Hidden charges
Unortunately, I made a very bad experience with Coastal Comfort in Ventura, CA. After the regular service of our heating & AC system, we were advised to replace our Germicidal UV bulb. The charges for the bulb: $213 and after "discount" $170 (if you buy a service contract). I thought that this is quite expensive and the fact that the service technician reluctantly let me keep the old bulb made me suspicious, but I paid the total amount including a sevice contract for another year (thank God I declined many other offers; the company tries to sell you additional products and services that you actually do not need in my opinion). After a day I simply checked the internet and called the UV bulb's producer and found that THE SAME bulb can be ordered online for &66 which 30% of the costs. I confronted coastal comfort with this fact, but the company did not care and provided as explanation "our company has to work profitable". My individual opinion is YES, companies have to work profitable, but should not hide their costs in products such as an UV bulb in order to lure costumers into a seemingly inexpensive service contract. My recommendation: If you really like to go with this company, make sure you check the prices on their products. I - personally - felt cheated and that there is no misunderstanding: Charging a higher rate for a bulb for the convenience etc. is okay, I would have been okay with double the price. But charging 3 times more and selling this as a "discount" qualifies, in my opinion, as an improper business practice.
