they can’t change anything in the account and tells me to talk to Chase. I have spent countless hours on the phone and always have to plead my case from the beginning to a different representative. They have given me several different fax numbers and I’ve talked to the Escalation department and various supervisors, but no one will actually make the effort to fix it. When someone does give me their name and extension, my call goes directly to voice mail where it never gets returned.
I managed to pay off everything on the account early and all that’s left is $129.49 of their finance charges. Everyone I know is just telling me to pay it off, so I can be done with it, but why should I? They made me a promise and put it in writing twice, shouldn’t they have to honor it? I only bought the stuff because of the idea of minimum payments for 3 years. Needless to say, I will never purchase anything at Circuit City again, and it seems their poor business ethics have caught up with them because the company is flailing. I also closed my account with Washington Mutual when Chase bought them out because I don’t want anything to do with them. I don’t want to ruin my credit by ignoring the bills, but they don’t deserve my money.

Bad service
Circuit city tried to blame me for a defective LCD screen. I did not damage it in anyway but they tried to tell me I did. I will be pursuing legal action because I am not paying for a mistake that I did not commit. I also paid for an "Extended Warranty" which is an absolute joke.
