The elected politicians allow these abuses of our system to happen and they look the other way.
I have worked at several government agencies while temping. Here are just a few things I witnessed. While working at the Dept. of Transportation I answered the phone when people called to say their windshield had been cracked by a rock thrown by a government vehicle. My instructions were to tell them nothing could be done. During my month stint, I answered the phone maybe 4 times a day. I read magazines the rest of the time as there was no other work assigned. When my assignment was done, they offered me a job. I asked "what job" - there was no work to do. They said if they didn't fill the "job" the money would be taken from the budget.
I worked at the Dept. of Housing. Several events happened that dumbfounded me. There was an open house for about 50 people to celebrate the re-opening of a building that had been renovated. They offered refreshments purchased from King Soopers. Several weeks after the open house, someone called from King Soopers to apologize for charging the department $500 for cheese. No one in the DOH had noticed!
After that incident, I heard about seats on a city bus that had been slashed by its passengers. This bus had taken people on welfare up to Central City to gamble with their welfare checks.
After that it was discovered that a school that was being torn down (lot of problems with health issues - lead paint, etc.), the fluorescent light bulbs which should have been thrown away intact according to law, had been broken and put in containers because at the dump they were being charged by the size of what they dumped. Myself and another staff member heard of the situation. The manager of the dept. then THREATENED us if we told anyone this.
Another incident, I went to pick up a package to change my name. I stood in line for about 15 minutes. In an adjoining area, I saw two employees doing nothing. I asked them if one of them could get me a package. They told me, in broken English, that they couldn't because that wasn't their job. Yet, there they sat, one of them filing her nails, with nothing to do. I finally got the package and took it home, only to find out that they had given me a package that was outdated and had been replaced TWO YEARS AGO. When I called them, they said I could just go on line and get the package.
These are just a few of the incidents I personally witnessed. We don't need to cut back on education or programs for seniors or road work or anything useful. We need to cut back on wasting our taxpayers' money for useless, dishonest, wasteful positions - and departments - that are sucking this state and country dry.
