CitiBank Reviews

fluster December 3, 2010
horrible
i got a personal loan to consolidate debt through citifinancial. because i had poor credit, and no other options, i accepted their loan with a 26% apr, making my loan for $9, 000 come out to $16, 000!! i did get 2 insurance policies put on there too, one for home and auto protection (for $500) and one that would pick up my payments if i lost my job. my payments came out to $262/month, more than my car loan!

i was good with my payments until my husband lost his job in march 2010. i'm sorry, but if it comes to having my electric bill paid or paying citi for my loan, i will always choose my utilities. i fell 2 months behind on my loan payments.

i spoke with a lady at the branch in west york, pa, and she offered me a payment diffurment, which would allow me to pay the interest on my payment, making me pay only $132 for two months. anybody with out a job knows that that little bit helps. well, before i heard back from the lady, i got served papers by the constable. citifinancial took me to court to get a judgement of $8000 against me!

this was in the beginning of august 2010. i have not paid them a cent, because they have made no effort to contact me. i did get a letter in the mail stating that the citi office i had dealt with had been closed and my account was now held by an office in texas. i lost my job in august this year, so even if they try to garnish my wages due to the judgement they obtained against me, they won't get anything. i have NO income because i was fired.

the sad part is that they probably already wrote my account off but they are still determined to make me suffer. they never got back to me about my payments and just sued me.

unauthorized deduction
Citibank is the worst credit card company period. They deducted a payment from my checking almost a month early, and now after repeated phonecalls still have not returned my money. This deduction has also caused overdrafts in my checking account which also have not been returned. The managers and staff have given me the continual runaround each time I contact them.

Poor responses, find means and ways to overcharge
One of the worst experiences, if not the worst, for credit card!
Consumer beware:
1) Charge high annual fees $140 and rigid to waive late charges $50 (can only waive once in 12 months)
2) Difficult to cancel card
1st time - called 24-hour service hotline, officer said cannot, will ask relevant dept to call back but no call-back
2nd time - called to cancel, officer said ok but must settle all outstanding fees including late charges / annual fee etc. Fees settled and card cut. But after some time, still received bill and later charges, realised card not cancelled.
3rd time - called to query. Officer said last time tried to call to confirm cancellation and option form for cancellation sent but no response. Told him over the phone already confirm to cancel, officer did not mention there are follow-up form to be done. officer then said will cancel but again must settle the fees.
4) Agent hard sell for SMRT linked citibank credit card at AMK hub. Card is never used for a few months, but when called to cancel, officer said have cancellation charges of $150! if want to cancel, must wait for 1 year but the agent did not mention about this. If wait for another year, not sure by then what other excuses they have to charge the card-holders???

Bad service
I received my replacement credit card from Citibank which required activation from my home phone. After calling the number listed and confirming my card number, I was directed to an individual who tried to sell me some type of credit card monitoring service. Not wanting to be impolite, I listened until he finished and then was asked if I wanted the service. I answered no and asked the individual to confirm that my credit card was activated. He acknowledged that it was but continued to try to keep me on the phone. At that point I had to say "You can hang up now. Thank you." Then I hung up. It's not a life or death issue but it certainly was annoying! I'm inclined to cancel my account if that's what Citibank needs to resort to to make money.

Late Fee Rip Off
I have been a user of Citibank cards for years. The majority of my student loans are also through Citibank. I recently obtained a Citibank American Airlines American Express.

I pay each of my monthly bills at the beginning of each month, as I am paid monthly. I had the card for only a few months, but I had decided to use it for slightly larger items, such as plane tickets, that I intended to pay off over a 2-3 month period. During the month of April, I made a payment. Then, at the beginning of May, once I received my paycheck, I made a payment, which was intended for the May bill, as the April bill was due by April 30. In the beginning of June, I received a phone call warning me that I had yet to make my May payment. I thought that was strange, but made a payment over the phone just in case. I went home and found out that the "closing date" for my April bill was actually May 5, the day I made my May payment, even though the April due date was April 30. I also saw that I had a $39 late fee. I thought to myself, "No big deal, I'll call and I'm sure they will see the error and credit me the late fee." Boy, was I mistaken. I spoke to several people, and they all seemed very sympathetic, they informed me that this would have to go to their supervisors, but they were confident that I would be refunded. I then received several letters and emails denying my request. The letters simply stated that I did not make a payment by June 1st. "No, " I called back and explained, "but I had made a payment less than 30 days earlier on May 5th." Not one of the responses I received even acknowledged the fact that I had indeed made a payment in the month of May.

I will never be using my Citibank American Express again and I only wish I could pay off my student loans in one swift motion so that Citibank would never receive any money from me ever again. And all of this for one $39 late fee.

They are robbers
I had a credit card that i used for my business for 6 years and paid all my bill on time. all of a sudden they decide to close my acct because my credit rating didn't meet their standards. i had 68, 000 i wanted to redeem and was told my customer service that i had till the end of the month.

well, i just found out that they wiped out all my miles along with the closed account. even though i had another citicard that wasnt closed, they would let me transfer it!

I plan to cancel the rest of my accounts with them.
